ial arts usually abbreviated into hema and the point i d like to bring up is that i feel people often put too much emphasis on the looks of their practice tools in other words they have this weird hang up where they only want to practice with something that looks like a sword i find that fixation rather odd since in my own experience it simply doesn t make that much of a difference to the vast majority of beginners for the most part what they really need to learn is how to move their body whether with or without the sword and even with the sword what really matters is how they use their body to move the weapon this way the precise characteristics of the weapon don t really have that much of an effect upon the quality of practice well all right the weapon has to be within certain parameters so as not to teach the beginner too many bad habits but these parameters are quite broad the difference between practicing with a broom handle and not practicing at all is much much larger than between practicing with a broom handle and with a simulator that actually looks like a sword sometimes this even brings up gatekeeping questions like do those people really want to practice or do they just want to feel cool while holding an object that looks like a sword not nice i know but it just comes up especially when i run out of ideas on how to motivate people in my club to practice more at home or more generally outside the group practice sessions and then that brings up the real question is it just me is it a factor that i m probably less strictly visually oriented than most people and put more emphasis into the tactile and proprioceptive senses than most maybe other people do feel it s not like practicing with a sword when the object they re holding doesn t visually resemble a sword i wouldn t know since i m not them but i guess i would like to know similarly maybe experience plays into it as well i ve fooled around with swords long enough to be able to develop some practice plans and routines for myself even though they might not be the most optimal this experience may also have given me a much better reference inside my head about what a sword should feel like so i might be subconsciously compensating for the differences in length balance presence or absence of a crossguard etc when i practice with a tool that bears less physical resemblance to a sword what if other people who lack this experience just find themselves being thrown off by the disparities in the practice tool s features because compensating for those disparities doesn t come as intuitively to them as it does to me it s not as if i don t have my own struggles in adapting to different practice tools probably most noticeably when i resume practicing with more restrictive sparring glove mittens after a long while of using only five fingered gloves and that s just with me as the point of reference just an intermediate level student of the sword at best and far from being a master maybe somebody with even more experience would also have more wisdom to understand the fixation and find a better way to deal with it that s it for the time being i guess i never promised a conclusion or even coherence make of it what you will random interesting find at the siwalima museum near ambon february 28 2026 march 1 2026 pradana p m leave a comment i haven t been in a particularly coherent state for over a month so here s a long overdue update from my visit to the siwalima museum above ambon in the moluccas in indonesia obviously and since i don t really have the brainpower to go over all the interesting items here s a sword well a couple but the real focus here is the one on the upper right let s have a closer look on that one the hilt seems to resemble that of a dutch klewang and was probably cribbed off one on the other hand the blade seems to be of local manufacture with a flat triangular ish cross section probably with a slight appleseed edge i m not sure about the exact length since i didn t bring a good measuring tool but it seemed to be slightly longer than a standard klewang maybe around 65 to 68 cm let s say 26 27in in the blade the grip material is also something of a mystery below the orange ish cloth wrapping and i can t even be sure if the grip is original rather than a restoration the weapon itself could be a composite cobbled together by the museum but given that the klewang hilt isn t really that old appearing in the last decades of the 19th century odds are the weapon is an authentic creation from the late 19th or early affordable price points than most other hema historical european martial arts blunt practice swords ostensibly without making unacceptable compromises to their workmanship and handling this naturally got me curious and i was also in need of a steel hema sabre in the heavier category say over 700 grams the kind of thing some people would call military sabres in contrast to duelling ones though i under 60 euros the total price with shipping but before taxes and everything was just short of 245 euros which means that the adept sabre cost with shipping about the same as most other hema sabre models without before shipping that s a pretty big deal for me in a corner of the world where shipping costs are higher than usual and the average income is much lower than say the us or europe here s banting setir sebentar untuk mengunjungi media sosial kami di instagram atau facebook atau membaca artikel artikel pengantar di wordpress terlebih dahulu artikel ini ditujukan bagi anggota baru di gwaith i megyr cabang bandung yang sudah beberapa kali mengikuti latihan dan mulai perlu mendapatkan peralatan latihan milik pribadi supaya tidak terus menerus bergantung kepada peralatan cadangan yang dipinjamkan oleh anggota lain jadi tidak dijamin akan tepat guna bagi pembaca di luar konteks tersebut pada umumnya peralatan pertama yang perlu dimiliki sebelum memulai latihan adalah pakaian dan sepatu yang layak untuk kegiatan olah raga selain itu tidak ada salahnya membeli memiliki sarung tangan ringan sesuai penjelasan dalam pengantar belanja tentang pelindung tangan tidak perlu membeli jenis atau merk yang terlalu mahal karena kegunaan utamanya hanyalah untuk mencegah lecet dan goresan bagi tangan yang belum terbiasa memegang pedang alat pertama yang sebaiknya didapatkan untuk membeli dan menggunakan pedang kayu dari produsen lain tetapi pada dasarnya kami tidak dapat menjamin bahwa mutu dan ukurannya akan sesuai untuk kegunaan latihan anggota yang memiliki dana berlebih juga diperbolehkan membeli pedang sintetis dari nilon atau hdpe sumber utamanya di dalam negeri adalah arpio shop tetapi ada pula produksi internal di bandung yang tentu saja tidak tersedia untuk kalangan umum di luar klub jika tradisi yang diminati tidak banyak dipelajari oleh anggota lainnya misalnya kelompok studi bologna yang dimulai pada tahun 2024 ada baiknya membeli pedang kedua supaya yakin bahwa akan ada pasangan yang sesuai untuk pedang milik sendiri pedang cadangan seperti ini juga dapat membantu meringankan beban anggota lain yang biasa membawakan pedang tambahan karena cabang gwaith i megyr di bandung belum memiliki gudang peralatan permanen tidak seperti cabang jakarta yang dapat menyimpan peralatan di studio phoenix guild peralatan yang paling penting didapat setelah memiliki senjata latihan tingkat dasar adalah pelindung kepala yang biasanya berbentuk masker anggar jangan lupa membaca panduan belanja di blog gwaith i megyr sebelum membeli masker pribadi dan ada baiknya pula berkonsultasi dengan anggota anggota yang lebih berpengalaman tentang tempat berbelanja yang tepat karena lompatan harga dari pedang kayu ke masker anggar umumnya lumayan jauh sebagai gambaran kasar pada pertengahan tahun 2025 pedang kayu bisa didapatkan dengan harga sekitar rp 200 400 ribu sementara masker anggar baru rata rata dijual dengan harga di atas rp 1 juta dan masker anggar bekas pakai pun jarang dijual di bawah harga rp 600 700 ribu cukup banyak keuntungan memiliki masker anggar pribadi terutama tidak perlu bercampur keringat dengan sesama pengguna masker
