talking yesterday with wrath of the badger about renly and stannis and it sparked some thoughts so of course i did what i always do and opened a google docs document the following day and started writing so basically what i wanted to say before i went off on a tagent was powerscaling the baratheon brothers is stupid and reductive you can like one better you can find one better suited for the throne you can find someone more interesting but in the end you can t separate them you can t consider stannis without his relationship with renly and you can t consider renly without his relationship with stannis they have shaped each other since they were kids changed the way they see the world because of the relationship with their brother let s start with stannis stannis shouldering responsibility since he was a teenager having to step up as a father figure to renly because it s his duty he owes it to the parents that drowned under the waves and he owes it to robert his older brother who has entrusted him with that task and it doesn t matter if he resents that task that job of taking care of a little kid when he is barely a man grown himself when that s a chore for women when he has already bled for robert gone against the law and the king for him put blood over duty for once but he listens takes care of the little kid even when the tyrells surround storm s end even cressen who treats him like a child but understands always understands ignoring the kid s wailing for him not to go not to leave him with a castellan he doesn t know for him not to take cressen and why why why why stan have i done something is it my fault do you have to leave like mom and dad like robert why does everyone have to leave stannis marries a woman he doesn t know and doesn t want because robert tells him to he bears the humiliation of his brother soiling his marriage bed fathering another bastard he won t take care of he never takes care of anyone not even if it is his duty and years pass in the dark island of dragonstone news reach him of how beloved renly is to those in storm s end the smallfolk love him like they would never love you the lords flock him drawn like moths to a flame just like robert robert tells him renly is taking the tyrells youngest son for a squire it seems like they get on like a house on fire stannis didn t expect how much that would hurt i could continue but we all know what happens next to the little kid and the sullen boy and then there s renly he doesn t remember his parents nor the time when robert lived with him his first memories and glowering at renly robert is another tale entirely when he comes to storm s end he gives renly presents and spins him around in his arms the world whirling around him he wants to be as strong as robert someday but when he s ten they bring a wailing babe to his castle he s robert s bastard and ser cortnay tells him no one wants him in king s landing renly thinks that that s why edric s here the forgotten baratheons always end up in this castle it seems he decides he doesn t want to be forgotten he s always liked colours and now his clothes are full of them that means people won t overlook him he laughs the loudest and cracks the best jokes that means people enjoy his company he smiles and listens and makes all the right noises that means people love him but they don t not really renly thinks they love a mask but it is better that than ending up like stannis so he keeps the mask knowing that he could become his brother when he s thirteen robert makes renly take loras tyrell as a squire the loneliness fades away bit by bit he s never had a friend before and he likes being able to be a kid again for the first time renly thinks that maybe love is something more than looking like the perfect lord with the perfect smile that maybe love doesn t mean to leave he prays that loras doesn t the tyrells are a happy family and the siblings love each other he feels at home there that ensures that he doesn t talk to stannis again not if he can help it his brother doesn t understand he s never liked loras for some reason renly can t understand why the siege was ages ago and it means nothing he doesn t realise that maybe his search for happiness for love and pleasure comes from being denied all that for years he s appointed to the small council it doesn t matter that he s the youngest there because the other members laugh when he jokes especially when he makes fun of stannis it s been years since he s seen his brother it means nothing he learns to play the game dons the same mask he used in storm s end so people love him there too he won t end up like robert drinking and whoring with a devil for a wife nor like stannis boring and sour and with no love in his heart we all know what happens next to the bright lord and his cold brother the peach is all that he has achieved all that stannis can t have he offers him storm s end but knows the peach and what it means is more valuable he d give up his castle for the touch of loras hands and the sound of his laughter any day these are things stannis has never known he s glad he isn t like his brothers but wonders whether they could ve been a whole family like the tyrells are if things had gone differently a part of him mourns what it could ve been and he wishes stannis would accept his offer but he
