shirt day let s all reflect on how we can be part of truth and reconciliation posted on september 30 2025 by jane fritz disclaimer this post is a repeat of last year s orange shirt day post with minor alterations today september 30 is national truth and reconciliation day in canada also known as orange shirt day since 2021 it has been a declared federal holiday and similarly so for an increasing number of provincial governments the overriding reason for making orange shirt day a day away from work and school is so that people young and old alike can partake in the many activities planned in towns and cities activities meant to help in the healing and reconciliation process with indigenous peoples in canada i m taking this opportunity to revive one of my previous posts in recognition of orange shirt day hoping that this might raise awareness for any reader who isn t familiar with this traumatic part of canada s history orange shirt day began in 2013 as a day for all canadians to reflect on canada s long and painful history of the residential school system of forcibly removing indigenous children from their homes and taking them to residential schools far from home the intentions were bad enough to take the indian out of the child but the methods used at the schools were light years beyond anything that could possibly be justified by any measure it was cultural genocide at the least and unspeakable abuse and death of countless numbers of children at the worst not to mention their families left behind not knowing what was happening to them and all this cruelty was perpetrated in residential schools that were run by churches on behalf of the canadian government the multi generational trauma that resulted is incalcuable continue reading share this monday a look at relative sizes of our geography when our usual map projection isn t playing tricks on us plus a few extra bits posted on september 22 2025 by jane fritz it s been a long time since i ve gone through my map collection too much other stuff going on in reviving map monday i m mostly going to concentrate on the value neutral subject of true geographical size which can be remarkably different from the usual mercator projection we re used to where the further you get from the equator the larger the land mass appears spending our lives looking at flat mercator maps on walls and in books really does warp our sense of distance and size think of looking at the true sizes by cutting the surface of a globe up into the individual countries and bodies of water those are the true sizes
