ibute so here is the boy with a topic that has interested him since moving here have you seen totoro he might look like a big bunny to you but not to me totoro is a movie from japan it s ok if you haven t seen it ok now it s beth again the boy would love to hear from you in the comments about totoro or anything else he looks forward to writing more posts and will probably keep me motivated to write more myself as well my first movie theater in tokyo december 13 2014 beth leave a comment last night i went to the movies for the first time in over 6 months i love going to the movies even though i rarely go even in the states so i was really excited to see how the movie theater experience compared here in tokyo i went with some girlfriends to see gone girl the first english language movie that has made it here since i arrived that i was actually interested in seeing i will preface this by saying that i haven t really visited big city fancy theaters so some of this may just be par for the course even in the us if i was going to the movies in new york or san francisco or even the downtown theaters in portland for the most part but here are the things that stood out 1 the ticket price was slightly higher 1800 yen which in my mind is about 18 but in reality is less right now since the dollar is strong compared to the yen but the concessions were much more reasonable than i m used to i paid 600 yen for a small popcorn and soda combo which was plenty or i could have sized up to medium for only 670 yen 2 we got to reserve our seats this was probably my favorite part this meant that even though it was opening night we didn t need to rush to the theater early to try and snag good seats 3 the theater was really nice with steep graded seats so there was no worry about a tall head in front of you blocking your view it was also immaculate both before and after the movie everyone brought their garbage out with them and right outside the door there were three movie theater staff taking our trays from us and sorting the trash into plastics combustibles and food scraps 4 people were soooo quiet our group was chatting before the movie started but we were the only ones we quieted down during the previews and managed only a few hushed whispers during the movie but couldn t help ourselves once the credits were rolling but we were the only ones making a sound 5 actually nobody even moved as the credits started up we were a little anxious to get out of there as it was almost midnight and we were all moms who had to get up with kids the next morning but nobody got up in the theater until the credits were completely finished and the lights came on then everyone was up in a smooth movement and we all made our orderly way to the door quietly anyway it was such a nice peaceful movie going experience and i will be on the lookout for another english language movie to make it over here so i can go again oh and if you were wondering i enjoyed the movie but having read the book was probably a detriment in this case because if you already knew what was coming it definitely messed with the suspense the other woman in our group who had read the book felt the same way i felt like it was really well done but it moved verrrrry slowwwwwly in some parts and a lot of the music really bugged me the women who hadn t read the book were riveted though sports day november 7 2014 november 12 2014 beth leave a comment today was sports day at the kids school which was sort of like field day in the us at least i think so since we missed field day last spring at the boy s kindergarten when we moved before the end of the school year this was a fun day and we had amazing weather even more amazing since we had been worried it might be canceled due to a typhoon anyway this will be a quick post with lots of photos when it seemed like too many photos for a facebook post i thought i d just do a quick blog post instead the kids were both assigned to the green team which was nice since it made it easy for me to decide who to root for spoiler blue team won in the end but i don t think it dampened anyone s enjoyment of the day go green team little sister didn t own anything green so i made her this sporty little dress here s a link to more info about the dress on my crafty blog i think it turned out so cute so i hope it gets worn even when it s not sports day the boy wanted head to toe green so he wore his halloween peter pants and some penguin print christmas socks to complete the outfit here are a few shots of the events target practice on standby for his next event high roller speed stacking nice form running zig zag course grade 1 green team huddle telling jokes to the ring toss supervisor he hit 3 out of 4 rings the award for the event with the funniest name goes to big pants interesting egg and spoon method i rode the tokyo monorail to get to the stadium which was a fun trip i ran into a couple of other moms at the transfer so we got to ride and chat together and enjoy the view from the monorail i hitched a ride back to my neighborhood with a mom who has a car still totally amazed by the people who are willing to drive in tokyo we met up with a few other moms for a really lovely lunch at the tokyo american club and now i m off to pick the kids up from school and start our weekend tokyo trick or treat october 31 2014 beth leave a comment so last night we went trick or treating in tokyo and i ve got to tell you about it conceptually it was the same as trick or treating in the states the kids got dressed up and brought their candy collection bags around the neighborhood saying trick or treat as they went so peter pan and tinkerbell collect their candy in wine bags so what one marked difference they were warm enough with skin exposed to the elements unlike portland trick or treating which requires layers and bundling up we headed in the direction that we had heard was the trick or treat zone we live in an expat area and that s where the majority of the trick or treating takes place since it s a new idea here in japan lots of businesses welcome trick or treaters but it hasn t spread to the residential areas too much yet stopping by a local design business so in the places where it s happening people have started coming from all over tokyo to get in on the action there were so many people out just a few kids out on halloween we weren t sure how it would work since most residences are apartment buildings and you have to be buzzed in so what we found was that a few big buildings had someone letting kids into the lobbies but mostly people had set up decorations outside the building letting you know they had something to offer yes trick or treaters are welcome here when you spotted a building with decorations usually identified from afar by the huge crowd of kids surrounding it you headed there and waited your turn for a candy waiting in line for a treat we headed out a little before 6 00 and we were on our way back by 6 45 we probably found a dozen residences that were handing out candy and they were starting to run out when we left based on recommendations from the helpful facebook group i joined for expat moms in tokyo i brought some halloween candy with me and was putting handfuls into the bowls to help restock which was much appreciated and funny reverse trick or treating but candy is pretty expensive and there were just so many trick or treaters for just a few residences it was nice to give back we spotted another peter pan while grandma ann and i took the kids around colby and papa barrie stayed back to hand out candy on our front stoop they were a surprise to most trick or treaters who were just headed down our street on the way to the main event trick or treating and they ran out of candy in about 20 minutes papa barrie handing out candy to some trick or treaters they said the japanese kids were so polite carefully saying trick or treat in english and never trying to take more than one piece of candy and they were pretty excited about our american candy brought over by grandma ann and papa barrie not only were there candy bars they don t see much in japan but the pieces were also much bigger than what s usually handed out here next halloween we ll definitely be ready with the american candy the owl cafe october 14 2014 october 14 2014 beth 1 comment add it to the list of only in tokyo experiences last weekend i had coffee with the owls well it was a chai actually but you get the idea i suppose since cat cafes are catching on around the world it only makes sense that tokyo has moved on to socializing with other types of animals our new best friends here s how an owl cafe its actual name is fukuro no mise experience goes 1 show up when the cafe opens to get your reservation time slots fill up pretty quickly we thought they opened at 2 00 pm so we arrived around 1 45 but it turns out that 2 00 is the weekday opening time and on saturdays they open at noon so we weren t able to get a slot until 5 00 you pay for your seat when you make the reservation so make sure to have cash on you it was jpy 2 000 about 20 bucks per person which includes your coffee or tea or you can get a beer or wine for a small upcharge 2 return 5 minutes before your appointed time to be let into the cafe the hostess will call your party s name when you can go in each reservation is for one hour 3 you walk past a row of owls leashed to a stand another group of owls in a cage and a few owls in small cubbies to find your seat in the small kitschy shabby cafe there s room for maybe a dozen people at a time 6 around the bar and another 6 at a small table couch there are little owl crafts and souvenirs around the place available for sale and there s a tv in the corner playing harry potter movies with the sound turned off hi hedwig the place is really really not about being a cafe they give you a cup of coffee covered with saran wrap that is stamped with an owl picture so that an owl doesn t accidentally crap in your cup but you are definitely there for the owls 4 the hostess shows how to handle the owls and what to do and not do on fridays this presentation is also made in english we were there on a saturday so it was all in japanese but she demonstrates everything so it s pretty easy to follow they also have a laminated card with the instructions in english in case you missed anything 5 now you re ready to hold an owl you stand by the owl you want to hold and a cafe employee will unhook the leash from the bar and give it to you to hold my first choice owls they will put the owl either on your arm or your shoulder depending on your preference you can hold it and snuggle with it or take pictures no flash and when you re ready the employee will take it from you hi buddy you are free to repeat with as many owls as you like 6 there are some owls that are just for looking at some are crabby some haven t completed their training and some are babies those you are allowed to pat on the head baby hedwig only for head pats the owls that you can hold are very well behaved there are lots of species from tiny elf owls up to great horned owls 7 towards the end of your hour you sit down to drink your coffee and souvenirs are handed out for our group the hostess showed us a range of owl themed items and told us to raise our hands when we saw something we wanted this was a nice surprise included in the cost there were things like owl printed hankies small plush owls and owl charm bracelets i think i got the major score of the night this owl tote bag so this experience was really strange i was pretty giddy the whole time it was just so weird and cool gotta do the tokyo peace fingers like with any caged wild animal situation i felt a little sad about it too what did the owls think about all of this are they miserable their faces seem so expressive with those giant eyes and i have to say that some of them seemed to be enjoying themselves like this guy who kept snuggling me hellooooo i wore my owl shirt for the occasion getting friendly and some seemed pretty grumpy and others were sleepy which made sense given that it was only 5 00 pm and they d been on duty since noon they are nocturnal right and then there was this guy who horked up some mouse bones on my foot right after i took hold of him owl pellet maker oh and get this there were price tags on some of the owl cages you know in case the tote bag or plush owls weren t enough for you and you wanted to take one home i m for sale that price tag you see in the upper right corner yup that s jpy 470 000 or about 4 700 us dollars i guess when you consider that a kitten at the pet shop near our house is over 1000 and puppies run from 2 4k it s not an outrageous price for an exotic pet can you imagine having an owl for a pet i think the visit to the cafe was enough for me butter shortage october 7 2014 beth leave a comment i have noticed that on my last few trips to the grocery store the butter shelf has been empty i still had butter at home so i haven t been too worried about it i just like to have plenty well today while the salted butter was still missing there were several boxes of unsalted butter on the shelf along with a note in japanese that i couldn t read i happily put three boxes in my basket what i have been craving cookies at the register though the friendly checker told me well mimed that i could only buy one box she had to put the other two back so i m assuming there must be some sort of shortage because it s never been a problem for me to buy multiple boxes of butter in the past leave me alone they re small it s only 7 ounces people i looked it up online and it sounds like indeed there has been a dwindling milk supply leading to less availability of certain dairy products including butter but not to worry japan has ordered an emergency supply of butter that is apparently set to arrive sometime this autumn in time for holiday baking phew we must be reaching the end of the supply and will be anxiously awaiting this emergency import however this situation makes me very nervous will i be able to have the butter i need to get me through the fall and winter i will have to buy it one box at a time and start storing it in the freezer this did get me thinking though about one of the ways that japan is different than america my first instinct upon seeing the limited number of boxes of butter on the shelf were to pile them all in my basket so that i had all the butter for meeeeee but in japan each customer gets a little bit of butter and less people have to go without i didn t have a specific recipe that i was baking i didn t need to bring home more than 7 oz of butter but even if i had i can appreciate the sentiment that when there isn t enough to go around it s not fair for someone to take it all posts navigation older posts follow blog via email enter your email address to follow this blog and
