honestly as a way to understand a specific pov i keep seeing why do some people have such an issue with rachel reid s list about shane and ilya it seems to go semi viral very often and it makes people so angry but from my point of view the list really doesn t seem that bad it s just pointing out characteristics for the both of them as short hand the point about ilya having trauma always makes people upset as people say that shane is gay and asian and autistic in hockey but i don t see how that translates to being traumatised none of those things are inherently traumatising just states of being i don t see myself as traumatised just because i m asian the rest of the list also doesn t seem ooc i would really appreciate if you could maybe explain why it causes so much discourse since i feel like i m missing something and would like to understand full disclosure i love shane and ilya but have a lot of issue with the books because they are simply not well written on like a structural and prose level to paraphrase a post i reblogged the other day i think a lot of people love to get furious about stuff on the internet because they can t tolerate being bored and they need to stir up something to be really mad about at all times and then also mix in many people s deeply rooted conviction that getting furious about identity based stuff online and tearing people to pieces over it is a form of activism that can materially challenge structures of oppression and change the world in my experience it is not and cannot lol but ymmv i guess ok to start i also don t find the list terribly offensive as character shorthand i do agree that it is not a great look to label your character of color not smart and to then retroactively be like oh and also he s neurodivergent it was just never mentioned in the book because it s not relevant to his journey ️ but i think that as reid has clarified a number of times she meant it more as ilya has a higher degree of emotional intelligence than shane ilya is aware of and cares about things outside of hockey now i don t really see this borne out in the books lol i think they re both pretty two dimensional but i don t think she meant shane is a beautiful but functionally illiterate himbo ilya is pursuing his phd and authoring field changing treatises on nuclear physics i think it s obviously fine to be annoyed with her about this phrasing though as a white woman author who wasn t especially careful or thoughtful about how she writes her characters of color re the trauma part i think it is very legitimate for people to point out that book shane s racial identity is not developed well or explored with much care or nuance and that this is kinda especially yikes in the context of hockey an overwhelmingly white sport that has well documented issues with racism from the junior level all the way up i think people define trauma in a wide range of ways and many people online adopt a hybrid therapyspeak critical theory framework defines trauma very broadly to encompass virtually any experience with identity based microaggressions little t trauma not just big t trauma the idea here is that many little t traumas experienced over time have a cumulative negative effect on the mind body producing higher levels of chronic stress and leading to more adverse mental and physical health outcomes for people from marginalized groups shane likely experienced many microaggressions as a player of color in an overwhelmingly white sport and if you headcanon shane as autistic i feel strongly that the book does not actually depict an autistic character and this is largely after the fact fanon but others may disagree then he probably also experienced the effects of ableism more little t trauma you can agree or disagree with that broad definition of trauma but to answer your question my sense is that rr was thinking in terms of big t trauma when she described ilya as having trauma and shane as not having trauma it s just that her character notes have been interpreted by people who are looking at these characters through the lens of the little t trauma framework and so to them it seems obvious that book shane as a gay biracial asian possibly autistic character has also experienced trauma i can t speak to the racial identity piece as i am white but i have never found the little t trauma definition that useful or compelling for describing my experiences as a lesbian or a woman yes i have experienced microaggressions and yes i think the chronic stress stuff is real but i think it muddies the waters a bit to compare that to like the trauma of a sexual assault or the suicide of a parent or a hate crime i mean i ve read the critical theory lol i get the argument it just doesn t resonate with me that much and i think can create this weird sense of like it s traumatizing simply to be alive in a certain kind of body which i find antithetical to frameworks rhat are more focused world then we just get boring old shane who never gets any depth and any depth he is given is frankly just trying to explain away his shitty writing it s actually very gross when you break it down the struggling white hero who is so deep and complicated and his stiff as a board hole he fucks everybody will read these works differently and that is our sacred right there s not one correct way of reading a book show that said i personally think that the fandom hate for rr s book shane is really overblown shane is fine in the books and 1000x better in the show everyone say thank you hudson thank you jacob i think rr gives ilya more trauma than shane but not more depth this for instance is a real passage yoinked straight from ilya s brain like this is fine it s a fun look into his brain lol but it s not giving me deep and complicated it s a flat tell not show two dimensional characterization that in my mind matches rr s similarly very two dimensional depiction of shane ilya gets more screen time than shane in tlg and a kind of hamhanded depiction of clinical depression but i still think both characters remain pretty flat and underdeveloped throughout i enjoy them still but i enjoy them as characters in a popular romance novel and the reality is just that popular romance novels are pretty much never going to give you the depth of emotion or character that literary fiction can offer or even just really good fic with a more literary bent and they are also probably not going to give you deep searching nuanced explorations of how race or sexuality or trauma or mental illness or whatever shape a character s sense of self the good news is that if you hunger for books that do give you nuanced depictions of these experiences and or offer characters with more depth there are soooooooo many out there in the world happy to recommend some lol i think people can get kinda weird about this and i don t really understand why it kind of seems like a waste of energy to be mad at rr i agree that she clearly didn t give much thought to shane s racial identity but having seen the way she writes about characters grappling with their sexuality i think her depictions of shane would still leave a lot to be desired anyway idk if it makes you so mad then just don t care about the books focus on the show and write or read fic that explores the things you want to see explored 37
