content home about my other blogs all clear at brookfield jul 31 it was hot and humid just one day after the worst of the wildfire smoke had settled in our area but it s surprising what a difference a few hours make we had cancelled our friday trip to brookfield zoo because of the conditions but the next day things had improved dramatically cooler and with less smoke even the animals seemed to appreciate the change and were much more active than i would normally have expected at this time of year this was the first chance i d had to see the new bramsen tropical forest exhibit covering nearly three acres this is one of the largest primate habitats in any accredited u s zoo i would have taken more pictures but my granddaughter borrowed my camera to take her own shots here are some of the pictures that she took the most playful creatures enjoying the clearer air were the bears i managed to get some fairly good shots and thanks to the rollator i was able to get around and see visit to the chicago botanic garden to see their latest temporary art installation i also took a walk with the aid of the trusty rollator around some of the gardens in the words of the blurb on the garden s website evanescent is an immersive temporary sculpture that aims to capture the ephemerality and fragility of life through a familiar form the bubble like the bubble life is transient meant to be appreciated in the moment the creators of this delightful piece of artwork are peruvian artist renzo b larriviere and australian artist zara pasfield this particular installation has been shown in more than 65 cities all over the world and it certainly is well worth a visit these shimmering bubbles will be on display in the garden until september 20th so i may be able to get some more shots group from the garden club who took a field trip to ryerson woods conservation area last week we were there primarily to take a tour of the new net zero energy education center but also to view the native gardens there it was interesting to learn how with the help of modern technology the facility is able to generate more energy than it uses featured components and building materials chosen to meet net zero energy building requirements include a 21kw system of rooftop solar panels similar to what is found on a home or small business hvac systems and mechanical equipment with the highest efficiency ratings increased insulation values in the walls and roof high performing windows and strategic placement to help regulate temperature led lighting throughout buildings and parking lots occupancy sensors in rooms and daylight sensors in perimeter spaces epa indoor air plus requirements for paint and materials collision resistant glass windows to help reduce bird strikes first public building in lake county to gain passive house institute u s pre certification the general consensus of opinion was that if only some of these options were made more affordable more homeowners would be able to take advantage of them and thus significantly cut down on energy usage we got some useful ideas from the native gardens and i managed to capture a couple of shots of the wildlife at the roll may 30 with the aid of a rollator borrowed from our village s lending closet i was able to get around much of the chicago botanic garden the other day one hour of walking without having to sit down is quite an achievement these days so it looks like a rollator will be on my shopping list in the near future i get to use this one for three months so it will be a good test to see if it and me botanic garden flowers photography 30 comments arbor day and spring flowers apr 26 on friday a group of us from the garden club attended the tree planting ceremony at a local school in celebration of arbor day the kids 2nd through 5th grade put on an enjoyable program and as usual the school mascot seen in the background got the heartiest round of applause this was in some respects a learning experience for me earlier this year i was honered and to be honest completely stunned by being nominated as president of the club for the 26 27 season i ve only been a member for the past two years so this was something that i wasn t in the least expecting i feel like i have a lot to learn in a short amount of time so i ve been attending conventions meetings and events in order to get a handle on what s expected of me when my term begins in july i m terrified and yet at the same time looking forward to this new responsibility with more than 80 members the club is so well organized and the members are the friendliest people i have ever had the pleasure of working with so i m hoping to get plenty of help along the way meanwhile back home in our garden we have had a colorful show of photography 22 comments a sign of the times apr 10 so far this spring our dramatically changeable climate has seen bitterly cold temperatures one day and balmy 70f weather the next is it any wonder that plants wildlife and humans alike are having a hard time keeping up with the changes on one of the warmer days i took a very short walk in the woods at river trail nature center i have reached the conclusion that if i want to enjoy going around places like this where seating is limited i will have to invest in a walker with wheels and a seat who would have ever thought that we would be seeing signs like this at the forest preserve flowers are starting to bloom in the garden despite the critters digging up the bulbs this squirrel dug up one with the first shoots to appear above ground nibbled on it for a while and then seeing me watching from the window planted it back in the ground right side up how can you get mad when you see something as funny as that the hawk has paid several visits recently swooping through the garden sending animals and birds scurrying to avoid being caught he did manage to make a kill the other day and although it is rather a gruesome sight even the took while i was at the orchid show at the chicago botanic gardens last week i made two trips there one so that i could take my time and get plenty of pictures and the other with the family to just enjoy the show isn t nature wonderful with so many different shapes colors and sizes these orchids are truly astounding the show runs through march 22nd so if you are in the area i can definitely the theme for this year s orchid show at the chicago botanic garden with an emphasis on all things 60 s and 70 s as you will see they captured the mood perfectly and as always the arrangements were absolutely stunning with some great music from the 60 s and 70 s playing in the background we wandered around from room to room feeling quite nostalgic as we took in all the colorful sights and listened to songs by otis redding the beatles and others from that era the atmosphere was one of pure joy as people could be heard singing along to some old favorites the orchid show runs through march 22nd so if you re in the area i can highly recommend a visit with 10 000 orchids on display this spectacular show is not to be missed i ll be posting more pictures soon with some close ups of
