op out early it s never a total loss and we can all now say a few words that we couldn t have before and certainly nut out some written items we agreed that it had been ambitious well intentioned and entirely sideswiped by other events shit as they say happens however we re still upright and relatively ok big picture none of us has an imminently terminal illness and while it is occasionally extremely difficult to remain cheerful about some of the shit that has happened these past few years one or two events do not have upsides but you learn to adjust we do our best to make sure we keep in touch with family and friends wherever they are to that end the end of year feasting continues unabated as we make a start on this year s round of birthday celebrations may your end of year i d give that establishment an excellent tripadvisor review recent distressing travel experience saw me utter that most modern of insults i m going to give them a really bad tripadvisor review i wasn t going to blame them for the torrential downpour which could reasonably be assumed to be beyond even their mighty control i wasn t even going to be too rude about the lack of availability of wheelchair assistance again that might also be expecting too much when my attempt to pre book such a thing offered the helpful suggestion that we postpone our travel to the following week uuh yeah thanks but no we ll have been and gone by then but the lack of helpful in terminal staff the lack of clear adequate signage the having to trek about 500 metres through puddles deep enough to get our feet and luggage wet the utter chaos of ongoing infrastructure upgrades that offered little to no protection against the downpour they were things where the blame could safely be sheeted home to the corporation it s a big busy airport that you d think would do passenger care a great deal better in the 21st century starting with fully covered walkways that are not riddled with potholes there are some large signs on the carpark buildings yes there are but they are not visible from the pedestrian side of things and that s what we d been reduced to because nearby passenger pick up no longer exists for arrivals there are passenger pick up areas for each terminal and they are the website claims located a short walk away from the terminals yeah no as noted above they bloody well are not unless you have seven league boots the only funny part really was dr b digging deep for his usually non existent sense of humour when i asked what make and colour car we were looking for he told me the make then propped up against a bit of railing that was never going to serve as a seat should his legs give way beneath him he added grey just like all the others just like he was by then actually it helped us laugh but didn t address the shortcomings of a passenger pick up area system that wasn t cutting it look for the big sign our driver messaged us note previous comment re in visibility of same from pedestrian viewpoint pedestrian signage is smaller and considerably harder to see especially if you re short the return trip was a little easier our swift car journey to the airport where there is genuine nearby passenger drop off at the terminal proper rather than a carpark meant we were early and could calmly deal with hiccups the different airline offered better in terminal support although finalising check in was fraught dr b kept telling me to ask someone with a red jacket assuming that is that i could a tell it was red and b see anyone not being blocked by a wider taller fellow traveller he finally got the message and bailed up someone i hadn t been able to see because i m too freaking short and you know red nah that s brown mate they waved us through for early seating but again and alas there was no wheelchair availability we were second last off the plane when we arrived home we were seated at the back but stairs being a very poor option for both of us needed to disembark from the front only the wheelchair bound passenger was behind us travel it s not all it could be but i m sure it doesn t have to be quite this damn difficult fascinating aida have it right about diy regarding air travel and it s only the prospect of sitting down with a long cold drink at the end of it all that enables us to continue i do hope you haven t had cause to give freeing realisation 13 dec really never going to set the world on fire but definitely helping my feet to feel less as if they re on fire i ve reached the point where i don t berate myself for making mistakes when i m bashing my way through something like we are the champions we have it in a flute and piano arrangement dating back to youngb s school years i try to get it right quite a lot of the time i probably do but if i reach a section where i ve obviously missed an accidental change i might just laugh and fix it or i might not i might just keep going trying to fix the mistake from there it s undoubtedly quite dreadful for dr b who s generally listening while i practise his own practice methodology is different but while i acknowledge that getting it right is the best outcome if i m almost there i m almost as happy i don t have to turn up at next week s lesson feeling guilty about any lack of improvement so there s a great deal less pressure and correspondingly greater pleasure in the undertaking it s not that i don t want to get it right it s that i m not being judged unduly about any of it as for my feet i have new shoes they are very wide very sturdy have nice solid orthotic inserts and while very boring are also very comfortable i have been told in no uncertain terms that my goal to increase my minimum daily walk to between 3 and 5km is not going to happen possibly ever but certainly not now and there will certainly never again be a 35km walk i managed a very slow 2km walk the other night and that was quite enough thank you i will be able to improve that somewhat but i m trying to be reasonable that added daily input caused the most havoc i think i might have managed to keep doing 2km walks ad infinitum and without drama and nobody is judging me scenery is merely an excuse to stop you know you re in trouble i tried to train for the bloody long walk i admit i struggled mightily barely able to do a 3km walk without pain and certainly unable to manage anything longer in the past i d easily have coped with a 12km walk as part of a weekly training routine that was then and this alas is sort of now and also sort of the future the blw is 35km most of it at unchallenging gradients but undeniably long bloody long in fact i know you d never have guessed at the end of one training walk i decided that i could best describe myself as delusional whether i used poles or not the outcome was similar whether i carried a pack or not the outcome was similar no matter which socks i wore and in that respect i finally managed to find some that did the job without falling down inside my shoes and middle aunt gave me some genuinely comfy super special socks the outcome was similar if i didn t use anti inflammatory gel and painkillers beforehand the outcome was significantly worse than if i did well duh as the kids would have it these days in short ambitious didn t come close unless you spelt that s t u p i d my gp was far too kind to laugh as he pronounced a loose diagnosis of rsi the friendly medico version was yeah nah continue present treatment and medication regimes and keep off your feet so that alas was that at least as far as the bloody long walk was concerned the podiatrist also kindly described the damage as wear and tear rather than the more accurate rack and ruin but the outcome was somewhere around the same he pointed out that my feet are such a mess that any orthotic insert would help how rude but a different one would be more beneficial in the long run also different shoes yes thank you i ll have to see about getting those good thing i have a voucher hey so in sum i ve been taking things easy and keeping off my feet to allow the acute inflammatory stage to disappear recommended exercise for the future truly short walks after the inflammation has disappeared of course and either swimming or cycling no i would never suggest cycling the menfolk reckon it s the only choice left no no no just no rowing maybe i suggest that as a thoroughly good exercise but know perfectly well that my days of voluntarily getting out of bed at 4 15am are definitely over o v e r one of my old school friends swims she calls it no excuses exercise because it s indoors the centre is always open at specific times it doesn t matter what the weather is doing outside if you re inside swimming in a heated pool you can exercise irrespective of outdoor climatic conditions oh i m familiar with the pool she uses and it s too cool for me but not as cold as any outdoor pool would be i am girding my loins as it were or at least
