navigation older posts echo posted on april 4 2026 by tomomi mcelwee the biannual national exhibition of the irish patchwork society is open at the national botanic gardens in dublin the theme this year is echo and we had to have something sapphire since it s the 45th anniversary i learnt the word echo as a child was as a sound phenomenon we shout at the top of a mountain and an echo comes back it was a highlight of school hiking simple innocent time since then i learned various concepts of echo another thing we learned was that sound is a wave which can be visualised a sound wave goes one way and bounces back and they collide is my idea for this quilt first to make two sound waves and they have to be mirror images no actual photo of them so here is an image i cut them up on the left and put them together on the right there was a bit of adjustment so the blue lines look continuous what would you quilt to express echo rather than staying in echo i extended the idea to reflection what i want to reflect in my quilts there are birds fish butterflies and other things i like to quilt the backing is made up of fabrics i dyed a long time ago with leaves and nuts it s 20 by 30 the
