like for me growing up like yeah i realize that your childhood was like that and i m sorry that you were treated that way but don t act like that s how it is for everyone i was very much seen as one of the guys growing up i went to boys nights with the guys which typically consisted of very masculine activities i had gay cis dudes hit on me i never once was seen as anything other than a dude guys never once mistreated me or saw me as anything other than a man even through university i was seen as a man to the point where my university friends were shocked when i came out to them as a trans woman i was even treated as one of the safe ones all through high school by the girls i hung out with i had an all female friend group that i hung out with and gossiped with and was allowed to hang out with them in and out of school because friendship with me never came with the possibility that i was gonna make things weird and try to fuck them i showed no interest in dating them and treated them like any other person they literally called me a girl s guy so your experience isn t universal and i really wish people would stop acting like their trauma is standard because it s not transfemme shelterdog and then there s my husband who hated being a girl hated femininity was bullied by girls growing up never had any friends aside from a few guys in high school and was never accepted as a girl by girls trans experiences aren t universal gh0st note they truly aren t because i for one actually grieve the boy i used to be even though that isn t who i am anymore i mourn what could have been and yet i m excited for what is going to be i felt fine being a boy and was very much seen as one of the bros once i finally found a friend group even if they still treat me as one of the bros but that s a separate matter i personally had very little trauma surrounding my identity growing up as a young lad even if i constantly felt out of place just like being trans is a spectrum so is trauma no one s trauma is the same and you cannot presume what other people have gone through vaspider i have such complicated feelings about my body and gender and growing up like i wouldn t be who i am if i hadn t been an oldest daughter and an oldest of three sisters in a very conservative rural home i loved being successfully pregnant i hated everything else about having a uterus once we were done working together i wanted it gone there is not one true way to be trans any more than there is one true way to be a man a woman or non binary my brother and i had a loooong conversation about that once we both came out bc like having been that thing was important to both of us but so was no longer being that thing and it felt shitty to me to deny our sister s life experience too by saying sorry that didn t actually happen we were never sisters a polite melody i often see the screenshotted opinion end up not just stopping there but creating a that s how i was treated growing up which means that actually everyone knew i was a girl and was treating me accordingly and so for trans men and mascs they must have the opposite experience that everyone knew they were a boy and so treated them accordingly actually though i see a lot of my experience in how the oop framed her experiences i was strongly ostracized by my peers long before i could understand where the ostracism came from ultimately kids pick up on nonconformity and some treat those kids who aren t conforming in some way with extreme hostility this is not specific to being seen as a girl it s a product of being seen as being not properly x gender i don t doubt there are trans women trans men nonbinary people across all sorts of presentations and identities intersex people kids of colour and disabled kids regardless of gender fat kids too all have experiences like that just like i also don t doubt any of the people above me describing their experiences differently as having managed to be accepted gender wise by their peers or for whom their prior identity was also truly them as much as their current identity is truly them now because no two trans people have the exact same experiences and i ve heard so much variety in trans experience that i m hardly surprised anymore when i find someone speaking to a fully different experience than i ve ever heard of before transcyberism yeah ditto i always felt like i was bad at being a girl that the other girls just knew something i didn t and were naturally more skilled in makeup fashion etc and when i was a young teenager i even tried to compensate by getting very into fem styles doing big wingtip eyeliner etc i still didn t feel good at it but i thought that if i just put enough effort in maybe no one would notice and i would be like everyone else but i remember when i was a little younger than that maybe twelve or so my mom who knits had made me this gorgeous camisole with shiny green yarn i think it might have been a silk blend in fact with a very intricate pattern and lots of lace work and i thought it was so pretty and when i put it on for the first time she sort of frowned and said oh we need to buy you a bra to wear under stuff like this because it was snug fitting and made my newly developing breasts a bit obvious and because it was a camisole and had such thin straps normal bras would poke out under them and i wasn t ever able to wear it outside because my mom didn t want my bra to be showing and i remember that was the first time my body ever felt really wrong i wished i had never grown anything on my chest so i could just wear whatever shirts i wanted i realized i would have to dress a whole different and specific way because of how my body looked because of the taboos around people seeing certain parts of my body and it was like a whole world closed off to me and that new way of dressing was laden with all these social expectations that i didn t like or understand and everyone seemed to intuitively understand them except me and that s just how it was from then on getting my period a few months after that was my first experience with dissociation i just straight up pretended it wasn t happening didn t tell anyone for a couple of years actually and would just wad up toilet paper and shove that in my underwear instead of getting real pads because i didn t want anyone to know i knew what periods were i had been given proper sex ed i just wanted to live in a world where it wasn t happening to me and whatever i was going through was just some kind of temporary inconvenience that would go away if i ignored it long enough i remember the first time it came because my mom and i were on a trip to boston and i didn t want to ruin the whole trip with it i also remember clogging several toilets over the years because i would flush my improvised toilet paper pads instead of throwing them in the garbage because again i didn t want anyone to know i don t even really know why i was hiding it exactly it just made me feel deeply ashamed and upset to think about so i thought about it as little as possible i think it was another case of not wanting to change the way i lived my life for the sake of my body functions having social implications it wasn t really the bleeding i minded so much or the shape of my chest it was dealing with what they entailed and my fear that i wouldn t deal with it correctly and then be marked an outsider or a failure so much of what i read from trans women talking about being girlfailures or relating to those types of fictional characters feels relatable to me as well but in a way that reminds me of myself as a kid anxieties about being bad at being a girl occupied so much of my thoughts and i think was probably part of why my female peers tended to reject me although the neurodivergence and difficult home life didn t help i often got the sense that to be a girl was to try to live up to these impossible standards that i would never get and the thing is i also know plenty of cis women who felt some of the same ways growing up which is why i still identify with used to be a girl and maybe you know some of those cis women might not be as cis as they think sure but i don t think that s true of all the women i ve spoken to who have similar experiences especially not the trans women as previously discussed who are usually very certain they re women and have basically always spent a very long time thinking about why they feel that way i think the truth is that gender roles are pretty complicated and have a lot of baggage attached no matter who you are and everyone navigates it differently i think these kinds of narratives are more akin to spiritual journeys than anything deeply personal and at times incommunicable which particular narrative
