Text of the page (random words):
s flat with a wavy eye watering print over the past few months i haven t posted about every new fabric acquisition because that would just be boring but i bought a few fabrics over the past few weeks and want to mention some of them here because re reading my own posts after a couple of months often brings projects to the top of the queue first up is a different colourway of the peacock print above i was really pleased when sewing my newest dress today to discover that this fabric handles really well and holds a crease somewhat because it is a poly crepe de chine i was worried that it might be horribly slippy and or shreddy and or all the other things that can be horrible about polys but this one isn t at all bad this makes me happy because this colourway of the print also makes me happy i have been good about not buying random fabrics recently and this one was bought with the intention to make this fabulous dressing gown housecoat robe or whatever you call it in your part of the world i was going to say this will be another dossing around the flat garment but i think it s more of a swanning around the penthouse darling garment we do live on the top floor so once i ve made this i think i m going to start referring to our flat as the penthouse whenever i wear it the next one is a teal black tiny check lightweight suiting the plan for this is a long sleeved version of my tnt simplicity 2888 the pattern does have a long sleeved version that i seem to have managed to crop out of the photo the only minor difficulty with this is that i seem to have perfected inserting an invisible zip but this fabric is probably going to need a centred or lapped zip and i hate hate hate putting them in next are two silly fabrics for a definite dossing around project the fabric for the top is a jersey and a cotton fabric for pj pants to go with the top and yes i am aware that they don t really match but they go together in a nope i am not leaving the house today and you can t make me kind of way which is the entire intention of the outfit so there last is a fabric for a dress that no one in the world except anne from pretty grievances seems to have made i don t know if it s the 80s vibe or what but it isn t appearing on pattern review or anywhere else in the blogosphere i loved the pattern as soon as i saw it and before i d seen anne s version which is fabulous but have been waiting for the right fabric i spotted this fabric a few weeks ago but passed it up because i didn t know what i d make with it i was sorting out my patterns a week or so ago and when i came across my copy of simplicity 1939 i knew that the fabric i had seen would be perfect for it it s yet another poly crepe de chine i intend to make the view in the photo on the pattern envelope but without the strange black bits at the hips there is a danger of this running into beer stein or muu shroud territory so i will muslin it first of course making a muslin means that this fabric could end up just increasing my stash i suppose as i ve mentioned my stash more than once in this post i should post a proper update at the beginning of the year i had 250 25m i have sewn 65 15m feels like i ve sewn more but that s what my notebook tells me and my current stash stands at 365 90m which means i appear to have bought about 180m this year my notebook tells me i have bought around 170m this year but i m not going to worry about a 10m discrepancy when i have too much fabric this week i am going to attempt to sew all the projects mentioned in my previous post so that i can start cutting those mentioned in this post the dress i made today was probably the most complicated of all those projects and it wasn t really remotely complicated so i have a fighting chance wish me luck hands up anyone who thought of a dwarf when they read that word if you did you know what i m talking about if you didn t never mind of two floors posted in finished projects patterns sewing sewing plans tagged burda cotton crepe de chine dress fabric jersey pjs simplicity skirt stash 12 comments projects in the queue posted on august 29 2012 by readythreadsew i ve been meaning to write this for a few days in the hopes that telling other people what i am planning to sew might mean i actually get around to sewing i was going to go to bed about an hour ago but the street just up from my flat is currently being dug up i am going to guess that it s a water leak because about a year ago the digging was right outside my flat because i was the one who reported the water leak that meant the street got dug up at about this time of night anyway i currently have a load of projects cut out but have lost the mojo to actually sew them they are all either tnts something i have sewn at least once before so i don t know why i m not just getting on with it or simple alterations so post about them and hope the posting fairy works for me it has in the past first up another burda 02 2010 104 cut from an old simplicity 4137 in a black and white cotton print two different belts for my black cherry print dress a simple black stretch petticoat or half slip for those the other side of the pond a simple alteration to a charity shop purchase about a size too large which means removing a side zip i hate unpicking another skirt about three sizes too large but with a centre back zip which means just taking in the side seams cost me 99p in a charity shop and i know i will wear it to death if i can just get around to altering it pj pants more pjs a dress i ve mentioned before a dress and a top from this jersey fabric the jersey is too thin so will have to be lined for this dress the lining is already cut out i ve made the dress once before and wore it a lot last winter so i m looking forward to having another version and because i got a generous cut i was able to squeeze a top out of the remnant just typing this post has made me realise how much i want to wear the clothes that are waiting to be sewn the slapdash sewist always makes herself a birthday dress and her birthday is the same as mine so i should probably try to sew one of the above dresses in time for my birthday although nothing i sew could ever be as fabulous as this posted in sewing sewing plans tagged dress fabric jersey pjs simplicity skirt tops 5 comments some random bits and pieces posted on august 17 2012 by readythreadsew well the comments on my last post surprised me i thought i was a bit odd for not liking the feel of bias cut clothing but it appears i am definitely not alone i ve started sorting out my wardrobe and have already found three garments that i never wear all bias cut two of them tops i have put on to wear on more than one occasion and then always change my mind and wear something else now i know why i found a solution for the navy bias cut top i posted about last time give it to someone who really likes it my mum ignore the fact that the trousers don t really match they are what she was wearing when she came over to see me today it looks so much better on my mum than it did on me i think because she s taller and bias cut doesn t feel twisty to her at all i may give this pattern burda 05 2012 110 one more try in a woven i have a very drapey viscose that i bought with the intention of making this top so i think i ll try it anyway but this time cut on the straight grain it s so simple to sew just two pattern pieces no facings bindings or any other fiddly bits so i d like it to be a tnt i might try and work out how to make the cowl neck a little wider and bit more drapey as i typed that an idea popped into my head i wonder if i could use the cowl neck from my image mi1152 and the main body pieces from this pattern maybe that ll be a challenge for this evening talking of challenges my burda challenge has gone completely out of the window i just got too far behind and there are other projects calling my name way more than the burda projects that s not to say that i won t be sewing from the magazines i haven t yet sewn from in fact i think i ll still use the original premise of the challenge when i can t decide what to sew next also i ve already bought fabrics for quite a few of the challenge projects and i m looking forward to eventually having some of the garments in my wardrobe now some random stuff with photos after posting about my muu shroud credit for that brilliant description goes to anne from pretty grievances i thought i d show how lucky i got with my first few patterns the very first thing i sewed around six years or so ago was this skirt it s too big for me now and the zip looks horrendous but i was so pleased with it at the time it was made from self drafted pattern that i created using instructions from the book yeah i made it myself by eithne farry i used a second hand quilt cover second hand quilt covers are going to appear quite a bit in the rest of this post that cost me 2 00 and a zip that cost about 50p i only used one side of the cover so this first ever garment cost me the grand total of 1 50 and i did actually wear it quite a few times i then sewed a couple of other simple skirts mainly using simplicity 4137 and i wore these to death most of those that have survived i ended up sewing something like a dozen of these have now been turned into a simple burda a line skirt so they got a second lease of life my absolute favourite early garment was a dress i made using simplicity 4265 click on any photo for a larger version i used a second hand quilt cover for this that only cost me a few quid looking back i can see where i made loads of mistakes based on my measurements at the time i cut a size 20 but this made it too big around the neckline and under the arms i also widened the straps so that i could wear a bra and never did get the right strap to sit straight on my shoulder you can see in the photos that it is trying to fall off dolly s shoulder i also got an annoying pattern twin on the front however even with all those problems i did wear this dress quite a bit and it gave me a huge amount of confidence for making future garments the main reason for posting about these is to show that a new sewist can get lucky with the right pattern and doesn t have to end up with a muu shroud the next dress is a bit random it s something i made pre blog and really like it s a little bit frumpy and the fabric isn t the greatest but every time it appears back in my wardrobe after being washed and ironed it almost immediately gets worn again if the weather permits i class this more as a house dress than a going out dress but it s so comfy that i can t resist wearing it it s made using simplicity 2615 the fabric is a very drapey viscose so it creases horrendously and is horrible to iron but i don t do the ironing the main reason i m posting about this is that i think this is the pattern i am now going to use for my lovely orange peacock feather print crepe de chine that i originally intended for the muu shroud dress it s not a very glamorous dress but i know i ll wear it which is far more important lastly i took some photos today of my previous versions of simplicity 2888 mainly because it is difficult to see the lines of the dress in the black cherry print version i don t know why i bought this pattern in the first place because it doesn t look very inspiring on the pattern envelope but i m very happy that i did this is the first version i made using guess what a second hand quilt cover i think it s a bit bridesmaid y and it s a smidge too small around the midriff so i rarely wear it but it s cute enough that i can t bring myself to get rid of it it s fully lined using the lining from second hand curtains the second version i used another second hand quilt cover and more of the ex curtain lining fabric this one came out a smidge too big basically it was a second muslin but i do wear this version i m wearing it right now as i type the third and best fitting version up until the cherry print was this next one and i bought new fabric for it i lined just the bodice because the cotton fabric was dark enough to not need the skirt lined and i found that fully lining the skirt on the first two versions made the dress a little heavy this one gets worn a lot and the cotton fabric is getting softer with each washing which is making it nicer and nicer to wear each time i have bought a load of new patterns and fabric recently but i won t post about them instead i will attempt to go and actually sew something instead of just writing about sewing i think three posts in three days is enough for now posted in burda challenge finished projects sewing sewing plans tagged burda cotton crepe de chine dress fabric lining muslin simplicity skirt tops 6 comments another faux dress that doesn t really work for me posted on august 16 2012 by readythreadsew i posted a little while ago about a top and skirt that i thought made a good faux dress so i tried to duplicate it i had bought 1 5m of fabric to make a top and realised after cutting out the top i could squeeze a skirt from the remainder of the fabric as happened with the first version i ve had these cut out for a while but didn t get around to sewing them until sunday the top is burda 05 2012 110 made before here the skirt is simplicity 2645 it s a simple six panel skirt fully lined with a side zip and no waistband if you look closely you can see where i had to turn the two side back panels upside down on the fabric to fit it onto my remnant but i don t think it looks too strange the burda pattern for the top was designed for a jersey but i thought i d see how it would work in a woven a poly crepe de chine cut on the bias i now understand that i simply don t like the way bias cut clothing feels on my body if i look back at garments that i ve made and then given away to charity shops i can see that a surprising amount of them were bias cut this problem with bias cut garments only really occurred to me when i read this post on lladybird s blog where she says that bias cut garments feel weird that s when the lightbulb went on and i realised that i feel exactly the same way bias cut garments just feel weird it s like they are twisting when i wear them so this skirt and top were supposed to create a faux dress i like the idea of it and think it looks pretty good on dolly although a bit too blousey in the side view but it feels weird when i wear it the skirt will definitely go into the wardrobe but i m not sure about the top as i don t think i m likely to wear
