that kuranes makes an appearance in other dreamland books strongly suggests that the idea of dual realities and or the immortal soul this sort of theme is explored in other books most notably beyond the wall of sleep where the narrator encounters spirit beings residing within our mortal human forms the final line of the story really does undermine this perception though given that the story could have just as easily not had this sequence added and the fact that lovecraft emphasized labelling real life kuranes as a tramp i think this is one of the few stories were you start to see lovecraft s true fears alongside the strange tension between lovecraft s well to do values and his love affair with the arcane unlike randolph carter whose interest in the dreamland is an approach goal something that carter is interested in pursuing kuranes is depicted as chasing dreams in part as a coping strategy being upset by the indifferent millions of london his turning to drugs and some of his dreams sounding a lot like drug trips is a surprisingly undermining of the supernatural for lovecraft while i find he often toys with a lack of clarity around the reality of supernatural events this is one of the few stories where its outright destabilized but the suggestion the mc was just a drug addled tramp the final inclusion of a rather large millionaire brewer is truly quite strange its definitely a comment on new money unethical trash taking over the noble lineages of drug addled dreamers and there is a strangely deft juxtaposition here while kuranes rules over celelphais in epic dreamland the powerful irl are fatso alcohol peddlers again a snapshot into lovecraft s fears of the world where dreamers are perished in the waves while fatty millionaires rule next up from beyond the cats of ulthar hp lovecraft april 14 2026 thomas edmund leave a comment in contrast to my whining about the doom that came to sarnath the cats of ulthar imho is historical fairy tale done right the story is narrated by an npc who explains how its forbidden in ulthar to kill a cat if you re following these deep dives and this sounds familiar the cats of ulthar feature in dreamquest to unknown kadath the narrator explains that this came about because back in the day there was a weird couple who allegedly ate cats everyone in the neighbourhood knew about it but were too proper or perhaps proper scared to say or do anything this sorry state of people keeping their cats indoors continued until a strange routine of mystics visited ulthar a young particularly mystical boy has a small kitten as a pet of course at some point throughout their visit the kitten goes missing and once against everyone knows whats happened but are too scared to act the boy and his crew engage in some strange magiks and nek minute all the cats of the town disappear in a case of turnabout the town assume that the odd couple have eaten all the cats but the next night they all reappear looking particularly well fed we as readers instantly understand whats happened but it takes a few days before the townsfolk finally gain courage and decide to check the couple are picked clean with nothing left but skeleton thusly the town now celebrated their cats and allows them free reign and its illegal to kill one is there much to deep dive here i think the story is correctly attributed to lovecraft s love of cats there are some interesting twists to the story the mystic troupe that essentially save the town from a pair of cat eating weirdoes they re eating the cats are unusually cast as the good guys the townsfolk are surprising in their passivity taking even a full week to check on the couple once they ve been eaten alongside the love of cats there is a sense of lovecraft s self insertion i ve mentioned in the distant past about lovecraft s contrasting personality traits his sort of prim and proper respectful persona a contrast to his admiration for the arcane and strange the townsfolk of this story seem to capture the former while the young mystical child the latter cats of ulthar feels like its inspired a number of works one stand out being gaiman s own cat tale within the sandman mythos cats have long relatively short one despite my boasting of this being a deep dive as doom that came to sarnath is a little like the street there is no central character and barely a single named character at all the story describes ib where pelagic nightmares see above reside and worship a great fish god at some point man shows up and ransacks the place driving the creatures into the great lake nearby and founding the city state of sarnath times are good despite a high priest who goes a bit loopy and dies after writing doom on a remaining fish god statue times continue to be good for 1000 years until on the anniversary of the sacking the fish folk suddenly return and start massacring everyone those that aren t killed fleeing far and wide to escape sarnath is no more and even after more eons when blonde blue eyes humans arrive really not sure why this detail is relevant there is much hesitation for any mortal man to settle or live near the strange lake with its glowing lights and fish god statues the deep doom reading up on other bloggers analyses its seems doom is actually quite a popular one i think the lack of characterization and lengthy time scale captures a certain historic feel to the piece which i think is a fair compliment to pay while i find the story a little vague it does in a way unlike other lovecraft tales capture a bit of hubris even though there is a sense that the doom of sarnath was comeuppance for the civilizations early violence the timescale and magical elements do give a sense of a divine strike rather than just human grudge holding the interplay of the end of civilization through ignorance of their enemy and decedent celebrating of their conquest on a yearly basis is meaningful but am i being too harsh to say it feels fairly obvious again perhaps ship by hp lovecraft april 8 2026 thomas edmund leave a comment the white ship not only has one of my favourite tropes motifs lighthouses its also a welcome return to some of the recurring themes in lovecraft s work recall that a common thread of randolph carters tales e g kadath and silver key dabble in the theme of childhood being a literal other world away white ship while similar is perhaps more generational the story begins with a quick description of the mc s lighthouse that has seen less and less ships since his grandfathers time mc talks about the secret wisdom of the sea and how he often sees the white ship practically gliding past whether the ocean is rough or steady eventually mc decides to alight this ship via moonbeam and what follows is a series locational encounters first they pass a sort of elven western shore reminiscent of the undying lands of lord of the rings the captain however cautions mc that those that go there never return next they pass a relatively typical lovecraftian city a well built place that appeared quite advanced however once again captain warns that the city is taken over by beasties and the streets are white with bones a bit more advanced than red with blood i suppose the final avoided place is a beautiful flowery utopia however the mc himself smells something amiss despite their appearance the place reeks of death and decay so they do not visit there either after all this avoidance they finally hit sona nyl which seems like a benign and safe place well also outside time and space where mc is able to stay for eons but over time starts to wish to see the city of cathuria an apparent place of hope and advancement its not at all clear whether this is a place mc has always known or something he gathered ideas about while spending eons in sona nyl the captain cautions against the trip however mc continues following a strange bird to where he believes cathuria lies instead of hope however a diabolical whirlpool erupts and a giant stone slab rises from the ocean sending a strange vision to mc of his wee lighthouse except sans the light it now being dark he sees a vision of a ship breaking upon the rocks and after closing his eyes returns to the original lighthouse though instead of a broken ship there is only a broken bird and thereafter the ocean told me its secrets no more and though many times since has the moon shone full and high in the heavens the white ship from the south came never again as already mentioned the twist on the themes of the white ship seem less about the loss of childhood innocence but in fact the loss of adulthood innocence the mc initially seems to do well avoiding the temptations thrice of forbidden lands and resides apparently quite happy in a land of no time and space hubris however sets in and he kinda screws everything up its interesting to me that the idea of his lighthouse failing and a ship crashing represents a sort of moral failing for the mc s hubris and even though it appears the crashed ship is just a metaphor the mc appears burdened by his actions no longer hearing the secrets of the sea i do have a wee beef with the story that its action largely just consists of the mc travelling about its a great setting and i appreciate the inclusion of an actual moral conundrum that the mc fails lovecraft stories are usually mostly about going mad without much choice in the matter falling asleep with lovecraft s beyond the wall of sleep april 7 2026 thomas edmund 2 comments this is one of the more polished lovecrafts complete even with a shakespeare quote chapter topper i have an exposition of sleep come upon me shakespeare as the story goes after a brief paragraph about the potential supernatural quality of dreams we are introduced to narrator presumably high up professional working in an institution who recounts an experience with a patient mr slater or slaader a strangely realistic quirk of oftentimes official names being hard to confirm slater arrived at the institution after a series of strange events where they seems to lose track of reality and start speaking in bizarre otherworldly ways in a manner completely outside of their typical below average intelligence presentation their admission was preceded by a particularly gruesome event where slater basically pounded a man into paste after said man tried to restraint him during an episode most in the facility treat slater as simply mad however narrator recognizing something mystical and in an action completely bizarre by most standards but relatively benign by lovecraft s brings along his mind reading device and attempts to use in on slater at first it appears not to work then narrator falls asleep and dreams of being a well being of pure energy strangely connected to another light twin and existing on a completely different scale of time and distance than human upon waking narrator is disturbed and fascinated but over time saddened to notice that slater is in fact dying the mind reader machine isn t working again and just as it seems slater is about to pass on something changes and he turns to narrator spooky spots on his face and changed eyes not slater explains to narrator that all people have a light form as well as their physical a form accessed through dreams and that not slater has a real beef with a nearby star he s been waiting for slater to die so he can go f with this star nemesis of his slater passes and narrator cut and pastes a newspaper clipping describing a brand new star appearing briefly nearby to not slater s target narrator lets us know this his boss recons he just got burnt out and dreamt up the whole thing on shattered nerves and narrator admits he isn t sure about the reality of things either then this mofo admits his boss gave him six months off work all paid completely unrealistic the dive just to continue on that last point other than being somewhat more unlikely in todays age then the supernatural stuff its interesting that this story was relatively kind to its narrator other than the time off they just get to observe some things and generally remain unaffected instead of existential dread they simply wonder sometimes if they imagined their scenario or not the same can t be said of other characters something i noted for this one is that its quite a bit more violent than other stories lovecraft despite the depth of his cosmic horror and often describing disturbing events they are often dark for their madness violation of reality he rarely resorts to particular violence i am randomly reminded of one of my favourite lovecraft inspired games hob s barrow which is also mostly dread horror but towards the end involves some surprisingly violent moments in beyond the wall of sleep we hear of slater leaving behind an unrecognisable pulp like thing that had been a living man but an hour before part of this seems to somewhat of an effort to create a more marketable story while said in jest beyond the wall of sleep does appear more finely tuned than other lovecraft pieces there are more but very minor characters and lovecraft spends more time explaining backstory and some legal process usually i feel he jumps quickly to the mysterious and weird this may also explain the slightly softer landing for the protagonist perhaps an attempt to create a more palatable story as to the supernatural stuff its also hits a little different narrator is keen to be exposed to the mystical and the supernatural elements present as fascinating almost hopeful hinting at a type of afterlife or almost dual life beyond the wall of sleep the light being s conflict with a random unknown being is quite strange perhaps a wee caution that even beings beyond our comprehension have quite understandable conflicts still or perhaps the conflict is meant to present as a sort of good vs evil level of cosmic in any case beyond the wall of sleep is a fascinating lovecraft piece for its slightly different approach its does stand out
