how to save seeds and in the process learned how seeds are legit the most important aspect of successfully growing a garden there are a lot of non profits that focus on non perishable food pantries saving produce from being discarded and redistributing and cooking fresh meals for those who need them all amazing food going where it needs to go today but what about the food for tomorrow how do we ensure that we can keep feeding ourselves and our community that s where seeds come in my non profit exists to help people obtain food security for the future by saving seeds from plants that grew in your own environment with your own schedule resources and ability those plants are now passing down the genetics and what they learned to thrive in your environment to their off spring the more often you save those seeds and repeat this process the more fruitful your plants will be the next time you start those seeds i teach classes in person all around my city about starting and saving seeds and a few other related subjects in between to do my part in helping fight food insecurity i am available here on tumblr to help with any questions you have and am the moderator of the tumblr seed swap community i sometimes write long articles about growing food and seeds and post on here so keep an eye out if you re interested in learning more about tomorrow s garden mission check out the website i m also more than happy to help guide you through setting up seed swaps in your city i am always a dm away and my asks are always open gardening gardenblr home garden homegrown grow food food garden gargelyfloof118 follow oh oh i m about to have a massive sneezing fit gargelyfloof118 done and no sneezing gargelyfloof118 and done one is lilacs in sugar and one in vodka the sugar one is essentially finished i need to shake it often and possibly let it dry out at some point because the sugar will pull moisture from the lilac flowers but otherwise i don t need to mess with it much the vodka infusion is apparently supposed to be refreshed of flowers every couple of days for about a week maybe 2 roughly 4 times total in order to really punch the lilac flavor up i m planning on giving these as a gift to a friend who really likes lilacs but i m definitely going to keep a little to try maybe some simple southern tea cakes or sugar cookies i d love a few suggestions on what to bake bonus buddy that i found at the end gargelyfloof118 round 2 of lilac extract hasn t been so lucky i didn t sneeze but my whole face is heavy and stuffed from the smell 8 20 tomorrowsgardennc reblogged plantyhamchuk danikriatura follow the fbi cut the phone lines during the 1977 disability rights sit in then they turned off the hot water they locked the doors from the outside one hundred and fifty people were trapped on the fourth floor half of them used wheelchairs the government assumed they would leave kitty cone was thirty three she had muscular dystrophy her muscles were failing but her logistics were flawless she knew how to organize people the federal government had promised to sign regulations protecting disabled americans from discrimination the policy was known as section 504 they printed the promise on paper then they stalled without a signature it was just typography the protesters entered the regional health education and welfare building in san francisco on a tuesday morning they took the elevators to the director s office they brought sleeping bags and catheters they informed the staff they were not leaving until the law was signed by sunset the police surrounded the exits kitty sat near the windows she organized the floor plan she assigned committees for security and sanitation she kept her medication in a small cooler according to federal memorandums released decades later the strategy to end the occupation relied on medical attrition the building was not equipped for long term habitation the fbi calculated that a population requiring ventilators specialized diets and daily medical aides would voluntarily evacuate if the environment became sufficiently hostile they instituted a blockade the blockade went into effect immediately no food deliveries allowed no medical supplies permitted through the lobby guards stood at the main doors checking identification kitty s muscles deteriorated faster under the physical strain she couldn t walk when the phone lines went dead the fourth floor lost contact with the press the government waited for the quiet kitty dropped to the floor she realized the barricades were designed for standing adults the police had blocked the hallways at waist height they hadn t blocked the linoleum the floors were covered in cigarette ash and spilled coffee she dragged her body through it she crawled under the barricades to reach the restricted elevator shafts and unguarded offices she carried notes in her pockets she found a single working payphone the fbi missed she called the local news desks she called the mayor s office she crawled back when her arms failed someone pulled her by her ankles the black panthers heard the news reports they crossed the police lines with hot meals the fbi could not stop them without a riot they shut off the elevators so she crawled the occupation lasted twenty five days it remains the longest non violent occupation of a federal building in american history on april 28 the secretary of hew signed the regulations without a single alteration the protesters left the building the next morning they went back to their apartments the rehabilitation act regulations laid the groundwork for every accessibility law that followed the hew building still stands on united nations plaza the elevators run on a schedule the doors are heavy glass kitty cone the woman who crawled under the barricades source kitty cone s oral history bancroft library verified via national museum of american history some details summarized for brevity 16 3 185 3 834 tomorrowsgardennc reblogged the habitat ring sioltach follow if there s one good thing that s been happening lately it s that so many new people have been asking for pollinator and wildlife plants like 6 5 in 10 people that come in either ask for them or are open to taking a few home native plants by name haven t reached the same level but we ve gone from 1 person asking a week to 3 or 4 now my grumpy ass boss is noticing the demand and will have to find a grower for them all is not lost sioltach it s not just plants for the bees and butterflies someone asked for flowers that attract bats something in the world is healing 131 325 tomorrowsgardennc reblogged worrywart gardening follow 2026 garden week 3 it s so hot this week but we have one or two nights that will be in the low 40s i decided to transplant my seedlings in the ground now but i didn t take very good pictures when i was finished my tomatoes are so small they ve put on some thickness in their stems since i put them outside last wednesday thursday so hopefully they ll keep that growth spurt going now that they re in the ground i gave the tomatoes and peppers each a cache of tomato fertilizer further down in their holes for their roots to find that will help too i gave both cucumbers general fertilizer but their leaves have gotten noticeably bigger so they re moving right along i have extra seedlings i m going to hang onto them just in case the transplanted tomatoes don t make it in the next week i also did not water after transplanting both because it was so hot and because the soil underneath the surface was still cool and wet from all of the rain we ve been getting there s more coming in the next two days and all through the weekend and next week worrywart gardening i know i shouldn t expect much after a couple of days two very hot days one afternoon shower and two cool nights and two and a half days of rain ahead but the tomatoes concern me the tomato plants just look so small meanwhile the cucumbers are steadily making progress they aren t the least bothered from the transplanting even the cucumbers still in pots continue to grow i need to find homes for them soon the basils even have made small progress since regrowth although their bottom leaves look distressed the peppers are just as concerning as the tomatoes as far as progress they re bigger but they haven t made new growth in so long the mustard seeds are very prolific even if the bugs have been eagerly eating at them the plants don t seem bothered the biggest achievement tonight is weeding within the fencing around the bed look at the difference just from monday i had enough weeds to fill a wheelbarrow weeds will be a challenge this year especially on this side of the garden they love the rain tomorrow i plan to go back and do more weeding in the pathways around my bed i m trying not to do too much at once next week i ll tackle the orchard corner 3 8 tomorrowsgardennc reblogged a substantial trash pile 7sghost reblogged artofmaquenda follow another bird surprised me at work i took out this crate to pot new plants and well i guess not p 8 100 329 tomorrowsgardennc reblogged rinreader follow what am i doing wrong with citruses 4 year old trees in pots kumquat grapefruit meyer lemon and yet they always flower a bunch and then the flowers fall off repotting doesn t help adding compost manure fertilizer doesn t help hand pollinating doesn t help obsessively checking soil moisture doesn t help at best i get a few baby fruits to get excited about before they also dry up and fall off why is this happening is it maybe too hot too much sun i honestly have never had any luck growing any sort of edible plant in pots should i just plant them in the ground and hope frost doesn t kill them tomorrowsgardennc the fact you are getting flowers is good that means everything else you are doing is perfect so no need to fret so the issue is something along the pollination or the age quite a lot of fruit trees won t actually fruit until 5 to 8 years of age avocado is 15 years until they fruit it s just like humans can t write within their first few years because they gotta get used to other things first that being said let s still do a little checklist for troubleshooting skip hand pollinating remove the human factor put them outside and let those born to pollinate do their thing same with watering are you using tap water instead of rainwater that can make a massive difference and a lot less fertilizer needed mother nature always provides and us humans always over worry repotting often could lead to a lot of energy being used in root growth instead of fruiting each tree has different needs for root space so make sure that s what you got and leave it be for a year or two i personally have learned that if it says dwarf variety that means it will not fruit when put in the ground because all it does is produce amazing roots and doesn t know when to stop look up your exact variety for the exact space it needs for roots and no touchy since you are in zone 9 then your chances of a deep frost are low before planting in the ground research and possibly already invest in how you would protect them in case it does happen so you are not rushing at the last second along with everyone else and the one thing that ll be perfect to protect is is sold out happens all the time but trees are different than annuals they are an investment so do anti frost freeze investment when people are least buying it so you re ready for climate change to fuck it all anything else i ve forgotten let us know gardenblr garden question homegrown fruit trees plantblr gardening 3 11 tomorrowsgardennc reblogged oh he grows follow rose bouquet olivia rose austin since it s going to rain saving self plug but not that kind of plug 2 5 tomorrowsgardennc reblogged ahedderick teepeecider follow watercore is a trait that has been bred out of commercial apple varieties because it reduces the ability to chill store apples for 6 months and aesthetically is not pleasing to western eyes it s from an accumulation of sorbitol inside and between the cells sorbitol is the sugar alcohol that makes pears taste sweet and perry from pears too as it s not metabolised by yeasts watercore seems to be yet another trait that has been sacrificed at the altar of western tastes however other cultures favour these differences and celebrate them watercore is sought after in japan due to the sweetness it brings normally a tree transports sorbitol from the leaves to the apple in which the fruit cells then convert it into fructose with watercore sorbitol is translocated to the fruit faster than it can be processed because the cells cannot absorb the excess sorbitol it leaks into the intracellular spaces by the osmotic pressure gradient across the cell wall this fluid filled space reduces light scattering making the flesh look glassy translucent or water soaked environmental factors like high daytime sun heat combined with low nighttime temperatures as well as over maturity and calcium deficiency accelerate sorbitol production sorbitol is the primary product of photosynthesis in apples and makes up the vast majority about 60 80 of the carbohydrates exported from the leaves to the fruit apples watercore sorbitol 8 28 tomorrowsgardennc reblogged only weed
