rob hain home skip to main content home biography art celebration of shared spaces intimate communities contact rob hain artist our world is filled with beauty wonders and distractions and i love it inspiration comes from various sources a beautiful view a special moment a piece of music or a painting art has always been there for me from the start i watched my grandfather paint a watercolour when i was young magically making something appear out of nowhere my cousin keith was a superb draughtsman and i vividly recall an illustrated letter he sent to me after a visit to our home in southampton these early experiences made me want to create my own magic painting is a strange way to earn a living as my friend the artist john berry once commented my days at loughborough college of art were what i would call in the words of the wonderful ian dury being an inmate in a long term institution art is the very epitome of choice i realised i could given time paint anything i wanted so settled on something akin to laurence stephen lowry as his work touched my heart it s my own take though i decided that the palette needed a bit of an injection of colour so when another good friend the brilliant iain macaulay remarked that it looked like lowry on acid i felt i was on the right track edinburgh glasgow newcastle perth oxford and london have all been visited in order to build a canvas which often entails sitting sometimes in the rain on an open top bus snapping images of bustling chaos below me i am always accompanied by my wife the painter margaret scott maggie an alumna of the slade maggie s uncompromising perception and rigorous approach has been instrumental in the final resolution of all my work visiting towns and rural communities is key to establishing a visual vocabulary to draw on when i m in studio i love the work of rose wylie a favourite of my painter son alex hain who frequently introduces me to the work of artists i ve not been aware of i love it when a painting comes together and the buyer falls in love with it the feeling is like delivering the best performance story or piece of music i m blown away by the work of peter howson who never compromises lennox dunbar is another favourite edinburgh arts are print specialists and long standing publishers of rob s art with a large catalogue of prints available view art prints facebook email protected sitemap
