Text of the page (random words):
he show aleks pollner is from seattle but is now studying at cranbrook and she told me that during a critique someone said oh that is so pacific northwest when she asked what exactly is pnw about it the response was about leisure a connection to the outdoors the pace and the quietude and so maybe it is more productive to let visitors decide what pnw design is through their experience of the show that could be really useful to try to get feedback from visitors after they visit the exhibition do they get a clear idea of what it is do they get confused are they just then introduced to it was it what they expected is it something they think they can integrate into their lifestyle d oh yeah because you studied art history correct right and i studied architecture history so we both know that for example finnish design didn t just happen they worked hard to define it they went through a period of confusion not understanding who they were aesthetically but then they had events and discussion participated in the world s fairs and biennales they made a collective effort to figure out what it was that characterized design in that region and what means did they have to do that they had government support as in the netherlands and london etc and those initiatives are what pushes design to the forefront of the country and brings out the most talented and most creative and innovative design because the government see the value and we don t have that in america that is a really good point i wish we did even in korea it is up and coming because the government has allocated support for design and do you think that they just have a different cultural value that they place on design i think that a country such as korea whose economy is very strong but very new just saw the value of bolstering that economy through strong design and it is as simple as that i wonder where or who they looked to make that decision maybe all of europe i guess yes europe and japan japan also supports traditional craft and making they have dynasties of ceramics and textiles which have been really important to maintaining the culture and continue to be to this day so there is a strong legacy that they are supporting but on the other hand what we are experiencing here is what i have also seen in tel aviv and other places where we haven t had those types of support there is entrepreneurship and a spirit of well what if i do this on my own is taking over and succeeding so that is a really interesting conversation e right despite a lack of support from the government there is still a human interest in supporting a design culture i think that s exactly it because of the lack of government support despite that and because of economic factors lining up the way they did people were still getting an education in design but then they decided they didn t need to compromise that education and decided to go for it because they had nothing to lose and i think those kinds of initiatives could only really be generated in places that didn t have strong support in a kind of frontier like brooklyn and detroit where there was a strong education system but nothing for designers to do when they graduated until recently is bam a non profit structure who are the major supporters yes i would like to see more from the tech community and to that end i am doing a project next year which will focus more on tech and craft digital craft i mean look right outside our door we have expedia ebay everything in redmond how can that not funnel into some kind of support for the only arts museum on the eastside i would love to see that that would be amazing it would ___________________________ photo credits a john buck at greg kucera gallery b charlie schuck for ladies and degree in environmental design from north carolina state university in january of 2011 he launched the architecture firm best practice which engages in a diverse range of work from residential projects to large scale office cultural works best practice takes inspiration from the real life needs of their clients and choreographs intuitive experiences all while seeking to provide innovative solutions that explore the precarious balance between content beauty function and the realities of budgets time lines prior to best practice ian worked for over eleven years at several award winning firms including internships with nbbj and mithun nearly four years as an associate with e cobb architects and as the senior architect at domestic architecture his work has received two aia awards and been published in numerous books and magazines including the ny times magazine wallpaper gray and the la times magazine in addition to his work as an architect ian teaches in the interior design department at cornish college of the arts and currently serves as a board member for arcade magazine 11 years ago sdf features visual artist olivia knapp meet olivia knapp a local visual artist who has a degree in fashion design from parsons experience as a printed textile designer and a passion for illustration she designed this year s sdf new year s card want one see below and read up on our creative friend while you re at it when did you know you wanted to become a graphic designer i consider myself more of a visual artist that happens to do some graphic design a lot of my work stands alone without a product brand or text my personal drawings are a good example of this i knew i wanted to make a change in 2007 when i was working as a fashion designer in nyc the work wasn t very creative and living in nyc was getting to me i missed being in my own head with a pen and paper in hand so i moved back to the northwest and took a job as a printed textile designer for nordstrom product group at the time i knew very little about textiles and printing but i knew i could draw drawing was my first love and i was desperate to find a way to get back to that everything since then has been a steady progression towards the work i do now what is your favorite type of graphic to design i like all types of graphic design the relevance and quality of a design interests me more than a specific application who what first inspired you to be a creative who what inspires you now i don t think anything specifically inspired me to be a creative i just naturally evolved in that direction creativity is how i ve learned to solve problems i am dyslexic so the conventional learning tools that were given to me growing up didn t really make sense in my world i had to rely more on my critical thinking skills than a prescribed formula to get results what s your motto prioritize instead of making long term goals priorities are directly related to your values and for that reason they keep you on the right track long term goals are just a reflection of what you think you want you could be working really hard towards a goal achieve it and then realize that it doesn t give you the satisfaction that you thought it would what advice do you have for other young creatives on how to do what they love for a living nurture what you are good at and don t go to art school or college unless you have the money large student loans can hold you back from opportunity when i graduated from parsons with loan payments due i had to take the job that paid the most rather than the job that was best for my creative path here is a link by noah bradley that gives some great alternatives to art school what s the last cultural experience you had i went to a cabaret rendition of the nightmare before christmas at the triple door the day before halloween i go every year loved it tell us about your creative habits what do you listen to where do you work when do you work i work from home during somewhat normal work hours and rarely skip meals i might work weekends here and there and take a couple days off between projects though i listen to a lot of classical and ambient music when i draw ólafur arnalds jon hopkins yann tiersen jonsi alex podcasts and audio books are always in the mix too i can t wait to download the audio book art fear i haven t read it yet what are you currently working on i am currently working on a project with deutsch inc for jägermiester i am really excited about this stay tuned how do you see your collaboration with sdf for the new year s cards as a way to support sdf s mission i ll take any opportunity to collaborate with a local non profit that supports the arts anytime local organizations and creatives can work together it strengthens our artist community here in seattle original artwork by olivia knapp our holiday cards are available by emailing hello seattledesignfoundation com 5 50 each or 25 for a set of 5 all proceeds go to supporting seattle s local creative talent 11 years ago meet 2014 grant winner stefani bartz 2014 has been such an incredible year for sdf we ve had success in fundraising spreading awareness about design in seattle and perhaps the most exciting of all we gave our first grant the 2014 grant theme was focusing on the feminine asking creatives to design for women or a particular female issue we were overjoyed to announce this year s winner stefani bartz whose project a lady is an online digital platform for young entrepreneurial women in order to promote the exchange of ideas collaboration and mentorship after receiving her grant for 2 500 as well as a design mentor to help her bring her project into reality we took a moment to catch up with stefani who what first inspired you to be a creative who what inspires you now i ve always been imaginative and constantly have about ten side projects going but it was in college i discovered i could make a career of it it was a pivotal point in my life but my family and friends weren t the least bit surprised apparently everyone knew i would go in a creative direction long before i did i m really inspired by people how they communicate with each other and connect with design like brands and technology people are so fascinating i love to try to guess someone s story that s what design is telling a story people can emotionally relate to and interact with it s guiding behavioral instincts to achieve a certain goal so understanding the way people think is key how has a lady changed from its original inception a lady started as my senior capstone project for the university of washington design program it was originally focused almost entirely on the mentorship aspect a way of pairing creative professionals and emerging designers similar to that of online dating but on a professional level the issue is incredibly complex so the solution had to become more comprehensive i broke it down into three main resources inspiration connection and advice from those in the field the mentorship program is to be implemented later on when more people are involved what s your motto if you can t dazzle them with your brilliance baffle them with your bullshit ever since i read that somewhere i ve loved it it s a pretty accurate description of my personality i like to surprise people show them something unexpected how do you feel about entering the world as a young creative i feel pulled in a million different directions there is so much opportunity and i want to do it all branding advertising film photography ux fashion it s hard to choose what comes next but i usually do what feels right even if there isn t always a logical reason it sounds cliché but it s always worked for me to follow my heart and see what happens things change along the way what advice do you have for other young creatives on how to do what they love for a living it s funny i am still a young creative myself and hardly feel qualified to be imparting wisdom but i would say treat your life like a project it s an empty canvas you can create and design it any way you like if you don t like something change it if you want something go get it there are no rules if you weren t a creative what would you be doing i ve always been interested in entrepreneurship or something business related i think i would be good at public relations or event planning i ve also always wanted to be a traveling photographer like for national geographic because they see such amazing things all around the world and capture those moments for everyone else to see i could have made a good nutritionist too because i m into health and wellness and all the science behind it obviously i have a diverse range of interests but design often coincides with many of them so it s the perfect field for me i m never bored what s the last cultural experience you had i had the privilege of attending the opening reception of tom geismar s sva master s series exhibition this month since i currently work for tom at chermayeff geismar haviv it was an amazing experience to see his wide range of work from hand drawn typography done during design school to the various marks and logos he has become so well known for the exhibition is up until october 18 th so anyone in new york should definitely stop by of the following options what do you think the next design grant theme should be definitely deepening connections between people there s a major disconnect created by all the social networking online dating and obsession with social media it leaves out a lot of the natural aspects of human interaction you recently moved to new york why i grew up in seattle but i ve traveled quite a bit and always knew i would move i m not one to settle new york stole my heart last summer when i moved out for an internship i knew i had to come back because the design and art community is unbelievably amazing but i could see myself working in paris or london someday i ve always been curious about how design changes abroad how can we be better at keeping young talent in seattle can you make it stop raining kidding seattle is fast becoming a hot spot for design and technology there s a lot of innovation happening there i think it comes down to personality compatibility i fit the east coast ambitious high energy driven culture i like to keep moving forward all the time seattle is more laid back which suits some people better tell us your creative habits you can almost always find me at a coffee shop i like to be around people and there s usually interesting art on the walls it s easy to be inspired when everything around you is constantly changing and of course i love coffee it s part of my seattle roots caffeine can be a strong motivator how will your idea stimulate seattle s creative culture there s an opportunity for women to step up and have a stronger presence in the creative fiel...
