how to save seeds and in the process learned how seeds are legit the most important aspect of successfully growing a garden there are a lot of non profits that focus on non perishable food pantries saving produce from being discarded and redistributing and cooking fresh meals for those who need them all amazing food going where it needs to go today but what about the food for tomorrow how do we ensure that we can keep feeding ourselves and our community that s where seeds come in my non profit exists to help people obtain food security for the future by saving seeds from plants that grew in your own environment with your own schedule resources and ability those plants are now passing down the genetics and what they learned to thrive in your environment to their off spring the more often you save those seeds and repeat this process the more fruitful your plants will be the next time you start those seeds i teach classes in person all around my city about starting and saving seeds and decided to transplant my seedlings in the ground now but i didn t take very good pictures when i was finished my tomatoes are so small they ve put on some thickness in their stems since i put them outside last wednesday thursday so hopefully they ll keep that growth spurt going now that they re in the ground i gave the tomatoes and peppers each a cache of tomato fertilizer further down in their holes for their roots to find that will help too i gave both cucumbers general fertilizer but their leaves have gotten noticeably bigger so they re moving right along i have extra seedlings i m going to hang onto them just in case the transplanted tomatoes don t make it in the next week i also did not water after transplanting both because it was so hot and because the soil underneath the surface was still cool and wet from all of the rain we ve been getting there s more coming in the next two days and all through the weekend and next week worrywart gardening i know i shouldn t expect much after a couple of days two very hot days one afternoon shower and two cool nights and two and a half days of rain ahead but the tomatoes concern me the tomato plants just look so small meanwhile the cucumbers are steadily making progress they aren t the least bothered from the transplanting even the cucumbers still in pots continue to grow i need to find homes for them soon the basils even have made small progress since regrowth although their bottom leaves look distressed the peppers are just as concerning as the tomatoes as far as progress they re bigger but they haven t made new growth in of fruit trees won t actually fruit until 5 to 8 years of age avocado is 15 years until they fruit it s just like humans can t write within their first few years because they gotta get used to other things first that being said let s still do a little checklist for troubleshooting skip hand pollinating remove the human factor put them outside and let those born to pollinate do their thing same with watering are you using tap water instead of rainwater that can make a massive difference and a lot less fertilizer needed mother nature always provides and us humans always over worry repotting often could lead to a lot of energy being used in root growth instead of fruiting each tree has different needs for root space so make sure that s what you got and leave it be for a year or two i personally have learned that if it says dwarf variety that means it will not fruit when put in the ground because all it does is produce amazing roots and doesn t know when to stop look up your exact variety for the exact space it needs for roots and no touchy since you are in zone 9 then your chances of a deep frost are low before planting in the ground research and possibly already invest in how you would protect them in case it does happen so you are not rushing at the last second along with everyone else and the one thing that ll be perfect to protect is is sold out happens all the time but trees are different than annuals they are an investment so do anti frost freeze investment when people are least buying it so you re ready for climate change to fuck it all anything else i ve
