alternative is a tyrannical colonialist empire whose army is doing extrajudicial executions what does that say about you by your own logic astral logistics assn extrajudicial executions you get a bounty letter from the local innkeeper 100 gold to kill the leader of a nearby bandit camp payable by the jarl s steward the 100 gold is nothing you can make that chopping wood for an hour or two the draw here is looting rights you are of course going to kill everybody there just to get to your target you are of course going to schlepp all their armor weapons gold household goods whatever back to town to sell the extra gold from the jarl is just bonus you start the civil war questline by killing every single bandit in a specific fort so your side s troops can take it over you ve likely had lots of practice at this it s the basic gameplay loop go somewhere kill everyone there take all their stuff back to town and sell it those people in that fort cave ruin wherever got kicked out of the civilized towns either for bullshit bounties or often simply because there s not enough food shelter or work for everyone in the towns they don t just do highway robbery mostly there s mines there s hunting fishing most every dungeon has some kind of smithing setup alchemy enchanting most of them have more books per capita than the farmers and shopkeepers in the towns they re not ignorant savages there s an entire economy there or at least there would be if the jarls didn t keep sending mercenaries to wipe them out what i m saying is nobody who participates in this system gets to take the moral high ground all you motherfuckers got blood on your hands 90 of aaa vidya is like this and if you try to make a game where you can t kill everything where everything isn t trying to kill you where combat isn t front and center all the people who ve grown up with games like these will scream bloody murder well put reconciling genre conventional game mechanics with the attempt to make the world and characters feel alive is always bound to result in some bizarre tonal dissonance there s no point acting like your choices in a damn video game say anything about your morals when we re all killing bandits and i don t think that makes a game bad i love skyrim but it s a definite quirk of the medium and a very interesting topic hell even stardew valley has the same problem by letting you want but if it makes you hype up the imperials then yeah i am gonna throw a bit of a side eye your way also ulfric is one of the most interesting parts of the entire game and the way people boil him down and dismiss him pisses me off so bad not because i think he s a great noble warrior but because skyrim has so little to work with when it comes to interesting characters he has one of the biggest pools of lore of any skyrim character he s actually complex and for god s sake he s not even doing that bad of a job leading he s harboring two groups of refugees one of which are fleeing from the
