ely pearson this lent i have attempted to stay away from news social media and engaging in public lamentation about the state of affairs in the united states i haven t always been successful it continues to be a desert time for me as i ask how long o lord as civil rights human rights all sorts of rights seem to be bargaining chips for a price the phrase stones cry out has also come to mind at this time found in luke 19 40 jesus says i tell you if these keep quiet the stones will cry out jesus s identity and purpose would be so undeniable that even the natural world would acknowledge it even if people refused to today it is a symbolic expression not a literal one referring to a situation where even inanimate objects would speak out in protest or praise if humans remained silent many of us have not been silent we are crying out with the stones but a new pattern is emerging quid pro quo except it s a one sided deal that only helps those who have no empathy for others a friend shared a sign their church put up this past month i have engaged in a lot of education for ministry things efm to me is a place of safety where a small group of individuals can share their deepest questions and yearnings we learn from each other as we listen with ears of the heart my own efm group has read bishop steven charleston s the four vision quests of jesus i gave two workshops for the episcopal church in connecticut one onsite one on zoom about efm and am doing contract work with efm staff in constructing asynchronous training modules for mentors i highly recommend you check out all that is new regarding efm if you are not familiar with this formation program for adults also check out bishop charleston s book it would make an excellent holy week devotional reading it public policy network eppn faith go another way god human rights immigration jesus lbgtq prayer protest sharon ely pearson so often during times of tragedy such as in the aftermath of gun violence or natural disaster people respond with the comment my thoughts and prayers are with you thoughts and prayers are important but so is action yet we often feel helpless in such times and do not know what kind of action we can take that makes a difference i would contend that prayer and small steps of action can lead to change especially when we are not alone in making them these days it s important to continue our prayers for our nation and leaders to give them strength to face injustice and speak truth to power while our one voice may seem to be like a whisper together our voices carry beyond ourselves here are three simple examples today march 15 is known as the ides of march associated with misfortune and doom it became renowned as the date on which roman dictator julius caesar was assassinated in 44 bce and was further immortalized in the tragedy julius caesar by english dramatist william shakespeare when a soothsayer warns caesar about the danger he faces on march 15th so i followed an idea that has been floating all around social media about sending a message on this day to one who would actively pursue being caesar today another is to join our voices with phone calls to our elected officials at this point it would seem that we need to include our state as well as local leaders too don t forget 5 calls to make your voice heard also if you know of a rally or demonstration near you show up if you can indivisible is a site that lists places where such events are occurring for example by checking the site i have learned that there will be a stand up for every first sunday of lent jesus is sent into the wilderness following his baptism where he is tempted by the devil i feel like i ve been in the wilderness since election day in november being cast out into a harsh land void of compassion with every day seeming to suck out more decency and love the devil is among us withholding bread from the needy and grasping power from the pinnacles of democracy and despite the protests and boycotts letters and phone calls the wilderness seems to go on and on as we are in women s history month now i am reminded of the memes about justice ruth bader baptismal covenant christianity discipleship episcopal church faith go another way jesus prayer racial justice racial reconciliation social justice sharon ely pearson this afternoon sunday i participated in the episcopal church in connecticut s ecct annual celebration of the feast of the blessed absalom jones st paul s on the green episcopal in norwalk ct was the host church and the congregation was from all over the state the music was wonderful and reminded me why i love these types of celebrations so much everyone sang enthusiastically and the church was filled with heartfelt song it s so uplifting but it was the sermon and the prayers that made me take notice i ll share more but for now here are the questions of the baptismal covenant following the apostles creed that i want to remember and use in the future i m not sure where they came from but thank you reverend daniel simon and reverend judith alexis for including them the response to each question i will with god s help will you persevere in prayer and fellowship seeking strength in our common life will you proclaim the good news of the risen christ god s word of hope and reconciliation in word and deed to those to whom christ will send you will you care for god s creation with wisdom and reverence sharing freely of the gifts god has given will you serve christ in all persons in those with whom you agree or disagree loving your neighbor as yourself will you strive to build god s reign the beloved community of justice and righteousness working to bring peace to the human family will you be the voice of those who have no voice the spirit of those whose spirit is broken and the messenger of hope for those sitting in despair will you seek to mend what is broken by human sin and greed and look for christ present in those who suffer at the hand of others may the god of justice and peace who in love has called us to follow in the way pour out upon you the blessings of the holy spirit to pray presiding bishop michael curry rule of life the way of love valentine s day sharon ely pearson today is valentine s day a secular day of love knowing that so many of you are reeling and not feeling very uplifted these days i decided to share with a portion of an introduction i wrote in 2018 for t he way of love little book of guidance series on each of the seven practices of the way of love i was privileged to be part of the original team that took bishop curry s concepts of the way of love and fleshed it out for the episcopal church i pray that you being rooted and established in love may have power together with all the lord s holy people to grasp how wide and long and deep is the love of christ and to know this love that surpasses knowledge that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of god ephesians 3 17 19 niv at the 79th general convention of the episcopal church in july 2018 president bishop michael b curry called the church to practice the way of love it was an invitation to all young and old alike to grow more deeply with jesus christ at the center of our lives so we can bear witness to his way of love in and for the world with this call bishop curry named seven practices that can help us grow deeper in our relationship with god jesus and our neighbors as we also learn how to w to live into our baptismal promises more fully in today s world of busy schedules hurried meals and twenty four hour news cycles it is now more imperative that we make and take the time to center ourselves and follow the way of jesus this might mean
