here thank you so much for your readership i appreciate you and your time truly i ve seen a lot of new names and faces come through mostly from the letter i wrote back in january about belle burden s book strangers which netflix is now making into a movie starring gwyneth paltrow how do we feel about the casting leave a comment today s newsletter getting rejected publishing anyway and why saying yes to yourself matters more plus zeitgeist y if you haven t read it that s okay there are no major spoilers in my writeup but i do discuss financial plotlines mentioned in the book you know what the funniest part is about all of this that newsletter might never have happened had my original plans for it actually followed through 12 thoughts i had while reading strangers the hottest new divorce drama shindy chen jan 30 read full story instead it became my most successful newsletter ever since writing on substack weekly more than two years ago 27k views from a single letter whew you see after reading strangers i pitched vogue to see if they wanted my write up on it because i know they do book reviews and commentary like many women i too resonated deeply with burden s story about spousal deceit and financial indifference i didn t hear back from them not even after a follow up and in journalism if you don t hear back by a second time then your idea s dead in the water at least to them and still i write this is a fraction of all the rejections i receive i d like to think it s a combo of gracing their inboxes at the right time and the more times you show up the greater your chances of success did i fret about it no instead i simply decided to publish the letter on substack and boy am i glad i did i wasn t going to let a non response prevent me from getting it out into the wild had vogue published my article i m certain i would not be showing up in most of your inboxes here today i m shindy i sold my financial content company and now i write this weekly culture money and lifestyle substack i m a journalist and bestselling author featured in forbes the wall street journal business insider bankrate cheddar tv and huffpost if you haven t yet and would like to join more one of many things i do in my portfolio career i get told no all the time in many cases it s not even a no it s crickets and silence does that bother me no does that deter me no many of my article ideas do get greenlit and published and for those i m grateful for everything else i just know i have to keep pitching just like the world keeps turning in my annual planning exercises i know that in receipts from both most times my ideas may intersect with others and that s okay i m not precious about this someone somewhere always has the brilliant same idea as yours but only whoever s first at getting it out into the world deserves the credit for example i pitched writing about art city in tucumcari new mexico last april before time said this past march it was one of the world s greatest places in america last september i proposed an article about letting ai do your travel planning and then what do have here a new york times tech writer published an article yesterday about you guessed it ai and travel planning anyway eventually the right magical combo of relationships kismet and my original ideas will land my name on their pages i know this to be true the culture has all of us reclaiming our power by saying no and that s great when it comes to avoiding people pleasing and taking back our time and energy for ourselves personally i ve gotten waaaaay better at saying no to things i know i will not enjoy doing with absolutely no feelings of guilt or obligation at all rather than suffering through it but if everyone s saying no to each other then who s saying yes you are to yourself i m watching beef season 2 netflix chaotic wild sinister funny i m not sure how to sum up this series except i m happy it s over because it just made me super anxious in a good way i also didn t watch season 1 because these are anthologies so i ll go back and try it lee cronin s the mummy now in theatres fun gory and gross produced by the guy who directed saw so you know what to expect
