precioussteveharrington follow despite talking shit about people who did theater in school steve actually did drama in middle school for a short time he didn t know not to care about how things affected you socially he hadn t even discovered that throwing parties made you popular yet back then he was merely trying his damnedest to pass his classes while third wheeling tommy and carol and playing some sports in his free time in his first year in middle school he had signed up for drama and got a leading role in their first production of the year while learning his part he received amazing feedback from his teacher and classmates he showed great promise and on opening night his heart raced and his stomach fluttered at the thunderous applause after his big scene but when everyone went to greet their families and friends at the stage doors steve realized no one he had invited all four had come to see him in the play on his walk home he decided to drop drama the following monday and take an extra gym class eddie a new student at the time still remembers seeing the play for his new friend freak who had been cast in a bit role as some sort of poorly constructed animal he remembers a brunette boy who recited a heartbreaking monologue under spotlight while choking back tears and the well deserved cheers from the audience by the time he finally got backstage to congratulate him on a job well done he was no where to be found so he went with freak and his family for burgers and forgot all about him luckily a slot had opened up in the drama course in the dramatic monologue he did it better than i ever could like he had tears in his eyes i think i teared up a little he chuckles and i just i couldn t hate him couldn t hate the play because i understood suddenly why he d been cast and i hadn t he runs his thumb over steve s knuckles again it s weird though because i never saw him after that in fact i think i took his place because that next week there was an opening and he was gone were you there he looks over at steve and freezes at the tears in his eyes baby you you liked it if you were there you would ve understood why i wish i d gotten a copy of it somehow steve sniffs wipes his eyes y know mrs anderson keeps everything i bet she s got one probably but we re not talking about that right now he squeezes steve s hand what s wrong steve laughs wetly and shakes his head that s the thing nothing s wrong he takes a breath when i was in sixth grade i joined the drama club for three months eddie gasps most of it was to practice with half a week to perform i finished walked off stage and went to the area where all the parents were and everyone the cast had invited he sniffs again i invited my parents tommy and carol and no one came no one bothered to come to even pretend like what s important to me was important to them he shakes his head i left pretty immediately told the teacher i didn t want to do it anymore i went back there eddie whispers after the show i wanted to find you and talk to you but you d already left he cups steve s jaw sweetheart oh steve whispers you really were made for me weren t you eddie leans in
