daughter quieted for a few moments before pleading her case of whatever it was she wanted to do aside from hold the wine bottle i wanted to follow up with a remark of wait until she gets old enough to realize just how many rules and policies are kinda dumb and a small number of people ruin the fun for everyone else but i didn t trois target was my next destination i needed toilet paper as i entered the doors and walked towards the escalator an employee with guest services on the back of his vest got on before i did when i stepped on and looked upwards he happened to look downwards at me we made eye contact in a very romeo and juliet balcony scene sort of way he asked me how i was doing no words came out of my mouth for some five seconds because i was very tired and warm i just gazed up at him before finally remarking that when my body temperature gets too high i can t make decisions his response suggested that he knew what i meant i continued with and it s only going to get worse in a general sense he must have thought i meant in the near future because he met my cynicism with it s going to get cooler when we got to the top of the escalator i asked through an exasperated smile do humans being bros way the evening brought about a double feature of two films i d never watched before even though they re iconic cinematic and generational texts i d never had any desire to watch either of these films prior to the last few days an american werewolf in london john landis 1981 was seriously never a consideration until this past weekend why now it was very on sale at barnes noble and was released just a year before the second film of tonight s double feature i got e t the extra terrestrial steven spielberg 1982 on dvd last year but waited this long to put the disc in the player within the first 1 5 years of this human experience two ground breaking films were filmed and distributed theatrically american werewolf was shot in february to march in 1981 and released in august of the same year e t was filmed in september to december in 1981 january and february in 1982 and hit american theatres that june better late than never but i m glad i didn t watch either film at any earlier point in my life i wouldn t have appreciated the humor in the former or been able to handle the creature effects despite having watched nearly all of the hellraiser films when they were rentable at blockbuster and then available for purchase in compiled editions fun fact part of the onscreen text after the ending credits consists of this message lyncanthrope films limited wishes to extend its heartfelt congratulations to lady diana spencer and his royal highness the prince of wales on the occasion of their marriage july 29th 1981 some of the observations i made while watching e t et looks like an old man his fingers and hands are unsettling when his face cannot be seen product placement and intertextuality beyond the reese s pieces there s also a poster of national football tape in the car neighbor on the roof starbuck reappears third white flash of light day 4 mating dinosaurs ewan mcgregor s pivotal moment night 4 testing hypothesis regarding the white light i was so impressed that anne hathaway s purse stayed on through the duration of so much running and crawling it never came off unless it was on purpose for story or character movement i need a new synonym for like that isn t love i don t want to say i loved the end of oak street while watching it in the same way i loved predator badlands but i was so immersed in the viewing experience and wasn t knee jerk second chances 2 replies in the last fifteen or so minutes of union county 2026 written and directed by adam meeks i thought to myself and then wrote in my journal this might be my favorite movie of the year so far aside from the usual justifications like excellent performances by william poulte r and noah centineo as foster brothers who are doing their best to make it through an adult substance abuse recovery program the cinematography courtesy of stefan weinberger the editing by the filmmaker and sean weiner this film achieved that favorite film assessment before the ending credits began because it made me think really think about what can torment and tempt someone without anyone else knowing the wiser because they either hide it well or occupy spaces that you ve never seen i haven t watched many documentaries or longform journalism pieces on drug rehabilitation programs in the us but from the clips and other media i ve come across over the years i imagine it can feel like an exercise in futility particularly if you don t have any friends or family that believe you can get better nevermind the justice system component of such programs union county made me wonder how many people in this country are all too familiar with what cody poulter his foster brother jack centineo and their foster sister katrina emily meade have had to go through at the same time how many people have zero direct or indirect exposure to how these people must live to gain their independence back or to be less bitter towards their addict loved ones cody is the central figure in union county just from the plot itself but the film as a whole gives the viewer an entry point into the routines of getting drug tested going to court finding shelter staying clean from whatever drug the somberness reminds me of omaha which i watched earlier in the spring and liked a lot but didn t want to watch again because it was so sad but with more of a documentary aesthetic onscreen text before the end credits reveals that adam meeks featured actual participants from the 2025 adult recovery program in bellfontaine oh the trailer suggests that noah centineo s character would be the bad influence over william poulter who s supposed to be more sensible and just needs a second chance to atone for probably one stupid decision one of the film s strengths lies in its unvarnished presentation of the two foster brothers they ve both done regrettable things that firstly harm themselves and secondly disappoint others just when jack slides into the bad example narrative function cody slides right alongside him the consequences of their actions aren t exactly slaps on wrists either cody happens to understand the severity of what s at stake has more to account for and is able to fight his opiate addiction possibly on a physiological level more successfully than jack wanting him to succeed comes from a place of human decency instead of mere narrative purpose how many chances does a person get how many mistakes can you make before even well meaning or genuinely sympathetic authority figures have to enforce policies i noticed a couple of obvious product placement fruit loops and gatorade
