for the lens artists photo challenge some of you may have noticed that i haven t done much in the way of posting recently the reason being that we have been working hard preparing for an estate sale when my mother in law passed away in july she left a house full of possessions that were neither valuable nor particularly desirable but when the family gathered at the old place this past weekend we realized that so many of those things on display held a great deal of sentimental value and when turnout for the sale proved to be disappointing probably due to the timing being so near to christmas we found ourselves leaving with arms full of memorabilia we found the sled probably dating back to the late 1960 s in the crawl space under the house it brought back memories of our first winter in chicago when my husband would pull our eldest daughter up and down the sidewalk in the snow with my mother in law s dog chasing along beside them cana island posted by sue mac s girl on november 11 2014 posted in life miscellaneous nature photography travel uncategorized tagged lighthouses water wisconsin 7 comments cana island slightly north of baileys harbor in door county wisconsin is connected to the mainland by a long stony causeway on the day that we visited the weather was distinctly threatening and it wouldn t have taken much i imagined for the waters of lake michigan to completely cover our only means of egress from this lonely little spot we had arrived rather late in the afternoon and the wind was whipping the waves towards the shore as we trudged across in order to see cana s one claim to fame the cana island light which first saw service as a lighthouse in 1870 in 1880 it faced the ferocious alpena gale when the lower level was completely flooded forcing the occupants to climb to higher ground despite the island s warning light seven ships were lost near cana during this storm including the 654 ton steamer alpena with considerable loss of life although the lighthouse itself turned out to be a bit of a disappointment it was undergoing repairs and much of it was fenced off the weather and lighting conditions instead of working against us imbued the little 8 7 acre island with a certain atmospheric quality that was quite intriguing several of these mini cairns lined the causeway left by previous visitors to the island probably in a light hearted moment but just then they seemed like a cry from the past a warning or a sad reminder originally the 89ft tall cana light was perched on a somewhat larger pile of rocks but in 1900 crews working with eight teams of horses and wagons hauled in tons of top soil to eventually provide a grassed over area around the lighthouse a word a week photograph challenge spray posted by sue mac s girl on october known better than to start a spray fight she was quickly outnumbered and soon went down to defeat littlest grandson giving the flowers a helping hand at the chicago botanic garden children enjoying the spray from the crown fountain in chicago s millennium park opponents and onlookers alike got well and truly sprayed during this fun game at the arlington heights frontier days festival a few years theme distance is distance i don t very often get out into the wide open spaces so i had to search long and hard for pictures that i thought illustrated distance adequately of course i ve got plenty of shots taken from the top of sears tower the gateway arch in st louis and other tall buildings but the distance always looks more hazy and less appealing than those taken somewhere like south dakota sense that i don t regularly attend shows meetings or gatherings but occasionally i m drawn by the color and shine of these vintage models and can t resist getting a shot or two these photos were taken at volo auto museum in volo illinois and a show in long grove illinois volo is a great place to see famous movie and tv cars as well as all kinds of classic vehicles from military to muscle the museum is open 7 days a week from 10am to 5pm and hosts many special events throughout the year including cruise ins concerts and festivals i believe they have something called a haunted trolley tour this september and october many towns in the chicago area host cruise nights and from what i understand these events are quite popular speaking of curves it would be remiss of me if i did not include from me to make comments of that nature on here these pictures were taken back in 2011 we d visited mount rushmore several years earlier and had almost decided not to return for a second look during our latest trip to south dakota i m glad now that we changed our minds as we got a much closer view of this awesome monument a whole new angle in fact compared to my original shots posts navigation
