journal handmade books permalink 17 04 2026 by ukma leave a comment struggling with a schedule after my big catch up on monday and the project from the roben s nest i allowed another thing to creep in sketchbook revival i mean there is so much out there i really need to start ignoring emails about even free challenges so i will sneak in more layers today and get caught up to yesterday layer and have a little think about how to handle the 100 days of layers till the end this is another one where i was a bit lucky in that many of the prompts worked on a single page and by adding in the completion layers i finished another side layer 51 involved a bit of scribbling it was tricky but i did it on a very textured pages with a fine nib pen layer 52 was spattering no old toothbrush so i used a fan brush spatters on both sides because the paint i picked matched one of the threads from the sewing the blue dashed circles matched the other thread so that felt right so i still had paint from that spattering on my desk and i most of it and the fan brush i added a thick rim of paint to the edges of the affirmation i had selected for this page it s a technique i love because it leaves such a textured frame i m calling the affirmation and final page together as layer 53 and and the final page with what was left of the paint i watered it down and for layer 54 the crumpled paper to print prompt was a fun one and that added just the right touch to a not very full side and it used up the very last bits of the paint so yeah i worked on things at the same time or i would have had to yesterday and spent the entire day in bed gulping painkillers not ideal feel well enough today to add to this scheduled post but that s about it ugh not collages not layers this is one called the deck of dreams from the roben s nest apparently it is a class she did previously she was able to now share with us there it involves a collage sheet so a bit like the masterboard i have one the go then cards that get covered and attached with a book ring there is a bit of stitching involved and here are some of mine i was happy to finally manage french knots that looked good never managed that before but her tutorial was a good one i need to work on the spacing of my blanket stitch but i do like the effect i made a little box sleeve to house it and here is a quick shot of that and a few of comments woyww 880 that s a big number happy woyww to all apparently 880 is 16 92 years of woyww crikey it looks like the anniversary week is 884 there has been no mention of an atc swap but i wonder if i should be thinking that way or not or did i just miss it or forget no matter here is my desk not too bad i was working on a couple more little collages and can share those without much about the process it s all just pushing papers about but one day it might be interesting to document my thought process as i complete one hummm still working on one side then the other and trying to mix it up rather than always horizontal orientation collage 14 is mostly oranges i only have the 3 4 and the 7 left already cut so trying to use them all before i die cut another set none really worked well but in the end the 3 won out it was indeed tedious this one collage 15 was green and diagonal only the second of those so far and i saved the usable scraps to add to the masterboard i am working on after each and every project not a lot of progress as the scraps were all pretty tiny i do like to little pops of black look back a day to compare i wonder if i will complete the 52 collages before i complete the masterboard and i expect you will see more of poppy outside nowadays as she is very keen to be in the catios the garden side in the morning when it is a huge sun trap and the lounge window in the afternoon when that catches the sun in the corner you see her in she was not super keen on the window one when it was just a cage on the lawn but once we put it up to window height she woyww tags collage woyww permalink 14 04 2026 by ukma 1 comment it s layers 47 to 50 but all one page so yesterday i spoke about the pages i completed and which ones i liked the ones i liked were those i felt were true to both my style and my aesthetic by that i mean the colours the placement etc so when the prompts came out of the jar and i saw a way to make them all work on a single page i went for it layer 47 involved painting a shape well i knew i had a stash of painted shapes in my fodder keeper after my big sort out of my scraps so i dragged them out and played with placement i wasn t totally ok with them but then i decided to use my finger knife to cut away the white areas and that made a huge different for me layer 48 was adding the glow of a metallic so i doodled with a gold pen layer 49 was adding a pop of colour and here is where i let my own preferences win out my colour was black there was a ton of colour already on the page so i felt no need to add more also i felt no need to shift to another page to stay true to the exact wording of the prompt back to my fodder keeper and looking for stuff to use up i had this one paper doll cut out and also the black arcs and they were perfect together i was really liking the page and felt it was ready for an affirmation i only had the ones from the mindful community printed on white or cream paper i knew i could convert them to white on black in affinity or by re typing the words myself but then i spied something else in my fodder keeper and that sealed the deal for me layer 50 and the layer that completed the page was my own be affirmations and they were perfection really really happy with this page in the end sure it s a little more chaotic than some i ve made but i managed to use up the doll the scribbly watercolour circles 90 of the be affirmations and all of the black arcs and i def need to make more of those they are so handy and i completed a page there was really no point in the process where i felt stuck and each layer came to me with the prompt quite naturally and easy the interesting thing for me is i don t think in a million years i would have put this combination of things together on this background to create this page without the layer jar prompts while i almost always ignore prompts in challenges thinking they are mostly for people who get stuck and need the nudge that has literally never been me if anything i have too many ideas to keep up with my problem has always been that i rush on and often my second or third idea is the one that would have made the page better best even with the layers being made one a day my brain takes the time to process the prompt i tend to do the prompt then pull the next one right away then i can mull it over and consider how best to apply it before it s time t actually do it idk why i can never do that when i am just working in my art journal why i have to rush to completion is a single sitting i need to sort out how to make the point in my 100 days of layers i only have let me count eight completed pages i gotta say i hate how wordpress handles images sometimes the lack of control over the image resolution in tiled galleries is a bit frustrating but that s only seven i hear you mutter well i have an eighth page done that comprises layers 47 50 but i won t share that till tomorrow i have my favourites of course and they would be the ones that are the most tru to my style i feel like the first page i completed the yellow lady was very much me the butterflies one and the lady with the big flowers and the trio of silhouettes are as well the others i think i got too wrapped up in following the prompts from the jar without taking enough time to consider where i was putting them and also the ones i made during the frenzy of a co create never really please me but hey ho live and learn an example of how i worked with the prompts in my own way will come with that eighth page now i will also add a shot of something i have been thinking about since i made that masterboard of my scraps i really love the page bases i made from those and i had the idea that rather than wait till i had a big sort out to create the masterboard i would make one as i go along i started with a big sheet in a mixed media pad that was a whole other thing lol i had two of these one with about 4 other masterboards i made a while ago and one with about five or so blank pages i undid the coil pilfered the hard backs for a handmade book club project and reassembled the blank pages and the previous masterboards into a single pad then i began with the scraps from the most recent collages that were still on my desk ready to be swept into the bin and so it begins i figure this will live close to my desk and every time i am working on a project and have leftover scraps i ll just stick them down i might scatter them i might build on the area i started we ll see but in the end only truly un usable scraps will go in the bin and i should have a fun masterboard to cut into two more pages fot this journal sorry that got super wordy with not a lot of new stuff but getting past the 50 day point felt worth a recap of
