of rough draft posts this one 10 years old jan 17 2013 struck a nerve it remains relevant and inspiring so let s i find myself in a nearly constant state of transition moving from one location experience adventure to the next on the one hand i love it on the other i am often at the edge of my comfort zone sometimes i cringe and consider staying in one place foregoing the trek into the unknown but my curiosity and desire to see new places always wins out i find that moving on is much like stepping off the platform to speed across a zip line ziplining is a rare opportunity in my life and something i would consider a frivolous expense in most situations i have only taken the opportunity twice once with my teenaged kids in mexico on an adventure excursion that combined ziplines with rappelling kayaking biking and hiking in the yucatan and the most recent opportunity a 10 section zipline combined with an aerial tram in the rainforest of costa rica on this occasion we were advised on the most efficient body positions to achieve adequate speed and distance in the longest sections the cannonball was the most aerodynamic cross your feet and curl your knees up an optional position was the starfish and and legs splayed and head back reveling in the free fall we were cautioned that should we choose to try the starfish we may slow our speed to the point that reaching the next platform would require some manual pulling of the cables for the last few feet to prevent us from coasting back out to the middle of the section some people could hardly be coaxed to recline at all rigidly upright and curled up protectively as they sped across each expanse they barely dared to look beyond their own fists clenched around the safety clips others enjoyed the ride like a racetrack seeing how quickly they could speed from point to point the cables screamed shrilly as they whizzed along i looked forward to launching myself off each platform then forced myself to open my arms and legs and lean back to bask in the moment i would scream enthusiastically and spin to take in the scenery from all angles i am a starfish i suspect that these preferences reveal much about how each of us approach the passages throughout our lives in general as we approach the next adventure the next stage do we tense race into it determinedly or do we open ourselves to the newness and take in the moment even if it means a bit more struggle to finish the transition this experience has me looking at my approach to new experiences in a different light when i feel that twinge of apprehension i carol l 3 freshly back from a 10 day holiday eastern caribbean cruise it was a wonderful escape full of new places with warm weather snorkling rain forests and decadent foods we took masks which we used less frequently as the vacation wore on and still managed to escape the threat of communicable diseases yay the rest of our family spread across the country and especially those harboring children suffered through bouts of the flu that they swore were shared across the miles by text we did not miss that generosity this was our second cruise of the year with another planned in may i ll write more about our recent adventures in future posts since our travel hasn t stopped these past few years perhaps it is time to come out of quarantine and reactivate this blog where have you traveled lately what future adventures are you looking forward to our next adventure will take us to molokai posted in travel great basin appreciation september 13 2017 by carol l 1 added a new national park to our list of those we have visited this week whole returning home from olympic village at lake tahoe we chose the route along the loneliest highway through nevada we have driven past the entrance to the great basin national park but have never ventured in to learn about it or explore this time we did after spending the night in ely it was a short drive of about 30 miles to the park entrance this park is a celebration of a much larger area than what it protects the great basin is a large area of land in the western us where geologic processes have pulled apart mountainous terrain to leave broad swaths of sunken valleys between ranges of rocky peaks largely undeveloped this land appears to be a sweeping emptiness summers are blistering and winters are brutal although technically on the western side of the continental divide the watershed from this area never reaches any ocean it collects in lakes and ponds throughout the basin and was once largely collected into an ancient lake known as lake bonneville it is believed that there was once an historic breach of the retaining rock on the northern edge of this huge lake that sent a destructive flood of canyon carving water gouging out what are now known as the snake and columbia river gorges the great salt lake is the most prominent remnant of lake bonneville within the boundary of this small national park lie representations of the surprising diversity to be found in this area of the us mt wheeler is the tallest mountain of the range and a steep paved 12 mile road will take you up its flanks a rise of over 3000 vertical feet through a range of life zones at the base of this mountain lies the entrance to a spectacular system of limestone caves revealing another side to the treasures sought below ground throughout this region as always a first stop at a national park is just the appetizer we look forward to future visits with more time to explore and what we learned today gives us a new appreciation for the vast area of landscape that we now know to be the actual great basin of the united states 90 of this area is public land and the towns along the loneliest highway have hardly
