there was no way i was missing it friday of rocky mountain mustang roundup weekend is traditionally the day of the autocross and it was no different in the 23rd year a few of the chamber staff and i headed down to the autocross to see what kind of course these american made beasts were going to be running that day once we signed our lives away we had to just sit on the sidelines and wait for our turn while the momentum built with 150 drivers completing three timed runs you can bet there wasn t a lot of break in the action so when they said it was my turn they didn t have to tell me twice i grabbed a helmet and jumped in the roaring stage 3 roush ready to take on the elaborately designed track i gave a quick smile and thumbs up to the girls just in time to hear the squeal of the tires as we shot out onto the track in what reminded me of an unpredictable carnival ride we zigged and zagged around the track in what felt like going from 0 to 60 in nothing flat over and over again my body was shifting quickly from one side of the seat to the other around every turn when we made the final corner and fishtailed our way to the finish line the whole thing couldn t have been more than 45 seconds whoa i thought to myself i ll definitely be back to do this again next year hey maybe they ll let me drive this time don t forget to check out the show n shine on saturday when all the their life in the lap pool at the old town hot springs the bi annual poochy paddle is quickly turning into a soggy steamboat springs tradition every dog in town is invited to the lap pool at oths for a dip in the warm waters before the pool is drained and cleaned there s a lot of jumping chasing and shaking tennis balls are flying and kids are coaxing their pooch into the waters some even attempt a running jump off the diving board each dog gets in for a small fee and a donation of dog food for the steamboat springs animal shelter plenty of owners are lined up poolside doing their best to avoid a big doggy shake but everyone inevitably gets wet but no one seems to mind this year s poochy paddles are scheduled for sunday april 22 and sept 23 tickets will be available in advance at the a lot of runners they have those races that they run every year no matter what for me i ve made this race a yearly tradition that finds me at year 15 this race has served many different roles it was my first half marathon years ago and acts as a yearly warm up to the trail running seaso n it also was a return to racing after injuries and was a race to celebrate my mother after she passed away it has been a good motivation to run through snowy springs and was a celebration of our son as i ran pregnant last year the race typically starts under a gorgeous blue sky although it once saw snow in june above all it is a chance to celebrate a beautiful town and the yampa valley by running with friends some avid runners and some that make this their first or only race of the year whether starting the full marathon in the cool mountain air at hahn s peak or taking on the half marathon you run past fields of green grass spring wildflowers the elk river and horse filled pastures this reminds runners why its one of the prettiest road marathons in the state i love it when you run towards the finish downtown with the snow covered ski area as the backdrop it doesn t matter whether they are the last 10k runners or the fastest marathoners everyone finishes at the same place everyone has accomplished something and everyone is treated to streets lines with cheering supporters i am looking pipe at his first world cup in france last winter the 17 year old steamboat springs high school junior is also a past usasa skicross national champion and represented the united states at the world junior championships in new zeala nd when i moved to steamboat springs i was in 3 rd grade and anxious to ski all of the time when february rolled around everyone at school was talking about winter carnival and the horses and the jumps i wasn t sure what it was but i asked my mom to sign me up for everything which she did photo vastaction on race day we showed up downtown and found the street closed it was full of snow and many steaming horses with cowboys perched in the saddle thousands of people lined the streets to watch what the kids were doing i quickly figured out that i was going to be one of those kids i waited for my turn and moved up the line before i knew it a cowboy came up on a horse and asked me how fast i wanted to go i said full speed i grabbed hold of the rope and was soon flying down lincoln avenue snow flying in my face hanging on for dear life as we came up to f m light i saw the donkey jump in the middle of the street perfect i loved jumps and still do i hit the jump as hard and fast as i could and twisted around in a trick that thrilled the crowd they went crazy as i flew through the air and stuck my landing the next morning i was on the front page of the day enjoying steamboat as a family then celebrate with friends we like to sleep in a little in years they open the top of the mountain i will get up early since those can be some of the best powder days of the year then we get up and head for the mountain to make some turns together stop by slopeside fit in another sport if possible then head back to prepare dinner we share some food and wine the kids play and make plans for another great year time with friends who are like family is the highlight of the holiday for us it is not hard to be thankful since we are blessed with a great food line was always full of the next hungry man woman or child the constant ask for what can i help with never seemed to run out either the extent of work and preparation that goes into a community dinner astounded and humbled me i found the true meaning of community that day here s to all you people in this community that make this happen from the guests to the cooks to the much needed cleaner family for thanksgiving dinner in addition to a few extras this year in particular we will have a larger group with our son bringing home some college friends with our ever evolving group we prep the meal the night before so there is not much to do on thanksgiving day we also make sure everyone brings something to add to the meal that something has to be enough to not only feed the group on thanksgiving but it has to be enough to send leftovers home with everyone leftovers are a very important part of thanksgiving after all dinner is planned for no earlier than 5 or 6pm we ve got to get some runs on the mountain in in fact we purchased an oven that has a setting for turkey when the turkey is done the oven turns off that way we can stay on the mountain a bit longer if we want and the turkey is always ready no matter how many turns we take thanksgiving in steamboat is a very special day for my family and friends we get to do what we love and be with the ones we love i couldn t ask
