it again diabetic ketoacidosis turns your blood acidic and will essentially burn you from the inside out the stories you hear of people dying from rationing this is what happens to their body affordable insulin isn t just a right it s a necessity no one should have to die like that when it s preventable with access to proper medication skweebs the story about the kids waking up from their comas isn t entirely true insulin takes longer to take noticeable effect the kids did all wake from their comas but it was not as immediate as the story claims sustained blood glucose over 250 mg dl is often the point where someone goes into dka though often times your blood glucose will just keep rising if left untreated dka symptoms are not immediately obvious and progress over time but 2 days with out insulin is usually when it starts when i went into dka by the time i got to the er my blood glucose was in the 1200 s and it is not uncommon to see bgs in the 1000 s range in patients in comas i ll be honest and say i m not sure when rapid acting insulin was invented any search comes up with the same 10 articles about the 100 year anniversary no matter what key words i use but even our ultra rapid acting insulin today would take hours for a bg of 1000 to get down to even the 400 s my point being it s an amazing discovery and i d be nothin but bones by now if it had not been for the discovery of insulin but the story that gets touted is a little sensationalized despite being an amazing story to begin with insulin disparity is too common of a tragedy for insulin being a 100 year old medicine the cost of insulin has decreased and i see a lot of people celebrating because it s affordable now it s not let s just use eli lilly s lowest insulin price as an example that s 35 a vial on average one diabetic person uses 2 3 vials per month which would be 105 a month to not die that s still not affordable i m gonna leave you with a fun fact about diabetes because the way the internet talks about diabetes is very solemn and most of the times we re talking about it is focused on how expensive it is and how many of us die every day because of it but its important to remember that we are also living right now we re not just death statistics the first insulin pump and the first continuous glucose monitor were invented on the same day because they were actually the same machine it was invented in 1974 and was named the biostator and was 132 pounds later from 1978 1988 smaller and more portable insulin pumps were made here is a picture of the biostator alt here are
