extremetech has an interesting article on why windows vista wont suck they bring up several good reasons but its not a totally redesigned kernel its the windows server 2003 sp1 kernel which is much offering linux preloaded to individual customers on some models the funny thing is the windows xp desktops are still cheaper they only support red hat enterprise ws if you switch distributions your under the gpl nope just the packages are i prefer to stick with the solaris express edition s but hey worth looking into if you favor the gnu packages more opensolaris as many know is suns open source edition of solaris sidebar options for copernic desktop search february 24 2006 posted by rjdohnert in software reviews 3 comments the one thing google has that copernic does not is a sidebar despite my love for screen real estate i have a huge monitor so i went ahead and found a pretty decent desktop sidebar it has plugins has a news reader that can have multiple feeds added to it and a slew of other features i also found a plugin for copernic desktop search its called simply the desktop sidebar if you like sidebars or you use copernic and want something to rival the google sidebar well here you go desktop sidebar copernic plugin for windows desktop search users it supports wds natively just right click on the search button go down to panel properties and for default engine choos windows desktop search windows vista 5308 february 23 2006 posted by rjdohnert in software reviews add a comment activewin has their screenshots up 5308 is up for msdn subscribers downloading now and there have been a few reviews of it what do i like about it so far dont know havent used it yet but i have heard enhanced hardware support better stability although i personally havent had any problems with 5270 and that it just looks better we have been hearing some bitching about the ui i personally like it and its far more customizable than windows xp this build is pretty much feature complete so now they will start putting on the polish for the testers if you have problems or dislikes send em in dont just ignore the problems or dislikes feedback is key before vista goes rtm microsoft has more anti trust problems february 23 2006 posted by rjdohnert in software reviews add a comment tangent an oem has stated that microsoft is once again violating anti trust this time the culprit of microsofts violations are the inclusion of windows media player again active directory windows media server and the net framework my opinion im going to take microsofts side if this is the case its anti competitive for apple to bundle itunes quicktime and iphoto in fact adobe stated it didnt create photoshop album for mac os because of iphoto its also anti competitive for apple to bundle ldap with mac os x server and quicktime streaming server its also anti competitive for apple to bundle clamav with their server os all these things they are complaining about active directory and especially the net framework are crucial for running windows if tangent went with a distribution of linux they would have a bundled openldap helix player and helix server and mono and or qtall bundled in wouldnt that be anti competitive as well the reason these products are bundled is so they can work well with the os also microsoft has had partnerships with tarantella now part of sun and several interoperability initiatives to make competing operating systems work well with active directory novell nds and openldap are available for windows and run well with the system ibm vs sco takes an interesting twist includes microsoft february 22 2006 posted by rjdohnert in software reviews add a comment ibm is at it again in their sco case this time they have issued subpoenas to microsoft sun hp and baystar see ibm in my opinion is still playing this in the court of public opinion meaning they are trying to find a demon for their problems instead of getting statements and collecting developers notes and comments from their staff they are still trying to take the popular road and thats to blame microsoft reading the subpoenas available from groklaw half the microsoft subpoena is irrelevant to their case 2 3 of the sun subpoena is irrelevant to their case most of the hp subpoena is irrelevant and baystar is the only subpoena that i see that is at least almost totally relevant the fsf says they wouldnt allow sco to do a fishing experiment with their subpoena well thats exactly what ibm is doing is fishing in my opinion this just shows ibm stalling for time btw has anyone else besides me noticed that in ibm s new print ads they have taken out the phrase ibm recommends microsoft windows xp professional for buisness microsoft s upcoming vista to support legacy vb6 apps february 22 2006 posted by rjdohnert in software reviews 1 comment so far good new s for companies and other customers who run legacy apps microsoft does plan to support the vb6 runtime in windows vista this is extremely good news i know many people who still run legacy vb6 apps and this also extends the time they need to get those apps ported to net older posts search admin controls log in
