gns the shop thought this one would work though because it s so light they were right and i m happy with how it printed up our pants are patterns for pirates momma bear joggers me love notions thomas track pants daddy and ellie and mac kids joggers for both kids from there everyone chose a flavor raspberry creek won again for every color solid i needed down to the last rainbow sprinkle my husband chose green mint chip and triblend ended up being the perfect color match i added appliqué chips in black all over for my chocolate with peanut butter sauce i chose sinclair patterns marley because of the colorblocked top half of the appliqué was done for me i added drips to the bottom pieces and sleeves for my look eric chose blueberry ice cream i thought and thought what i could add to a plain blue shirt to make it more exciting but sometimes simple wins out plus an added bonus that he ll have a blue shirt to wear again i did add a hat with small green leaves on the top to fully turn him into a blueberry for both kids hats i shortened the patterns for pirates slouchie beanie and added the leaves or stems then we have lena and the mountain of appliqué her choice of vanilla with rainbow sprinkles entailed yes i cut each one out by hand and sewed each one on thankfully it didn t take me nearly as long as i expected i think i used seven different thread colors as well she loves it she says her favorite part is her cherry hat i added pipe cleaners to the stem so it would stand up and would be pose able it s the cherry on top of the whole group of course our halloween weather is unpredictable i planned nice warm toasty costumes that we could layer underneath if need be sometimes we even get snow on halloween it figures that highs today are mid 70 s and we think it might break we are at it again three years ago lena started school now here we are and eric has started pre k the family got together for another collaboration to send him off in style we followed the same process as before eric wrote his name papa digitized it grandma stitched it and i sewed it check out how it went just like lena s shirt we used a paper print from raspberry creek fabrics i thought it was the same one until i looked back at the photos this one mom got on her trip to the shop in utah a few years ago i decided to go with the seafoam solid for the neckband the pattern is the sawyer shirt by annalaine patterns i believe this company has gone out of business but i love the fit it s definitely a staple pattern for me step one eric writes his name he is very proud of being able to do this and often runs around spelling it out e r i c i had him use pencil then i traced over it in marker this is so the lines will show up clearly when papa digitizes the design step two papa takes eric s name and turns it into an embroidery pattern this isn t an exact science and i helped out with this part some this time he took a photo with his phone then we uploaded the photo into the embroidery software my best tip for a design like this is to limit your colors to two then you won t get any background shadows from the photo showing up in the final design here s how it looked when we were ready to go you might notice this is a different r from the photo of eric holding his name i had him write it twice and we combined his best letters from each to get this design the r is from one writing and the other three letters are from the second we took a lesson from lena s shirt and measured eric this time we decided how big of an area we wanted his name to take up on the front of his shirt then made the design that size in the software after saving it to a flashdrive it was ready for grandma grandma preps the fabric for embroidery once all was prepared eric helped grandma do the stitching his job is to hit green go the button to start the machine since it s one color and a few lines this was a pretty quick one for them to stitch up i love how i caught both of them doing this job with grandma they had such fun helping create their name shirt once the stitching was done it was up to me to sew i centered the name as i would a panel on the shirt front piece fussy cut that then cut and sewed the rest of the shirt as normal this pattern is a fairly quick one to sew up here s the end result he loves that his shirt has his name written by him just like lena did we re now in the second week of school and he is having a blast eric has the same teacher that lena did he wore this one of the days last week and she noticed right away saying he s got one too there were lots of smiles from everyone creating this i love being able to send eric to school in something that he can feel proud having been a part of as well something as simple as writing your name can lead your costume sewing adventures going so far i ended up quite a bit ahead for once this year no costume plans were too big or time constraints too small we shopped for fabrics in august and i sewed most of the pieces during august and september we ve actually had the opportunity to wear our super fun costumes a few different events a trunk or treat at lena s school a few halloween parties with friends and of course the main event is coming up in just a few days paw patrol will be on a roll halloween night peek a boo pattern shop ultimate costume creator as it seems to happen with most of the costumes i ve made there are a lot of different patterns and fabrics at play let s start with the basis of the whole family plan the pups i used peek a boo pattern shop s ultimate costume creator as the base pattern for my daughter s skye and my son s marshall costumes fabric for both of these came from joann s two colors of fleece and fur for skye and the dalmation spots for marshall and raspberry creek fabrics solid pinks and yellow red i made just a few hacks for each pup for skye i made the costume as is from fleece adding just a little colorblocking to the end of each arm and leg once that was done i added skye s goggles to the top of the hood i appliqued circles of white knit on top then sewed and stuffed some fabric tubes for the eyepiece of the goggles the goggle straps are simply strips of fabric sewn on at the top near the eyepieces and left loose further down skye s pink vest is a separate garment boo and lu patterns powell made oversized and a little shortened to fit over top of the costume i made the neckband a lighter pink for skye s collar she s ready to fly showing off their favorite part the tails for marshall i took a different approach for the pup vest the dalmation fabric we found is pretty lightweight i decided to colorblock the red vest as part of the costume both to give the lighter spotty fabric a firmer base and to make the whole thing easier for eric to put on the yellow collar part is also colorblocked in since there wouldn t be a separate neckband piece with the hood attached we got him a marshall hat to wear to complete his outfit that pup is fired up for both pups i used the puppy ears included in the pattern i did however make them a little bit longer and attached them so they d point down like the pups ears do in the show we spiked daddy s hair like ryder s it worked sort of we wouldn t be the paw patrol without their leader ryder for ben s costume i used the sawyer shirt by annalaine patterns this pattern has a straight colorblock included but i changed the position so it would sit higher like ryder s vest jacket i added yellow piping in between and blue piping at the sleeve seam also in retrospect i should have made the sleeve piping a little wider but it still works out i sewed on fake welt pockets and for the finishing touch appliqued on ryder s pup tag i m really proud of how that turned out in particular to achieve it i projected an image of the tag on to each color of fabric and traced it on i used heat n bond on each piece cut them out and fused them all together before sewing the whole thing on to the shirt all the solids for this shirt are from raspberry creek fabrics for my mayor goodway costume i used a mix of ready to wear and me made i got enough of the pink fabric i used for skye to make a shirt before i realized i already had one so my shirt is a ready to wear one my blazer is the love notions metra blazer in royal blue ponte from missouri star quilt co i actually made this last winter but it was the perfect color to use for the mayor the piece i made new for this costume specifically is my navy ponte pencil skirt patterns for pirates the fabric is from raspberry creek as well i didn t necessarily plan a costume on pieces i had and will be able to wear again but it worked out well chickaletta agrees ryder needs us there s one more element that makes these costumes super cool in my opinion it s those pup tags ben s is appliqued on but the kids tags are 3d printed daddy printed them and the rest of the pups also over the summer and we painted them do you have any paw patrol been more excited about a dress in awhile as soon as i saw the tester call i immediately pictured lena and her bestie kayleigh each in one for a photoshoot at kayleigh s pool so a mermaid photoshoot is exactly what we did the main scales fabric for lena s dress is from raspberry creek fabrics kayleigh s is from amanda s bundles we got news of this call early so there would be more time to gather appropriate fabrics i had some mermaid scales on hand along with a shiny silver fabric from lena ms halloween costume last year but i did order more scales for kayleigh s dress along with tulle i sewed the mermaid version of sirena and each dress has six layers of tulle at the bottom along with a lining i used thrift store tulle for five of them but went fancy for the top i ve never used tulle and have been wanting to try it so this was the perfect excuse i used a yard of each fancy tulle from tulletastic per the pattern each layer is meant to be gathered so i serged each with a differential of 2 i didn t end up needing to gather much at all i pinned each layer together to create the bottom of the skirt serging the tulle had an unexpected advantage i could see when the layers were not lined up as i basted the six layers together that meant i had a lot less fixing to do when i was done with that step i love this photo lena was so excited about these when the dresses were done we were ready to plan our photoshoot with kayleigh lena and i practiced some mermaid makeup the day before these scream best friends the girls had a great time kayleigh has a pool and we are lucky to get lots of swim invites we knew it would be the perfect backdrop for mermaids even though they re fancy these dresses are very comfortable kayleigh said it s soft in here as she put hers on her main fabric is dbp and lena s is swim many types will for for this dress back and front details waist flutters colorblocked bodice with ruffles i noticed one big imperfection after i got done that serging i did around each tulle layer it shows quite a bit from the outside of the dress you can see a white line especially on lena s between the fitted and mermaid parts of the skirt i m sure there to party but of course the forecast is full of rain luckily i finished these neon raincoats just a few days ago i don t exactly follow trends but i hear neon is in this summer this fabric frays a ton prep was necessary my mom acquired a pile of mystery fabric from a free pile we re not sure what exactly it is but it seemed fairly waterproof we tested it out and water beads up and rolls right off i started plotting some raincoats from it another quality of this fabric is that it frays a lot before starting i serged around all the edges of all the outer shell pieces the finished shells now to do it all again with the lining the shells went together fairly quickly once the pockets were on there s even a three piece hood lena chose all the colors we had for her jacket and decided where she
