the weekend kick ball is always a favorite sarah helped them set up their microscope and learn how to use it and grant and frank are very handy to have around and would have gotten into a lot more great ending to a a week they had spent with pastor afonso i know there is lots of technology in tete because it was the church that requested taking a group photo after the service and we just asked for one at the same time the pastor had us read scripture in english portuguese and chewa grant taught sunday school with chris translating to nyungwe and then chris preached in nyungwe it is always special to hear different languages in worship and remember what diversity exists among god s people who will one day be together worshiping around his throne daniel wanted to stay outside and play i wish i had a time lapse video of all the things i saw come by the side door opening a boy rolling a tire hoop goats kids kicking homemade soccer balls children dancing a boy pushing a little homemade two wheeled car baby goats etc the women and children sit on mats on one side of the sanctuary while the men sit on benches on the other side our mat got more crowded as the service went on also pictured below tuning the drum with the heat from the fire before the service got started afterwards we visited under the shade while the ladies from the church made dinner for us at the pastor s house one way of honoring guests here is to have them eat by themselves so we ate inside while everyone else ate outside the team liked the food masa thick porridge made from millet greens and little beans sarah and the president of the women s group are standing with the large mortar and pestle used to pound the millet by hand please pray for our brothers and sisters in matambo to walk with jesus and to love each other and their community well posted in uncategorized 2 comments peanuts and millet for jesus august 28 2019 we had a great volunteer team from fbc tifton with us last week the team was here to get to know some of the agricultural extensionists and to become familiar with local farming methods we had a couple of immigration hiccups and the weather was unusually cool and rainy for this time of the year it s dry season but the time with this team was a huge blessing to us and to people in marara district looks who s already in the stew pot for this update i asked one of the team members sarah if i could pull some of her quotes from her facebook updates and she graciously agreed sarah is an agricultural research professional and studies entomologist she knows her stuff and can certainly explain this things better than i can so some of her comments are below in italics from day 2 we started the day with a grower meeting that was open to local farmers and the extension personnel we talked about basic growing practices and small steps they could take to improve their yields we ended the meeting with me giving my testimony and telling them about the love of christ next we went on to a 2 5 hectare vegetable field that is completely cared for by one woman pictured above she grows peanuts squash sweet corn okra sweet potatoes tomatoes and on and on she s a rock star another highlight of the day is that i saw a hippo in the wild and it was just too amazing day 3 was so special to me we began the day with a meeting with the extensionists that turned into a training on how to create research trials in order to put some meat behind what we ve been teaching they were excited to learn how to set up a research trial and to hopefully see the benefits of these techniques we hope to have local farmers begin implementing next we visited two vegetable farms the first grower farms 2 hectares and the second 56 hectares both these grow ers showed great technique with their innovative ways to irrigate use of insecticides as well as use of cover crops the second grower has 6 wells and even is doing a joint project with his extensionist to look at the use of drip irrigation these two men have done a lot with very limited resources and it was an honor to be able to listen to them talk about it we ended the day with another sighting and a beautiful sunset the group came home with all goodies from the farmers they gave much of it away but still had papaya greens lemons and lettuce our partners who pastor and lead the 2 churches relatively near this area were with the team for each day they also met and built rapport with these officials and local farmers please pray for the lord to bless these laborers and to raise up more to work alongside them in these vast areas without a strong gospel witness pray that they can see increased yields in their own fields as they implement some of the things the team shared posted in uncategorized 1 comment camping with the guys august 19 2019 chris went to teach at one night of the boys campout and daniel went with him daniel was so excited about going on this special guy trip with his dad they took some welcomed supplies to the boys including popcorn and a cake the guys camp out was a bit more hard core on teaching life skills they were divided into teams to do all of the daily tasks they went to bed early and got up early both of these campouts were the dream of our church leader and he took a week of his vacation from work to lead the boys they had a little bowling set and daniel s favorite moment was when he won 4 times in a row and the boys carried him around shouting campeão campeão chris said daniel did great on the camp out and is ready for the next one they also made tracks and drove their flip flops as cars the boys were precious singing their song and reciting their bible verses for us on sunday they had us all laughing with the ambassador of the king theme song posted in uncategorized 1 comment abs goes to camp part ii august 18 2019 abigail had a great week at camp the girls were all hanging in there by the half way point abigail did have to come home for a good nights sleep a few times along the way but she was right back in the middle of things each morning she really liked when some of the girls braided her hair i am so thankful for my dear friend who leads this group and who has had such an influence on our girls the outlet she has given these girls has helped abigail grow in her friendships and in her ability and motivation to communicate well in portuguese only jesus can adequately reward her for her sacrifice this week emma claire came for lots of visits but was mostly interested in playing around emma did get to stay for the dancing one night and says she s ready to spend the night too on the final night everyone walked to kfc for an ice cream cone and some picture taking this was a huge treat and we can t tell the boys who were stuck out in the bush today at worship each group presented what they learned and we all praised jesus for it the boys and girls had a special meal and cake together afterwards to officially end their week of camp it was a wonderful and completely exhausting week posted in uncategorized 1 comment abs goes to camp part i august 17 2019 we returned to tete one week ago our kiddos are seasoned travelers and daniel charged ahead at the airport like he could navigate everything himself if we d just give him his passport and boarding pass it was wonderful to take the short flight instead of the multi day drive to get home as soon as we got home abigail went straight to the adolescent girls camp out that had started a day earlier this year our church decided to have a 7 night camp out for girls in town and another for boys in a rural area abigail was given a warm welcome by the girls and jumped right in part of the goal of the week was for the girls to learn to cook clean and hand wash their clothes the camp was possible because of the amazing leader who has worked with these girls all year she organized and led while some precious the young women helped serve the girls mostly by working in the kitchen these amazing ladies worked hard for jesus and for the girls this week the leader took one on one time with each girl to share the gospel and hear what was on their hearts i was there for some time everyday to teach and help lead games but abigail was on her own for the most part we were amazed by the maturity we saw in her this week to stick with and do things that were a challenge these was a bit of culture shock involved for her at first but she did great i did help her haul her water for her first bucket bath in the shower up the hill she loved singing and dancing until midnight but didn t like running on very little sleep the following day we played many games but the favorite was definitely the local game fill it a game involving one person filling a bottle with sand and dumpling it out again before she gets hit by a person on either side of her trying to hit her with a ball if the person in the middle can catch the ball when it is thrown at her she gets to kick it as far away as she can giving her time to fill and empty the bottle it is intense and dusty the girls ate a lot of rice masa beans cabbage and greens for breakfast they had tea with sugar and bread or rice porridge abigail passed on the breakfast salad below one of the things i worked on with the girls was a gospel presentation my heart wanted to burst listening to them each share it studying the bible in a personal quiet time to be continued posted in uncategorized 1 comment lion and giraffe day august 6 2019 after a great week of meetings and daniel recovering from being very sick over the weekend we had a fun family day at the lion and safari park it is the winter time here and can be very cold so this gorgeous and sunny 75 degree day was a beautiful gift that we made the most of we visited here when abigail was 1 and then again when she was 2 years old and it has moved locations and improved since that time daniel and emma claire had never been so it was a lot of fun to visit emma claire was brave to feed the giraffe but didn t want to get too close daniel kept his distance and the one time he got close enough to pet the giraffe it looked like it ended with a hug we went on a predator safari tour to see the lions wild dogs and cheetahs kept at this park and we learned so many new things about the animals from our expert guide we had thought we might visit the zoo on this day but it was much better for us to be the ones in the cage truck and leave the animals roaming around it is great to be 8 and i love both of these expressions of this snaggle toothed cutie we laughed looking at the pictures when we realized that chris had on his down town carrollton shirt for our african tourist outing in true south african fashion there was an amazing play area for the kids abigail is getting a little tall for playgrounds but she still wants to play we had a yummy lunch at a restaurant where we could look out and see the wildebeest and giraffes and the highlight of everything was petting the lion cubs these little guys were 5 months old we were told not to get near their heads and to only touch their backs that s kind of hard when they are moving all around and one in particular was a bit rowdy the one with abigail never woke up while being petted or when the rowdy cub jumped on him chris had his hand nibbled on a bit look at the size of those paws so much sibling love out of all the cool things we could do on this trip when we were making a wish list with the kids while still in tete they told us they wanted to buy gum from one of those machines for the first time the lion park hooked them up with their first opportunity to buy gum from a gum ball machine i never cease to be surprised by things that seem exotic to our tcks posted in uncategorized 6 comments store it up and give it away july 25 2019 i got to meet with the mensagerias group last week the girls were helping each other write down the new scripture passages that they would work on memorizing next it blessed my heard to see these girls sharing bibles and copying down god s word into their notebooks they are all excited about a week long camp out they are planning for school holidays in august this group has been such a blessing to help abigail connect more deeply with girls her age and to get her excited about memorizing scripture in portuguese she worked so hard this week to memorize the beatitudes and she shared them with other girls who came over to play one day lord may these girls delight in your word and store it up in their hearts give them a deep
