Text of the page (random words):
n t say they were ever exceptional i just notice there is a difference i would not try to play full court basketball with how my body is currently probably break my ankle or something i still enjoy riding my bike though not so much with 90 lbs of kids in the bike trailer here i am at my first treatment in may here i am on my birthday in june notice the i v connected to the port in my chest here i am at my last treatment in october you might not notice how much hair i lost but i think i am down to a third of my original thickness i started with an absurd and frequently burdensome quantity of hair so i was able to lose a lot of it and not have many people notice once i dropped the oxaliplatin my hair stopped falling out and because i prepared myself for a dramatic hair change and my hair was starting to look really wispy thin i went ahead and cut my hair shorter than ever before don t have a picture now but i will post one later posted in uncategorized 11 comments halfway through treatment posted on august 4 2011 by thelongglass angie thomas my mother told me that you wanted her to give me a kick in the pants to write another blog post because you were sick of checking my blog for four months without any updates so here you are my mom didn t actually kick me but the effect was there it has been awhile since i last posted it is not that i haven t had anything to say but that there has been too much to say and it is hard to catch up after my surgery my brother brady and sister natalie traded off taking care of me and my family it was hard to stay down and rest when i wanted so much to spend time with them it was such a relief for martin and me to have the help i recovered well from the surgery the lab results from the surgery came back with good news the tumor which had been shrinking quite nicely disappeared and they were unable to find any cancer in the lymph nodes i had a complete therapeutic response to the pre surgery treatment i could not have received any better news chances of the cancer recurring in that area of my body are close to zero hooray this is exactly what we were hoping and praying and fasting for thanks for all of your help in this regard however because the cancer had been in my lymph nodes i still have to go through six months of chemotherapy i started the chemo four weeks after the surgery and i reached the halfway point at my last treatment i am at huntsman with my mother waiting for my next infusion right now i have to admit though i am getting tired of coming in for treatments the nausea seems to start as soon as i get into the building before i even have the treatment i doubt that i will ever be able to eat a meal at the restaurant here without feeling yucky medications handle my side effects pretty well and after about six days i am mostly feeling myself again i get tired easily all the way to the next treatment but i get a pretty good week each cycle i have this great group of people at our church who live in our neighborhood who take my kids every day that i need help and someone brings dinner to our house every chemo day a bunch of teenage girls in the neighborhood have come over to clean my house at least six times i have lost count my church ward runs like a well oiled machine my friend marilyn who took me to radiation every day for five weeks is my back up chemo buddy when no one in my family can take me having someone to talk with is the only nice thing about coming up here for treatment oh and streaming netflix words with friends and the ipad ticket to ride app certainly help to pass the time not everyone going through cancer treatment has such a fabulous support system in place and i am grateful for my friends and family who have provided me with love and help my sister kristin and brother marty and his family also came in june to help with my chemo treatments and take care of the kids i love my family i was very excited to meet my newest niece who was very stand offish but totally adorable at the same time we celebrated my birthday and kristin s as well and we made a trip up to idaho to celebrate the fourth with natalie s family i performed with the timpanogos symphony orchestra and jenny oaks baker in june which was fabulous it was really cool to have my husband kids and sister all there to see what it is i do when i escape to rehearsals every thursday night the next performance will be two days after a chemo treatment and i would have to miss half of the rehearsals so i am taking a break and our conductor will hold a spot for me until i am able to come back we went camping at bryce canyon for our big family reunion in july i handled that really well but the cold sensitivity from the chemo really got to my fingers and toes the second night so i slept at my mom s hotel the next two nights i was really glad to feel well enough on my off week to go to this as i had volunteered two years ago to help run the show my cousin really picked up the slack when i wasn t doing much of the planning perhaps a boring blog post but i think i covered my life for the past four months for those of you who are curious i will work on keeping up the blog better posted in uncategorized 6 comments heading home from the huntsman hilton posted on april 13 2011 by thelongglass my surgery was a great success apparently dr sklow was very pleased with my tissue health i didn t lose much blood and what used to be cancer appeared to be just scar tissue he repeatedly told me how ideal i was for this surgery being a young skinny yes skinny woman see kids it s ok to carry around 25 lbs of emergency storage on your person perfectly fine especially if you are guarding against chemotherapy related weight loss dr sklow had a surgery a few days ago in which he performed the same surgery on a 300 lb man small pelvis lots of fat do not an easy surgery make so despite my swollen belly i find myself feeling trim and healthy i will be going home this morning day 6 apparently i have been healing so rapidly physically moving around so normally that the nurses have been saying for the last few days how i should probably be home kinda makes me feel like this is a place for really sick people and i don t qualify i no longer have any tubes or machines hooked up so i hardly have any need for the nurses it s like i am staying in a very expensive hotel alone call it the huntsman hilton time to go home i had a tricky time figuring out if if i felt nauseous from the solid food i was eating or from lortab i had headaches that bothered me more than the surgery i figured i would stop taking anything other than ibuprofen and that has worked well for me people say that my surgery is one of the most invasive you can have so i feel i am doing pretty well with it i found on day 2 that both laughing and crying full on don t work well with the pain of surgery so i am saving both for later one of the reasons i didn t want to be sent home early based off my physical bounce back was that i wanted to be more prepared to face things emotionally once i get home it is likely that i will not feel 100 before i have to start chemotherapy in four or five weeks basically i am staring at the rest of my year feeling unwell and having my kids notice that i am hoping to get the lab report today my scans showed at least 3 lymph nodes involved any more and it pushes me into the next group in stage iii no matter how it comes out though i am looking at 12 treatments of folfox starting in may posted in uncategorized 10 comments t 7 hours posted on april 7 2011 by thelongglass i graciously withheld from your eyes the pictures of the tumor from my december 21st colonoscopy they weren t pretty the tumor was 5 cm wide and took up about 50 of the circumference of my rectum my surgeon bradford sklow examined me three weeks into treatment and again four weeks after i completed radiation and chemotherapy you might remember that there was a noticeable decrease in the tumor s size midway through my treatment well we had even better news at the second visit he could see that the tumor had shrunk to be totally flat and only the size of a dime at that point i still had four weeks left for it to shrink in typical long family fashion i will now take guesses on the final size the last eight weeks have been very busy for our family we were able to swim feed ducks and go to the byu art museum as well as catch up with a whole lot of our friends and family martin s iphone app home food storage app revenue paid back all of his expenses and he decided to offer it free to everybody our landscaping is finally underway the rock work and grading is about half done my church basketball team got second place in a regional tournament the night before i completed my radiation and chemo i decided to go ahead and audition for a new local symphony i had nothing to lose so i practiced my violin solo for a couple hours and went in they wanted me in even though i told them that i would probably not be able to perform with them because of my surgery so i enjoyed rehearsing with them for about four weeks all of these things have kept our lives feeling very normal albeit quite busy i even managed to get my house somewhat organized in anticipation of my family coming in to take care of my kids tomorrow at 5 00 a m martin and i will be on our way to the huntsman cancer institute in salt lake city for my surgery dr sklow will basically remove the affected section of my colon and rectum and reconnect everything the surgery will last about four hours and will probably include the placement of a temporary ileostomy to help in the healing of the resection i am not crazy about that but there isn t much i can do about it i am not crazy about having cancer but there isn t much i can do about that either i might be a bit reclusive however martin got me a new ipad for my hospital stay so i will be able to check email and my blog my little brother gave me a fat stack of classics to read quasimodo should be interesting when i am doped up on pain meds thanks again for your help prayers and well wishes everyone should have this kind of support system when they run into trouble posted in uncategorized 13 comments where s the salt posted on february 25 2011 by thelongglass i had my last day of radiation two weeks ago my chemo pump and iv were removed that same day and i am just about back to normal better than normal in some ways the tumor responded very quickly to the treatment consequently the symptoms that prompted me to go to the doctor in the first place have disappeared radiation side effects have a delay but it was still manageable at its worst and i only lost about 5 pounds over the course of treatment i didn t ride my bike a good way to gauge my soreness for a couple weeks but this week i have ridden without much discomfort thanks for the prayers and fasting you have done on my behalf the doctors and nurses seem surprised by how well my body handled it all but i think i had a lot of help the chemo side effects that most bothered me were nose bleeds mouth sores headaches change in sense of taste and loss of energy now two weeks off the chemo the only thing that still bothers me is that i can t taste salt properly very few things taste how they should last night a nice neighbor brought over a pot of chicken noodle soup and homemade wheat bread it was delicious the first thing to taste properly sodium filled in weeks i really enjoyed it so now i get to pretend that life is normal and my body is totally healthy except that i played full court scrimmage basketball on wednesday night and my body is really sore in a good way it wasn t generally known that i recently finished cancer treatment so no one babied me boy did it kick my trash as much as i would like to blame bad skills and shortness of breath on a body weakened by chemo and radiation i am simply out of shape i didn t faint or anything so i consider the night a success i have a good six more weeks to enjoy my out of shape body before surgery and more chemo i have my surgery planned for april 8 i ll be in the hospital 5 7 days and heal for a few weeks before chemo starts again thank you to all of you who have sent me email and facebook messages i am sorry if i haven t responded yet but i will it is fabulous getting back in touch with my friends posted in uncategorized 9 comments a ruthless winner posted on february 16 2011 by thelongglass by way of an update our firstborn hereafter referred to as ruthless won my family s annual college bowl pool in the early years of the long family bowl pool we got a printout of the bowl games maybe 20 games all up and circled our picks the winner was the person who picked the most winning teams this tradition has become very technical in recent years with espn offering weighted confidence scores and a tiebreaker on the championship game in december our girls each made their picks based off mascots the cat family were favorites and win loss records they figured out what those numbers meant about halfway through their picks all in all our family did very well none of us have ever won either the bowl pool or the march madness picks so to have all 5 of us in the top 8 was unexpected crouching hippo that s me came in a very satisfying second it is the perfect name for someone who never wins you know the always crouching you just wait i m biding my time kind of name when i win i will change my name to pouncing hippo equally absurd and equally fabulous really though ruthless made some crazy great picks her overall rank was 397 and her score was in the 99 9 percentile for picks across espn users pretty lucky or pretty ruthless ameliorate this was excited to have ruthless win the trophy yes counterclintuitive had a trophy made a few years ago you d think she had won it herself the way she wouldn t let ruthless have a picture taken alone with it ruthless s win was a win for the family i suppose ameliorate this was in fact the one who taught ruthless about the win loss records under the team names so perhaps she should get a bit of credit posted in uncategorized 1 comment genetic testing posted on february 3 2011 by thelongglass so maybe you have heard of genetic testing for breast cancer risk there has been a lot of talk about that in the last 15 years not everyone who has breast cancer has a genetic marker for it and it affects men as well as women but the percentage of the population that has the gene mutation has a dramatically increased risk for developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer well i had no idea there were genetic tests for colorectal cancer until i was diagnosed with it but you know i didn t actually know much about colorectal cancer period so big surprise upon waking from what i thought would be a pretty uneventful colonoscopy my gastroenterologist told me that i had a large lesion in my colon i would need a ct scan and blood work done that day and because of my young age and good health history the cancer was likel...
