at chale island which is just south of diani beach one of my favourite places in kenya chale island is actually a headland 600 meters off the mainland with 15 acres of indigenous forest known as a sacred worship place kaya and boasts an inland tidal mangrove lake the island is just four degrees south of the equator and is 1 2 km long and 0 8 km wide so perfect for a romantic getaway with very few other holidaymakers leaving ample space for everyone to share in the white sandy beach and bay the sunrises were spectacular twice we walked the circumference of the island and we were blown away by the magnificence of how the terrain changes from one side to the other and how wonderfully abundant it is was with crabs lizards beautifully coloured fish shells birdlife monkeys and baboons we were also spoiled with getting very close to colobus monkeys and their babies the morning of our departure was met with elation when we saw a turtle laying her eggs a truly once in a lifetime explain the energy and diversity of london to someone who has not been there maybe its just the country bumpkin in me who is not accustomed to big bustling cities anymore but london is alive with an electric pulsating modern energy all the while being surrounded by the respect of ancient splendor and not to forget royalty having visited london previously it was easier to navigate and get around by myself with the help of modern applications while pete was working and was grateful to have the time to practice my photography skills i reckon you could visit the uk every other week for years and not see the same thing twice however there were people similarities i noticed from this and previous trips commuters are seemingly always running late as they rush around at a frantic pace not making eye contact or acknowledging anyone else as they are too busy being absorbed by the mobile phones and how many extremely young girls are pushing babies around in prams almost as if its a fashion statement and it seems the order of the day is wearing ripped sometimes barely there denims or plastic pleather pants and as much makeup as possible with dolled up hairdo s however very ill kept nails we walked as much as possible averaging around 20 000 steps a day which was surprisingly easy and enjoyable we would have missed so much had we traveled by tube and where possible took buses versus the underground to take in all the glorious scenery when it was just too far to walk my favourite of all in the uk are the parks i could make a trip of park visiting alone they are all magnificent and on july 9 2018 by thecompletebook 16 i was lucky enough to be a small part as photographer for a very worthy cause this past saturday ex marine peter moore who suffers from severe copd chronic obstructive pulmonary disease completed his 7 7 7 swim peter wanted to do the swim in support of a fellow double lung transplant candidate and to raise awareness on the importance of organ donation one organ donor can save 7 lives and to keep with the theme of 7 peter decided to do the swim on the 7 th day of the 7 th month what an amazing self set challenge especially seeing as peter only has been 18 and 24 lung function not to mention the water this time of year is icy cold moments before entering the icy water years ago peter ran into a room to close a chlorine gas cylinder which was accidentally opened so children in the area could be evacuated before suffering any ill effects from the leak thankfully none of the children were effected but unfortunately peter suffered burns to his lungs after inhaling the chlorine gas as he wasn t able to hold his breath long enough before leaving the gas filled area sadly due to peters copd he was boarded so relies on government medical care having such low lung function being inactive dependent on daily oxygen and being on copious amounts of medication escalated peters weight which meant he did not qualify to be on the transplant list a loving daughter applying some sunscreen fast forward a few years and with relentless dedication and lots of hard work peter lost the weight and became the first oxygen dependent person in the world to complete an open water swimming event what an achievement that sundays river mile swim planted the seed for his 7 7 7 swim doing well in the freezing water saturday turned out to be a beautiful sunshiny day but sadly nothing could warm the icy waters peter said the water was so cold it made his body ache and for the first part of the swim his heart rate was extremely high making it even more difficult to breathe soon enough he had his heart rate under control but then the cramps set in not deterred peter kept a smile on his face with his end goal in mind 4 hours and 15 minutes later peter achieved his goal of 7km what a hero what a hero next step is a trip to cape towns groote schuur hospital for tests with the hopes of peter being put onto the transplant list i am sure
