teenagers in york pa built in 1912 the shady dell was a private residence until 1945 when new owners john helen ettline opened it to the public initially as a bakery and ice cream parlor in the early 1950s the dell evolved into a full service restaurant and dance hall home away from home for thousands of young people across central pa it was here in this hallowed hall the barn dance hall that tom misspent his youth from 1965 to 1971 at the dell the handwriting was on the wall literally disapproving parents teachers cops clergy and self appointed guardians of our morals branded the dell a den of iniquity false rumors circulated that the dell was a safe haven for juvenile delinquents and criminal activity teens who frequented the juke joint were called dell rats we eagerly embraced the label debbie the dellette stop flirting pam that s my dad dell owners john and helen ettline let kids be kids they earned our respect by allowing us to have fun and blow off steam without strict supervision helen s song now meet our jovial emcee the host with the most a dell rat s answer to the nutty professor a legend in his own mind shady del knight aka shady seaweed the oldest living and here s our dear old friend margaret schneider child of the dell whose father built the shady dell and moved his family into the house in 1913 when margaret was only a year old blessed with a very long life that spanned 105 years margaret elizabeth brown schneider was nicknamed the oldest living dell rat now here s dell rat jerre jerre slaybaugh who was a shady dell regular from the late 1950s thru mid 60s jerre is a great friend who has followed and supported both of my dell blogs from day one in the summer of 2008 known as the doo wop authority jerre has shared many stories and playlists that have helped fill in the blanks letting us know which songs were most popular in the barn the dell dance hall and how dell rats dressed in the years he attended lesley gore special dedication song from jim to nancy now meet jim nancy sieling great friends of the dell ever since 2008 when my first blog began publishing jim nancy have contributed priceless dell related memorabilia photos stories
