sam and jamie home about sam and jamie feeds posts comments sport climbing regionals 2019 may 20 2019 by sam brunson saturday we drove through pouring rain to madison heights michigan in the northern suburbs of detroit after a great middle eastern dinner and a night in the madison heights motel 6 jane and mary went to planet rock for sport climbing regionals i though i was going to revive this blog at least temporarily with an explanation of what regionals is but i see that last time i posted here two years ago i explained it this year though brought with it a couple changes first in addition to climbing two local comps to qualify for regionals climbers have to place in the top 20 in at least one and the second is jane is now a female youth b and what that means is instead of top rope climbing she has to lead climb essentially that means the rope isn t attached to a fixed point at the top of the wall instead she has to carry her rope with her and clip in every five or ten feet and that rope can get heavy when you re 40 or 50 feet up the top 10 climbers in each category progress to divisionals in a month and jane and mary are both going to divisionals if you re interested in leave a comment sport climbing regionals 2017 may 14 2017 by sam brunson a quick primer on rock climbing competitions during the season jane and mary have to climb in two local comps to qualify for regionals local comps are fairly laid back basically the kids have three hours to climb they can climb as many routes problems as they want the different problems are scored by difficulty and the kids top three scores count then they have regionals in fact jane had her regional competition on saturday and mary on sunday in regionals all of the kids climb three problems they have five minutes to climb one minute of transition and five minutes of rest during their rest they sit with their backs to the wall other than a brief preview before the competition starts they don t get to figure out how to get to the top until their roped in the seconds counting down and they get one shot they climb until a they reach the top b they fall off or c time runs out and they re scored based on the highest point they get to the top ten kids from each age division move on to the next level divisionals jane got 5th in her group and mary 9th in hers which means we ll be in minnesota next month if months and at miles s last appointment our pediatrician encouraged us to start as soon as we felt like it he also recommended skipping rice cereal and moving straight to oatmeal so we did as i got the
