christianity discipleship faith culture mission prose poetry faith james james taylor shed a little light social justice sweet baby james ukraine sharon ely pearson the epistle of james is a general epistle letter and one of the 21 letters in the new testament it was written originally in koine greek and in the first line of the letter the author is identified as james a servant of god and of the lord jesus christ who is writing to the twelve tribes scattered abroad traditionally it is attributed to james the brother of jesus james the just and the audience is considered generally to be jewish christians who were dispersed outside israel james proclaims that faith without works is dead that social justice is to be the signpost of our christianity like the old testament book of amos james is most concerned with issues of poverty and within this context the writer takes a surprisingly communal approach explicitly addressing his message of social justice to both the powerful rich and the vulnerable poor today it represents an appeal to both the corporate kings of wall street and those men and women who make their homes on the street continue reading a word from james james share this covenant christianity discipleship episcopal church faith go another way jesus prayer racial justice racial reconciliation social justice sharon ely pearson this afternoon sunday i participated in the episcopal church in connecticut s ecct annual celebration of the feast of the blessed absalom jones st paul s on the green episcopal in norwalk ct was the host church and the congregation was from all over the state the music was wonderful and reminded me why i love these types of celebrations so much everyone sang enthusiastically and the church was filled with heartfelt song it s so uplifting but it was the sermon and the prayers that made me take notice i ll share more but for now here are the questions of the baptismal covenant following the apostles creed that i want to remember and use in the future i m not sure where they came from but thank you reverend daniel simon and reverend judith alexis for including them the response to each question i will with god s help will you persevere in prayer and fellowship seeking strength in our common life will you proclaim the good news of the risen christ god s word of hope and reconciliation in word and deed to those to whom christ will send you will you care for god s creation with wisdom and reverence sharing freely of the gifts god has given will you serve christ in all persons in those with whom you agree or disagree loving your neighbor as yourself will you strive to build god s reign the beloved community of justice and righteousness working to bring peace to the human family will you be the voice of those who have no voice the spirit of those whose spirit is broken and the messenger of hope for those sitting in despair will you seek to mend what is broken by human sin and greed and look for christ present in those who suffer at the hand of others may the god of justice and peace who in love has called us to follow in the way pour out upon you the blessings of the holy spirit to accomplish these things may you go forth into the world to stand up speak out and live into the reign of christ our savior amen share this share on facebook opens in new window facebook email a link to a friend opens in new window ship to that country was prohibited yes trump was president at the time it was embarrassing to be an american abroad two weeks after we returned covid 19 shut the world down and the few speaking gigs i had lined up were moved online it was also a time of awakening and disruption political unrest along with radical polarization the gradual erosion of democracy with cases such as afghanistan and myanmar inflation along with massive corporate consolidation over housing multiple genocides and wars the countless mass shootings happening within the united states plus more awareness of brutal killings of black boys and men a skyrocketing cost of living the increasing gap of wealth gap inequality erosion of certain rights such as abortion an increase of global average temperatures all growing worse under trump s watch however i was able to stay engaged i continue reading it s been five years share this share on facebook opens in new window facebook email a link to a friend opens in
