nce new music tuesday ii koi dance it s kind of crazy that this post was only the second installment of new music tuesday it s pretty auspicious and it indicates how long i ve been working on koi dance press release for koi dance i sent this press release to the local newspaper in the hopes i d get some kind of interview or something at the time of writing i m not sure if they ve put anything t co ydj1ucrmij catturd catturd2 august 6 2026 his wife came up with the title jalapeño poopers my brother asked me to write a blog post with that title so here we are i m never one to turn down some scatological fun but back to that tweet or are they called xes or xs or exs now from feline dookie catturd doesn t it seem like we re experiencing tons of diarrhea inducing outbreaks in our food lately by now we re all familiar with the infamous cyclosporiasis which has had a whopping 0 1 of michigan s population glued to the porcelain throne with around 22 700 cases nationwide nearly half 11 500 of those cases are from michigan itself most notoriously taco bell which is already known for its diarrheic properties had lettuce infected with the dookie inducing spores dr wife and i eat at taco bell almost every sunday after church and i forbade any lettuce for at least a couple of weeks after taco bell sent out a reassuring e mail that they d removed the offending lettuce from their supply lines believe it or not i trusted taco bell yum incorporated i didn t trust their franchisees to toss the old lettuce although i think we re in the clear now now that other staple of mexican cuisine the spicy jalapeño is spreading salmonella across the land in looking at the map in this new york post piece it seems that minnesota and colorado have the highest number of cases with large swaths of the midwest suffering from the highest concentrations there are even 5 to 6 cases here in south carolina granted the total cases according to that map are around 345 nationwide probably fewer than people who just have run of the mill loose stools and diarrhea from eating too many clean jalapeño poppers at any given moment in the country additionally there have been no deaths yet and even the dreaded cyclosporiasis seems to be responsible for only two that s two too many of course but as far as devastating outbreaks go that s not screaming nationwide panic even if the news coverage seems to be leaning in that direction granted i wouldn t be ordering any salad in michigan anytime soon what i ve noticed too is that the news cycle s hysteria is not taking the way it usually does sure it could be because the numbers are nationally fairly low it s also possible to avoid consuming contaminated foods to some extent whereas a communicable disease is a bit harder to 65 536 back to the grind 202 6 6 august 2026 3 august 2026 the portly politico leave a comment teachers at my school reported back this past tuesday while i am no longer teaching full time i also had to go in for a day of professional development and training unlike my full time colleagues i am not present for the various registration days when kids come in to get their textbooks and what not it s a tad surreal but i m not complaining i rather like working from home most days i ll soon be sharing my weekly chapel sermons devotionals here so stay tuned one thing that will be an adjustment is not putting together tests quizzes handouts slides and the like i was compiling all of my materials for world history for the teacher who is taking that class on this year and it was a massive folder the sweet lady who is taking over my music ensembles she is an accomplished singer songwriter and will do a great job and i have been coordinating on how to prepare for concerts etc i created a google drive folder for her with lead sheets and tabs and what not from the past fifteen years and it ran to 800 files granted some of those are doc files that i then converted to pdfs but that still comes out to around 400 unique files quite a bit of music it s kind of wild to consider how much sheer content a teacher especially a history and apparently music teacher produces one of my former colleagues and friends once compared us to content creators we re basically churning out multiple fifty five ish minute podcasts or youtube videos every day i ve likened it to being an overworked cruise ship entertainer without access to the buffet you re giving several performances a day in education though the cruisers are more weekenders out of orlando with carnival not a five night voyagers on a classier line like royal caribbean well here s to seeing what this new role and school year hold classes resume on 12 august 2026 in six days and then we re off with that here is 7 to some other bloggers and we ll all learn about each other perhaps here are the questions read more local piano recital review 4 august 2026 3 august 2026 the portly politico 2 comments last summer i filled in for the pianist of the first united methodist church here in our new little town their regular pianist was until this past sunday teen phenom john patrick hutchinson who is already a world class classical pianist at the age of seventeen actually i think he turns eighteen today based on my foggy recollection of the pre concert notes happy birthday jph hutchinson gave a farewell concert called a final measure notes before departure this past sunday evening at the church it s his farewell because he ll be heading to conservatory in a couple of weeks instead of being held in the sanctuary where the piano is unfortunately hidden by the organ it was held in a small chamber just off of the sanctuary and it was packed the old men of the church started grabbing additional chairs from various sunday school classrooms and other church hidey holes as attendees poured in as they continued to do well after the advertised start of the program it was really amazing seeing in this small city in an obscure corner of south carolina several dozen people i estimated about 80 people in attendance turning out to hear this young man play the size of the crowd matched the size of the talent hutchinson played with a beautiful perceptive touch drawing out the colors of each piece his dynamics were varied and intense and he played the technical passages of each piece with a light deftness that made the notes almost float the program was very balanced between romantic impressionistic baroque and modern classical he opened with franz schubert s sonata in a major d 664 a piece from the first half of the eighteenth century that foreshadows some of the developments of the latter half of that century there were harmonies and colorings of chords that sounded almost twentieth century in nature imagine how daring this piece would have been in schubert s time i did not record any of his performance refreshing there were no cell phones whipped out during the recital but i ll share performances of his pieces from other people here s alexander gavrylyuk playing the schubert after this three part sonata we had a brief intermission hutchinson resumed the second half with the andante from alexander scriabin s sonata no 2 in g minor op 19 sonata fantasy the piece hinted at the developments in tonal experimentation of the early twentieth century apparently scriabin developed his own system of atonality independent of arnold schoenberg s in famous twelve tone composing system this piece balanced late stage romanticism and even impressionism with some of those more shall we say daring innovations of the early twentieth century overall though i d say it evoked chopin here s yunchan lim playing the piece next came j s bach s prelude and fugue in d minor not to be confused with his famous toccata and fugue in d minor the one always heard in scary movies i love a good fugue and this piece really highlighted hutchinson s precision as well as bach s beautifully mathematical mind it was a shorter piece which made for a nice little refreshment after the longer sonata fantasy here s a performance by marta czech hutchinson closed with the most modern classical piece of the program emma lou diemer s serenade toccata it s a piece that experiments with lively polyrhythms and often harsh dissonances but does so without descending into pure noise territory the dissonances serve a dynamic and musical purpose there are also some flowing and painterly sections which give the piece something of a contemplative yin to the more experimental yang here s a performance from my alma mater the university of south carolina performed here by paige broadworth on 4 february 2024 after a standing ovation hutchinson returned to the piano to play a jaunty ragtime tune i m not sure of the title of the piece but it was quite fun the little old lady sitting next to me started telling me her whole life story during the encore so i couldn t quite appreciate the piece in full but it was fun and bouncy if i had to choose one word to sum up this recital i d pick color hutchinson pulled the unique tonal colors out of each piece indeed the program other than perhaps the bach selection from the well tempered clavier seemed to focus on pieces with rich complex tone colors and like a master painter hutchinson interpreted the colors of each piece with a skill beyond his years also what a gift this church has been blessed with a phenomenal young talent so has the town it is proof that even perhaps often it is in out of the way places where talents are bursting forth yes perhaps those provincial talents inevitably are drawn to the cultural centers new york city la nashville des moines but they come from all across our vast great nation all i can say
