o get kicked out he shrugged those off and acted the devil s advocate in the end he shifted his weight so he was square to tara he looked her in the eye and said i have been surprised only a few times in the past i know this judge and he is going to send you to jail the question is for how long tara choked up immediately i looked down at the letters from the bishops that i was holding i was wondering if i should bring them up tara spoke up before i could my therapist jaimee said that if i was sentenced to jail i should ask for an ankle montior house arrest he again rolled his eyes in frustration if you were here in ogden i would ask for a daily morning check in but living down there he will just send you to jail with that he left we found our seats next to steff in the court room while we were in our private conference room steff was monitering the mood of judge decaria she said that he was rather fast and hard on a couple of offenders who were trying to get more time to line up an attorney it is always interesting to see what different people wear to court from sweats and a t shirt to suit and tie a young white guy who obviously from the sores on his face and the nervous twitch in his arms had a methamphetamine addiction he was wearing a hoodie and jeans i guessed to myself that the judge would be a little harder on him because of his attire and casual attitude toward the courts i believe his pants were even pegged there was a young well dressed black guy with a cute white girlfriend he was an infrequent drug user and had messed up one time in the past 6 months while on the job his boss had sent a letter to the judge explaining that he was a hard worker and would be allowed to keep the job the judge listened to both defendants asking few questions he gave the defense and prosecution time to say what they would he gave the defendants an opportunity to make a statement and then when he was ready he passed sentence along with steff and tara i was watching judge decaria closely there were only a few sentencing judgements on the calendar i could see him pondering as he listened i could tell in each case the moment in which he made his decision my problem was i never did guess correctly at the decision the cute white girlfriend was in tears as the black guy was cuffed and led to prison the meth addict was told to check in with ap p the following morning he walked out a free man we were getting more and more nervous as the judge did his work i was optimistically reminded of the story of elijah he asked for buckets of water to be brought and thrown on his sacrificial lamb all would know that only the power of god could consume the drenched alter tara was going to jail bucket after bucket was dowsing our hope mr ricketts had been at the pulpit working through his load of files inmates in cuffs and shackles were led in and out finally he called number 1 tara robertson he began his defense first of all your honor i feel that the recommendations are very fair another bucket of water sixty days in jail is quite considerate after viewing this offender s history however she had been clean for 3 years prior to this mistake it was a prescription medication that she took from work not street drugs in fact she has never participated in street drugs she has been working with lds family services and she is doing very well she is the mother of 4 young children ages 3 6 9 and 11 she is a full time mother and fulfills those responsibilities while her husband is at work it should be noted that he works for the state with adult probation and parole she is needed at home and if she were currently living here in weber county i would move that she be placed in the daily reporting program whereas they do not have such a program in utah county i would hope that she could be placed under home confinement with an ankle bracelet or a like program i was fairly impressed at this point i was fearful that mr ricketts would throw tara to the wolves at the jail especially after his opening i was now getting hopeful then i looked at the judge judge decaria had that stern look on his face he was hearing the same old song and dance from mr ricketts and he was not going to give in to the defense easily he asked the prosecution to speak they offered one line we submit to the court in other words we would ask the court to follow the recommendations on the psi the judge then asked tara if she had anything to add she spoke if the court will remember i was admitted to drug court and did very well until they denied my transfer to utah county i had clean ua s and made every class and appointment before you your honor as well i have been attending 12 step meetings and am ready to begin vocational rehabilitation therapy in utah county i have been working with my bishops and have letters here from them she held up the letters mr ricketts took them from her she continued i am a good mother and my husband and daughters need me she was choked up now with tears falling my husband works 5 days a week and i need to be home to get the kids to school and help them with homework as well as other motherly duties she was now too emotional to continue the judge asked her how she was paying for therapy private insurance was her response mr ricketts cut in these letters from her bishops prove she has a great support group at home he then read bishop elder s letter in its entirety at the end of the 3rd and last paragraph the prosecution unexpectedly cut in your honor i found a note here from the drug court prosecutor mr dean he says that special consideration should be given mrs robertson because she was mistakenly admitted to drug court and while there she was very diligent in her attendance spotless in her ua s and hard working in her classes mr ricketts whispered over and over in tara s ear this is good this is very good the judge gathered himself it was clear he had made his decision and was ready to pass judgement it is the will of this court that mrs robertson be sentenced to zero to five years in the utah state prison my breath caught in my throat tears welled up in my eyes prison he continued that sentence will be suspended and mrs robertson will report to adult probation and parole she will be confined to her home with a monitering bracelet for 90 days she will not possess alcohol nor drugs nor frequent places where they are obtained she will enter into treatment as deamed necessary by adult probation and parole she will pay a fine of 950 00 she will notify her agent of all prescriptions at the time they are prescribed he looked up he glanced over the whole audience as he said mrs robertson your are not receiving this sentence of home confinement because your kids need you that would be the case for every defendant you earned this sentence based on merit your hard work in drug court and other meetings you will report directly to ap p do you have any questions i wiped tears from my eyes i felt the spirit as a pillar of fire consumed the wet sacrifice only the power of god could produce such a miracle only the power of god sent tara home that day posted by week that i am not a cop because i am too laid back and cool it makes me a little angry that the inmates here see me as more of a friend than an officer i do feel however that 100 of this inmate population would slime any other officer before me i befriend for safety and it works last week an officer was retrieving a dinner tray through a cuff port when he was squirted with an unknown liquid slimed turns out it was a mixture of milk urine and feces when i came on shift the officer was sitting in the control room in inmate sweat pants waiting to go home disgusting we got a new inmate this morning he is not all together there mentally he called in about 2 hours ago he broke his pen and shoved the inner tube up his penis working here we learn not to automatically take an inmate at his word so we drew straws winner got to investigate if the inmate was lying or telling the truth the sergeant won he then proved why he is the sergeant try to pee the few drops of bluish green urine backed up the inmate s story he is now in the infirmary undergoing minor surgery the other officers decided they would give me a going away present as i am transferring to another post they told a certain inmate that nicknames himself crystal that i would miss him when i left they went on to inform the inmate that he is that cause of the transfer too much chemistry between us this is the same inmate that i have had to tell repeatedly that it is inappropriate for him to say i love you make i love you hand signs or mouth the same words when i come by his cell i might just have to call in sick for my last night of work and it would not be a lie posted by ryan at 12 23 am 1 comment email this blogthis share to x share to facebook share to pinterest saturday september 10 2011 allergies i used to laugh at weak people who blamed a runny nose on allergies i now have that runny nose and congestion not from sickness it must be allergies what a weakling my eyes were burning they felt so tired yet i had had 9 hours of restful sleep my sinuses were congested and stuffed up my nose was running i could not speak without sounding like my nose was plugged i had nothing to blame it on but allergies it was sunday morning tara and i were attending the eden 1st ward for our last time we had finished moving all our stuff to pleasant grove it was fast and testimony meeting i have felt the promptings of the spirit in the past i have had great experiences where i have acted on the prompting and been blessed accordingly i have had learning experiences where i have been slow to act or have found excuses not to act and i have been blessed accordingly i have made promises to myself and to the lord to try to follow the promptings i receive lest he stop sending them well there i was in sacrament meeting congested unable to speak clearly feeling a strong prompting to get up and bear testimony i didn t have any great experiences that i wanted to relate i didn t want to give a public farewell over the pulpit i shrugged the feeling off using my allergies as justification a few minutes went by i became very conscious of the fact that i could now breath clearly i sniffed my runny nose was gone i felt an overwhelming feeling that i needed to bear my testimony i said a silent prayer asking forgiveness for being so weak i thanked my father in heaven for giving me a second chance i then lunged from my pew my body still did not want to make the walk to the front of the chapel i don t remember what i said i was bearing testimony for only a few minutes i am not sure if my words touched anyone however i do remember that for those few minutes i had a total relief from my allergies i spoke clearly i didn t sniffle i followed the spirit i learned a valuable lesson my testimony was strengthened as i finished i walked back down to my place next to my wife with a smile on my face and my nose began to run anew posted by ryan at 4 10 am no comments email this blogthis share to x share to facebook share to pinterest wednesday august 31 2011 i love to see the temple i grew up a california boy but having been born in slc and currently raising my kids here in utah i have grown to love it one of the biggest pluses about living here is the number of temples along the wasatch front there are 9 if you count logan ogden bountiful salt lake jordan river draper oquirrh mountain timpanogos and provo i have driven the wasatch many times with my kids i point out the temples and offer prizes if they can name them however presently they are too good at it i can t afford the prizes they would win one evening drive the spirit touched us as we passed the salt lake temple we all joined our voices singing i love to see the temple it was great the spirit filled our van and we all felt an immense love toward the lord and his temples that started a tradition the kids will break out in song as they spot the angel moroni on the temple spire i love that song especially when sung by small innocent little girl voices about 3 years ago i was going through a tough period in my life tara was not living with us i was in the apartment above the garage next to her parents house in eden i had just gotten a job at automated structures i was driving home from work it had been a long day i enjoyed that job but i had so many things that were up in the air being juggled with no known outcome that i was stressed out and struggling to find peace the road construction did not help my sour mood i couldn t take a straight shot home i had the radio on loud to a station that played harder music fitting for my pitiful state of being i found myself going up hill east on the via duct over the railroad tracks on 21st street as i cleared the summit i spied the angel moroni on the ogden temple the spirit yelled at me to turn off the radio i immediately obeyed and my car was flooded with the comfort of the spirit testifying to me that all would be well my eyes teared up i was sobbing as i pulled over next to the sacred temple alone with a cracking voice i sang our song i love to see the temple i knew then as i know now that the savior is watching over me he knows the details of my life i need to seek after him but every once in a while he will send me a tender mercy as a reminder that he is here by my side i will find peace and happiness in him living his gospel i said a prayer of thanksgiving and smiled the rest of the way home posted by ryan at 10 08 pm no comments email this blogthis share to x share to facebook share to pinterest end the saga of the troll
