conversations about contact introduction introduction welcome to the relation al matters archive this is an online collection of a series of conversations around questions of relationality as planetary condition this archive was initiated during the covid 19 pandemic in 2022 where most meetings took place online and so these conversations became a place to meet from season 3 onwards we no longer work with a live feature but all conversations are uploaded to the archive shortly after they have taken place and they can be accessed via this website the project what if not relationality characterizes today s planetary condition one only needs to think of the globally interconnected covid 19 pandemic the deepening socio political and ecological catastrophes that keep intensifying is it not obvious how entangled and implicated that is how relational existence is and is it then not astonishing how different systems be they scientific medical cultural or ethical which seek to respond to these entangled situations continue to work from the assumption that what appears and acts somewhere in a geopolitical region a body psyche or a specific life form is best understood as an in divi dual ized entity whose effects remain in just one place what approaches and modes of response follow if instead we start with entanglement and then explore reverberations and uneven consequences disseminating everywhere in always in determinate ways the relation al matters archive aims to collect insights and divergent practices to deal with the complexity of planetary entanglement the archive is part of a project in which two claims are interwoven in the attempt to gauge the present a relational matters expresses an insistence on the entangled condition of current times and b relation matters presents an ethico political wager for becoming more literate and carefully attuned to what entanglement as condition implies what such a claim asks from those enlivening it via conversational encounters with scholars and cultural practitioners this archive wants to provide its viewers with insights tools and provocations to respond to the world s we coinhabit we depart from a relational perspective yet we welcome or actively ask for critiques of the responses devised from such a point of view in other words we do not propose relationality as solution the conversations instead aim to inquire what relationality means in specific contexts and at different scales to consider what a relational approach could offer for our reckoning with what is happening
