s related to sarah young by the way jo shrugged caleb and sarah were really kind to me you knew him before he was bishop then i met him when he was rector of st thomas i was working at the sally ann then as an intake worker not long after that i started attending st thomas you d have had a lot of exposure to our ceremonies and customs then yes he nodded good to know never hurts when the anglican priest knows the difference between a sweat and a smudge she raised an eyebrow i have to admit i ve never been to a sweat but i ve been smudged more times than i can count that s good sorry if i m coming across as pushy but you know the anglican church hasn t exactly covered itself with glory in the eyes of our people jo looked from james to shauna her face open and vulnerable i ve read the stories and reports she said softly i know the anglican church has a lot to answer for but for me the learning curve s been even more complicated my family was nominally anglican but my parents never attended and when i became a christian it was in a nondenominational setting until i met caleb and started attending st thomas i d had absolutely no contact with anglican christianity i studied the story in seminary of course but that s not the same as being personally involved in it for decades at the parish level i guess what i m saying is it s not just the residential school story i need to learn more about james nodded i understand and like i said i didn t mean to get pushy it s just that with you being friendly with caleb and sarah we were hoping that meant you d be more positive toward indigenous people than your predecessor jo frowned was thomas i wouldn t say he was personally racist but the issues weren t important to him he didn t give any leadership on it in the church community he couldn t be bothered to go down to the truth and reconciliation hearings in saskatoon for instance speaking of thomas my dad said did the mounties ever find out who took a shot at him last year jo frowned and then i saw the light dawning on her face is that why there s a bullet hole in my kitchen wall haven t they fixed that yet i asked no and no one told me the story of how it got my dad asked we know you have another service today i ll need to run back into town pick up my robes and stuff and be at rochdale by about six thirty so i ve got lots of time that s great said my mom we re really happy to have you here thank you jo replied softly on tuesday evening jo and i walked our dogs again and when we got back to my place i invited her in for a cup of decaf coffee it had been a cooler day it was after all the last day of september and while the kettle was heating up in the kitchen i glanced at her and said i have a fireplace in the living room i could light a little fire if you like it ll only take me five minutes she grinned at me you mean i m finally going to get invited into the inner sanctum i guess you haven t been in my living room yet have you no just the deck and the kitchen come and have a look i led her through into the living room the floor was hardwood partially covered by a large area rug the stone fireplace and hearth were on the north wall the front window was on the east wall and on the south wall i had two crammed bookshelves stretching up almost to the ceiling there was a small tv in one corner and a cd player with a huge stack of cds beside it a couch a couple of armchairs and some end tables completed the furniture this is very cosy she said i especially like the bookshelves thanks there s a few more in other parts of the house i ll just get this fire going feel free to browse i will i began to lay out the fire and after a moment she said you really like history don t you especially canadian history i do a lot of indigenous stuff too i see i have to keep up with james you know she laughed softly he s a force of nature isn t he yeah but also a good friend and i ve appreciated most of the books he s recommended to me i see what i think are some mennonite names here wiebe toews augsburger hershberger yoder have you read any mennonite theology and spirituality not really help yourself if you re interested or to anything grandparents still alive three out of four dad s parents are isaac and anna hiebert he s eighty four and she s eighty three they have their own place in town here but they re getting frail and they re needing more and more help these days mom s dad died a few years ago but her mom rachel wiebe is almost eighty she s a real live wire that one she has a little place in the seniors housing circle have you come across the circle yet yeah i have a couple of parishioners living there of course you do anyway i ll introduce you to my grandparents if you like what about you do you have grandparents still alive she shook her head no i m the youngest child so my parents are maybe ten years older than yours they re in their mid sixties right your dad is lovely yeah mom normally is too sorry she was so pushy on sunday i get it the last girl you brought around didn t work out so well and even though we re not dating she can t help being protective she s a mom and speaking of girlfriends carly s a sweetheart isn t she yeah she and joel are a really good fit for each other james and shauna were fun i m glad you think so i love james like a brother but he can be a little intense sometimes he s a campaigner and the thing about campaigners is they re willing to incur some casualties if they think the cause is important enough which is kind of tough if you happen to be one of the casualties i get it though luke this campaign is important but of course i ve already discovered that not everyone in my churches sees it the same way and i have to take my parishioners as they are and love them anyway yeah our pastors have sometimes been a little impatient about that at your mennonite church you mean yes last year we had a congregational discussion about including a land acknowledgement at the beginning of our services pastor dan thought it would be a good idea but he was pretty naïve about it i thought it was a good idea too but mennonites can be surprisingly conservative about these things it s like they feel the land is the refuge their parents and grandparents found after being persecuted in russia to acknowledge that someone else had a prior claim on it is to admit that their sanctuary was someone else s loss and for some people that s a big ask anyway it went through but we lost some people over it and i think if dan had been a little more patient and had taken time to talk with people one on one the outcome might have been better right caleb told me to be careful about assuming i was the leader just because i m the rector in rural churches the actual leadership structure is often different from the official leadership structure yes it is the day may come when they decide to make you the leader but they don t know you well enough yet and you can t rush that process meanwhile art and bruce are the historic leaders at st andrew s and the younger crowd tend to look to nicky and marcus and scott douglas lisa s husband good to know she gave me a mischievous grin so you re kind of related to the emerging leadership in my church then i guess i am since marcus is like a brother to me and i m daisy s godfather marcus and james are your closest friends aren t they yeah dad calls us the three amigos which is a little lame but he means well what about you do you have close friends from your childhood she shook her head none that i ve kept from my childhood my oldest and closest and absolute best friend is hannah macneill we met twelve years ago when we started as psychology students at the u of t she s from saskatoon originally and when i moved to saskatoon after i graduated i lived in her parents basement for a while she was actually the one who introduced me to the community where i found my faith a church community you mean no it was more like a community house an intentional community for serving the poor there were some permanent residents and then some space available for homeless people the guy that ran it was eddie ford he was in his fifties at the time he was a street worker i guess kind of like a pastor for street people then there were a couple of students who stayed there mark thorne and grace haddad they were two or three years older than me i became really good friends with them they were my first christian mentors along with eddie and hannah that s where you get your love of justice and caring for the poor and all that i hope so anyway hannah has her own clinical psychology practice in saskatoon now and we see each other a lot you talk about james and marcus being like brothers to you hannah s like a sister to me and then there s amy cameron she and i were in seminary together and we shared a really shabby basement apartment we re really close and because of that she and hannah have become close friends too nice so you re part of a three amigos group as well i guess i am i stay in touch with other seminary friends too but i m not really close to them and i m also close to caleb s kids especially nathan and his wife tina does amy still live in saskatoon no she s in borden with two other smaller communities to look after too like me not too far though if you want to have a three amigos get together it s doable yeah i smiled at her maybe in a year or two you ll make some close friends in westbury too she hesitated it s complicated in the parish you and i are fine because you re not one of my parishioners it s not that clergy can t have friends in their congregations of course they can but the dynamic s a little different when one of the friends also has pastoral responsibilities toward the other one you know what i mean it s not a totally equal relationship or at least it s hard to make it totally equal but are any friendships totally equal she shrugged probably not but i think you know what i mean yeah i do and i m glad i m in the clear because i think we re becoming friends and i like it she nodded so do i luke she said quietly so do i the far side of the bridge chapter 4 june 8 2026 some of my friends will be aware that over the past few months i ve been working on a new novel one that for the first time is entirely unconnected with the story line that gave birth to the road to meadowvale and the three books that followed it it s going to be a while before this book is finished but i thought i d give you folks a taste of the first few chapters this is chapter four oh and by the way i should make the usual disclaimer which is that the people in this story are fictitious and none of them are meant to represent any person in the real world alive or dead that s not to say that some of them don t have similarities to people i ve known authors are lazy that way making up people from scratch is too much like hard work but for the most part these people are still fictitious especially the clergy it s important that you know that for instance the anglican diocese of saskatoon has had an indigenous bishop but my bishop caleb isn t meant to be him most of the churches mentioned in this story are also totally fictitious one more thing this story alternates between two narrators luke and jo usually you ll find out who is speaking by looking for their name in the chapter heading very occasionally there s a switch mid chapter chapter 4 jo august 12 15 2014 art holloway dropped into the church office tuesday morning about eleven o clock i d been doing some advance work for my next sermon and had just gone down to the basement to make myself a cup of coffee i had finn with me and i had just started the coffee brewing when i heard the front door open and close again upstairs finn let out a couple of sharp barks and i heard art s call hello are you down there jo right here art i just put the coffee on you got a dog with you down there yeah but he s well trained i heard his footsteps coming down and a moment later he appeared at the foot of the stairs a short dumpy figure in jeans and a short sleeved shirt with an old rough riders cap set at a jaunty angle on his head well a border collie he said with a grin finn gave a low growl and i spoke sharply to him finn easy lie down the dog hesitated then sank slowly down on his belly keeping a watchful eye on art you got him well trained alright art observed he s a rescue dog i ve had him for about a year he can t have been very old when you got him no the litter was abandoned by the side of the road he shook his head horrible what people do to dogs sometimes yeah he s a beauty all right but i ll just leave him be and let him decide when he wants to make friends with me i nodded you sound like you know dogs art we always had them when i was growing up course they were working dogs on the farm my parents never had any pets i always liked them though and so did carol so after we
