Text of the page (random words):
om the same people and cultures in northern or central italy it s ridiculous to compare a sicilian diaspora to say roman language and culture southern italians immigrated to the us because of discrimination and poverty and violence in their homeland sometimes not always european derision of european american diaspora groups is just a repetition of the same ethnic and religious disputes that led those diaspora groups to become diasporas in the first place which i believe is what the op was referring to just like there is no singular european culture there also is no singular italian german polish irish etc culture the national borders of the various european countries that exist today are quite recent europe is a collection of unique and diverse ethnic groups languages and cultures and just as it s wrong for americans to treat italy like a single monoculture it s also wrong for for example romans to act like sicilians aren t real italians i also see europeans complain about seeming american culturelessness or the melting pot i see complaints that american patriotism is always racist and is always an expression of american exceptionalism which not to go off on a tangent but it s quite rich to see europeans moral grandstand about american racist given the way that romani people are still treated the antisemitism the ethnic clashes between people just a border over not to mention the fact that american racism is a direct descendant of exported european racism and colonialism and if there s such an issue with american self identity then if anything americans embracing their immigration stories and their heritage would be a good thing it s actually vitally important for americans to know where they come from because all americans that are not indigineous americans came from somewhere else whether in bondage or through immigration and immigration was often out of a sense of desperation it s perfectly understandable for europeans to be irritated by americans who make mockeries of european cultures but as with many things there very much is nuance cardassiangoodreads i think there s an argument in both of these directions diasporas are a legitimate expression of these cultures but they are also distinct cultures they can also create new kinds of culture connections e g there are some broad similarities in the experiences of irish italian and polish americans due to having come to america as immigrants around the same time and all being primarily catholic at a time when that was still seen as highly unusual and suspect and also sharing religious communities in a lot of places they lived but those experiences aren t necessarily shared between irish italian and polish people in ireland italy and poland itself also just want to note there s a bit more variety in for instance the italian diaspora in the usa that is suggested here as an italian american whose family comes from central italy but as part of the classic late 19th early 20th century ellis island immigrant narrative but southern italians and sicilians are heavily represented for sure and that should be noted especially in terms of dynamics in italy itself between northern vs southern italians when people in italy look down on italian americans it also distinctly changes certain things that affect italian american culture in general because all of those people from different regions of italy are thrown together whereas in italy itself different parts of the country have distinct accents cuisines and other aspects of local and regional culture pizza for instance originating in southern italy particularly naples being a big part of italian american cuisine specifically such that every part of the usa with a significant italian population has its own variation including my hometown of detroit one thing i d also give europeans is the way that a lot of americans of x descent can have an insensitive way of talking over them in terms of current political situations in those countries i think this comes up especially with eastern europe lately there was a big attempt in 2024 by some polish american groups to get polish americans to vote for harris because of trump and vance s especially vance sheesh pro putin and anti ukraine politics but it largely fell on deaf ears because most polish americans who are third or fourth generation americans aren t well informed of and don t feel closely connected to the politics of a place their ancestors came from a century ago as a polish american who is more knowledgeable about and in touch with her heritage and has a polish speaking parent i feel like even i while having more of a sense of how russian irredentism is a threat to poland and polish people than most polish americans and being appalled that so many voted trump still don t have the immediate and visceral fear that someone who is literally there and has to worry about russia invading where they live has there are numerous other examples of this e g the much greater diversity of attitudes about israel palestine among diaspora jews compared to israelis the way that a lot of irish americans are prone to ignorant statements about the troubles and other recent ish irish politics that isn t to say people in the place they came from are automatically more correct on every issue but it does mean that there s a removal and that people in the diaspora can speak insensitively about issues that affect people in the original country as much as vice versa thethirdromana i think part of the problem here is the different ways that many americans and many europeans conceive of civic and ethnic identity there was an interesting example of this recently with kumail nanjiani on taskmaster he s a pakistani american who lives in the usa and is a naturalised american citizen to most british people that makes him american it would be at best rude and at worst actively racist to call him pakistani without qualification or to emphasise his pakistani ness over his american ness nanjiani clearly doesn t see it that way himself at some point he was doing well on a task and greg davies started chanting usa usa nanjiani gently corrected him that he s pakistani so davies switched to pakistan pakistan but it was a bit uncomfortable because in the uk emphasising someone s ethnic background over their civic identity is generally the preserve of the far right this also applies to how people self identify i ve lived in the uk all my life bar four years in ireland but i m ethnically three quarters german i speak german and i hold a german passport but i wouldn t describe myself as german without further qualification i would say my mother is german or i m half british half german why half british and not a quarter british because my grandmother was sudeten german so already a politically complicated background but she lived in the uk for the vast majority of her life making her british anything more than that feels like i m claiming an identity that i don t really have a right to claim in theory this is just two equally acceptable but different ways of seeing the world in practice though it makes americans feel like europeans are denying their heritage and europeans feel like americans are asserting that ethnicity matters more than the civic conception of identity much like our local racists do for what it s worth i don t think this is what americans are usually asserting they re just saying that their own ethnicity matters to them but it doesn t always come across that way and of course there are some americans who are actively racist about it e g irish americans who believe themselves to be more irish than someone who is not ethnically irish but who has settled in ireland 396 notes may 18th 2026 open in app facebook tweet reddit mail embed permalink linguisticparadox penny anna hello hello off the back of the recent book polling i decided to put together a little reclist i m calling literary fiction i really enjoy as someone who is mostly an sff reader some of these have speculative elements others are books that i just think go hard here we are cloud atlas by david mitchell most of david mitchell s books are simply a blast imo if you re only going to readone it has to be cloud atlas if there was ever a book that has everything it is cloud atlas as a word of warning i will say if you are unfamiliar it consists of 6 nested stories and the opening section the pacific journal of adam ewing is a bit dense but if you power through it you will get to other sections like the 1930s doomed gay romance and the fast food clone dystopia that are a great time invisible cities by italo calvino i would warmly recommend reading this one if you are into writing fantasy in particular a breezy 165 pages where each chapter is a description of a different fictional city the prime of miss jean brodie by muriel spark we now enter into books that simply fuck i feel like the prime of miss jean brodie is potentially a tough sell if you are not already into the classics given that the premise does not sound very exciting but i gotta say dude trust me this one ranks on 100 books to read before you die or whatever lists over and over for a reason probably the most perfectly constructed novel i have ever read and under 200 pages fictions by jorges luis borges this is another one i would recommend if you are into writing fiction pierre menard author of the quixote in particular has been living rent free in my mind for years im always wanting to reference it i wanna be like wow this is a real pierre menard author of the quixote situation but i worry no one will know what i m talking about and i will sound like the gregory berrycone guy anyway borges is really good the blind assassin by margaret atwood i ve read a good chunk of margaret atwood and this is solidly my favourite just an absolutely banging read the sections about the titular blind assassin are extremely cool the plot creeps along to this like slow burning reveal that will have you like ohh ohhh we have always lived in the castle by shirley jackson as w blind assassin this is another one that will slow burn you into a big oh oh no i read it in a single day it s under 200 pages i like a book that is short and it really cracks along black narcissus by rumer godden i would just like to say that rumer godden is a wildly underrated writer i came across her first via her children s books and subsequently sought out her adult fiction and was like fuck me anyway black narcissus is about a group of english nuns trying to set up a convent in the himalayas and instead get into some messed up psychological horror has a movie adaptation that offended the catholic legion of decency rebecca by daphne du maurier this is one of ur classic books where everyone says its really really good and then you read it and are like wowie that was really really good the metamorphosis by franz kafka look u have probably already read this one bcos we all love it but if you haven t then you definitely should its only 70 pages big bugge i have read about half of these and second the recommendations for all of them the blind assassin in particular is incredible 329 notes may 17th 2026 open in app facebook tweet reddit mail embed permalink penny anna penny anna bookriot 100 must downward spiral began in 2018 all systems red the murderbot diaries martha wells was published in 2017 and gideon the ninth tamsyn muir was published in 2019 the fifth season nk jemisin was published in 2015 given that the editor included a different nk jemisin i presume fifth season simply hadn t hit all time classic status yet the editor stated upfront that they included 1 book per author i have no idea what we have always lived in the castle shirley jackson is doing there given that it categorically is not sff how many of bookriot s 100 sci fi fantasy novels by female authors have you read 0
