fiction short stories novelettes novels full length books poetry books and am quite fond of book series too i also read most genres though there are some i am more likely to read than others but hey i will give pretty much anything a go you never know when you are about to uncover a hidden gem unless you read it you don t know if you will love it and that is part of the magic of books i like to do looking forward to 2026 posted on january 9 2026 by sammicoxwriter reading goals for november and december 2025 i honestly didn t know if i was going to bother to finish this post and share it it already feels like these books were read ages ago and i feel pretty certain that i read more books in december but for the life of me i can t remember what they were however i thought it would be good to at least try and wrap up last year in so much as trying to determine how many books i did actually read i didn t hit my yearly goal of a book a week but i wasn t far off with 48 only 4 short i m planning on setting the same target for 2026 but of course as usual i will be hoping for more and probably achieving less it is the way of things here as i look back over 2025 i realise that i have been struggling again to keep up with my book reviews i do wonder if it is time to call it at day at sammi loves books i clearly don t have the time i need to keep a book blog going but whenever this thought occurs to me i feel sad i ve kept this site going for over 10 years and to let it go now feels like giving up so once more i plan to alter my book reviews to try and accommodate fitting this blog into my life when i clearly have very little free time the main format will be reviews in ten points or less yes that means bullet points but i will at least try and keep the appearance the same and i will attempt to maintain my previous format for books that form part of a series if i ve already started reviewing the series i hope that will keep the blog looking cohesive so those are my is rector of champton he has been there for eight years living at the rectory alongside his widowed mother opinionated fearless ever so slightly annoying audrey and his two dachshunds cosmo and hilda when daniel announces a plan to install a lavatory in church the parish is suddenly and unexpectedly divided as lines are drawn long buried secrets come dangerously close to destroying the apparent calm of the village and then anthony bowness cousin to bernard de floures patron of champton is found dead at the back of the church stabbed in the neck with a pair of secateurs as the police moves in and the bodies start piling up daniel is the only one who can try and keep his fractured community together and catch a killer micro book review i usually try to keep away from books written by people who are famous for other things why because there is a good chance that their books are being published because they are famous for other things and publishers have a fanbase already in existence to tap into this doesn t mean the book is going to be terrible but neither does it mean that the book is going to be fabulous either so where do i stand on this particular offering if i m being honest i didn t enjoy it yet him indoors who also read it really really did enjoy it let s start with what i did like i liked the fact that canon clement loves stationary it was interesting to read about the job of a rector and how a parish is run the vocation and religious elements are what made the story for him indoors i liked the two dachshunds what didn t i like the characters i found i wasn t particularly invested in what happened to any one of them the pace of the book felt slow now i know this can be a problem with the first book in a series because there is so much groundwork to lay and then the books that come after do tend to move along a bit quicker but i still felt there was an element of plodding through it to be overcome you can work out from reading the book that it is set in the 80s but i m not sure it is explicitly stated anywhere there s a lack of tension in the story so nothing to draw you in and keep you focused on the crime and its subsequent solving we ve not seen the tv adaptation but plan on watching it soon so i can compare it to the book the cast looks good and i hope i find it more engaging than i did the book will i be reading the second book in the series maybe at some point i had high hopes for this book but they didn t materialise yet now the foundation has been laid down for the series book 2 might be better favourite quotes i didn t make a establishment figures so when a young journalist approaches him with an investigation into sex trafficking blomkvist cannot resist waging war on the powerful figures who control this lucrative industry the murder when a young couple is found dead in their stockholm apartment it s a straightforward job for inspector bublanski and his team the killer left the weapon at the scene and the fingerprints on the gun point in only one direction the girl who played with fire ex security analyst lisbeth salander is wanted for murder her history of unpredictable and vengeful behaviour makes her an official danger to society but no one can find her the only way salander can be reached is by computer but she can break into almost any network she chooses micro book review i found the girl with the dragon tattoo addictive reading and it was the same with the girl who played with fire again just under a week was needed to read a 500 page novel and once more i seriously struggled to put it down it was a good sequel some books don t live up the one s that come before it but this one did it s hard not to root for lisbeth salander even with her periodically murky morals yet she doesn t target people that don t deserve it mikael is a great supporter of salander even if he can t get her to talk to him i found this one of the best parts of the story the world might not believe in her but he does i also like as well as find uncomfortable how real the book feels the characters feel real the problems in the world feel real are real and this lends a great believability to the story i enjoyed reading about sweden and actually learned somethings which i didn t know which is always a bonus when reading fiction but i m not sure i would ever get on with cheese and marmalade on toast i m strictly a one or the other kind of girl this paragraph from my review of the first book in the millennium trilogy bares repeating of course with most crime based stories some passages are hard to read this book is no exception so a warning there if you have yet to read the book once again as soon as i finished this book i started on the final one in the trilogy in fact i read the trilogy so quickly and with no break between the books that if i m honest i struggle to mark the point where one ends and the next begins favourite quotes it proved once again the theory that no security system december 3 2025 by sammicoxwriter story summary from goodreads for daisy and her husband alec a long awaited break by the sea becomes a busman s holiday when a local ladies man turns up murdered on the beach yet in the coastal town of westcombe it s hard to find someone who wouldn t have wanted george enderby dead the married casanova s scandalous seductions had earned him the enmity of every jilted lover and cuckolded husband in the area not to mention the resentment of his long suffering wife and now as daisy and alec investigate among the seaside cliffs beautiful beach and quaint village this holiday idyll seems nothing more than a sinister backdrop for cold blooded murder while the murderer may be closer than daisy thinks micro book review this might be one of my favourite daisy s yet certainly my favourite out of the recent crop i ve read i loved everything about this story the setting the characters and the storyline i really wish they would make a tv adaptation of this series they make good gentle reading and i m certain they would make good gentle watching too undemanding but engaging this mystery might be a little predictable in places but it is never silly nor is the culprit obvious the descriptions of the little devon seaside village are charming the characters entertaining sid is fabulous and some of the others read like old friends and the young doctor in training and his girlfriend are fun and the mystery itself is a good one there is very little sympathy to be had for the victim because he is a rotter but that also means that the list of suspects isn t particularly short one thing i do like about these books is that although they are light and although they are cosy we are always reminded that many of the characters carry with them the scars of war a quick read with an interesting meandering plot and where the solution to the puzzle isn t revealed until the end this was a delightful light addition to the series and as always i m eager to get stuck in the next one favourite quotes it seems to be the fashion to give the top detectives rather thick assistants look at dr watson and do you know this new chappie the belgian
