could turn back time 45 years or so and find yourself once again in any of the dickensian school dormitories in a once grand rothschild mansion in the heart of leafy hertfordshire what you would see well in the moonlight for the tall sash windows are curtain less and draughty in the early hours long after the girly giggles have subsided sue pennick jenny bennett sue cock remains of the illicit midnight feasts have been stashed away and the transistor radios playing the latest hits from the pirate ship radio caroline are silenced and secreted under the pillows you would see several young fresh faced girls tucked up in bed under the regulation candlewick bedspreads sleeping soundly you would just be able to make out under each bed a pair of fluffy slippers neatly lined up on the greasy bare floorboards and at the foot the carefully folded dressing gown all ready for the morning wake up bell and the sprint to the ice cold bathrooms in the sparse rooms there s little else to tell the girls apart other than the sorely missed family members watching over each child from the single permitted photo frame on their night stand if you listened closely you would hear the heavy breathing of their exhausted little bodies bodies that had by day been regularly and un naturally stretched twisted turned pummelled and pounded into submission for these are no ordinary young girls and this is no ordinary boarding school this is tring a highly specialised school for the performing arts where whether a drama music contemporary dance or ballet student each pupil is expected to excel in all artistic and academic disciplines in order to keep their privileged place at this highly selective vocational institution and go on to enjoy an illustrious career from l back row sue stewart sue amanda chiarletti ghislaine ross davies jennifer lonsdale jane johnson there are only a handful of such schools in britain and the majority of pupils are keenly aware of their privileged position having been largely hand picked for their individual talents and potential contribution to the world of arts entertaiment they know how fortunate they are to have this unique opportunity to pursue their dreams individual dreams and aspirations of one day seeing their name in lights in a west end theatre or on broadway or in the glossy royal opera house programmes dreams that spur them on each gruelling day to reach ever greater heights of achievement regardless of any personal sacrifice or the physical cost to their young developing bodies carole freeman sue pennick sue cock that said there are also a few with totally different aspirations who are either obliged to follow their pushy parent s dream rather than their own or saddest of all are those whose schooling away from home is merely a convenience in stark contrast to the usually happy tring pupil such girls are desperately unhappy feeling often unable to compete they spend their days counting the hours till they can escape from the rigorous daily routines they re unwillingly subjected to and the long lonely nights of silently sobbing into their pillows whatever their reasons for being there deep unbreakable bonds are being formed between all the girls the daily repetitive regime is brutal competition is rife and necessary but all emotions so keenly felt are volatile and openly shared probably the very last thought in their young minds is that of the very distant future beyond the realisation of their dreams a future when one day they might be considered old with their careers long since behind them now i invite you to fast forward 45 years or so to an elegant flat in hampstead on a cold but sunny november afternoon gathered around a cosy fire are 15 or so of those same giggly school girls sue pennick gisele yoh eileen mckenna celia head it s only to the outside world that are they are no longer girls but middle aged ladies inside they themselves still feel they re 15 and refreshingly in this age obsessed with image and youth any inevitable exterior changes are actually totally irrelevant any nervousness about the odd wrinkle or extra kilo or two is soon dispersed by the excited chatter which is incessant giggles and the shrieks of joy that continue to punctuate every sentence that generally begins with remember when maddie pritchard julia gray friendships pick up easily from where they left off these are very special ladies who have lived a lifetime and have a lifetime of stories to tell the highs and lows the triumphs and the tragedies between them you name it they ve been through it all of it and all the while acutely aware of those amongst them who sadly never got to make it this far they re always in our hearts of those that have some have soared the heights of their dreams and enjoyed dazzling careers most haven t some have married raised families and enthusiastically share photos of their grandchildren some haven t and don t some have battled serious illness some have lost loved ones far too early sue pennick henrietta hopwood some have been luckier than others several care for sick spouses children and their elderly parents many do so no longer the scars remain but the support for and from each other is overwhelming the sharing of joys and tears is generous genuine and constant and we re thankful too for every reunion that brings another long lost sister back into the fold welcome jenny jane johnson it was so lovely to see you after all these years jane johnson mary self julia gray henrietta hopwood we may indeed have been privileged all those years ago but personally i feel far more privileged now to belong to such an amazingly strong and vibrant group of women real women individuals all the all encompassing warmth in the room is palpable etched onto every smile and extended through every hug even reaching those who through the wonders of modern technology aka skype linked up to share our love and laughter first hand from their homes hundreds of miles away lovely to speak to you amanda and carole so if i could turn back time no thank s cher but if it s all the same to you i m well over over the wrong side of fifty i m fit ish a bit ok then a lot flabby i ve worked through all fifty shades of grey at the salon not in the book i hasten to add i m feisty oh most definitely fearless bring it on but best of all i have the most fabulous friends touch fairly regularly via facebook especially through the private group arts educational tring 50 s 60 s but quite a few of you don t and we d hate you to miss out so here s the latest news so far please don t hesitate to contribute too if you have news you d like to share firstly important news and one for your diary our next reunion gisele yoh and yee wa foo have kindly offered to organise and host our next reunion on november 22nd 2015 at yee wa s home in north london pm me for exact times location etc i do hope many of you will be able to make it it s been ages since our last get together sadly this time i don t think miss sergeant will be able to join us recovering as she is from her recent stroke neither will miss pettinger who has now moved permanently into a care home in her home town in norfolk following her two hip replacements and sadly a gradual decline into dementia i m sure i m speaking for us all when i say how much we will miss them but we ll send them photos and i ll pass your details on to them yesterday i attended a huge reunion for the arts london 70 s leavers photo judith kelly beautifully organised it began with a tour of the now chiswick based london school after the introduction and warm welcome from the current head jane harrison we were shown around the fabulous facilities the many new studios and classroom the impressive tv and film department wouldn t we have loved that and finally thanks to a 3 5 million pound donation from andrew lloyd webber a magnificent new theatre being the only school currently able to offer both academic and vocational training from seven years right through to degree level and with it s level of excellence across all subjects the arts educational school was recently voted best school of the year by the independent schools association then it was on to the london welsh rugby club kew where the main function was held there was an enormous turnout but disappointingly for me anyway most were from later years there was only a handful from our time peta cooke sebright denise watson metliss liz crowther theresa lucas petrina langford tate susan zalcman janet snell trevor wood and steve wright among the few others i recognised and chatted to were christine wickham arlene philips finola hughes and anne marie khachik newland the absolute highlight of the day for me was meeting up with my old art teacher from the london school jo mills wallace and our wonderful pottery teacher from tring jeremy cragg both of whom speaking personally along with the late mrs wheeler had a such profound influence on my life and career as an artist other news i don t have very much to report so i m looking forward to hearing all your news at the next reunion i know new grandchild have arrived caring for elderly parents has kept some of us on our toes birthdays anniversaries and achievements have been celebrated and sadly illnesses our own and of loved ones have been battled and even more sadly lost our lives go on busily but i know we all hold each other in our thoughts and hearts for some life is a just a little more busy than for others virginia mull has been delighting us on facebook with updates and photos of her wonderful new restoration project following her recent move into to an historic fenland cottage carrying out much of the renovation work herself she continues to amaze us with her artistic flair and no mean ability not to mention her energy to watch her charming old house slowly being transformed into a warm cosy and beautiful home is just wonderful so inspiring i hope you ll join me in wishing her many happy years there once she finally gets to put her feet up and enjoy the fruits of her labour one final note and another one for the diary for those able to by yvonne ayoub reply a few weeks ago a wonderful reunion took place at the mitre pub craven terrace london w2 beautifully organised by ex tringite sarah ellard styles fitzgerald 62 66 it was attended by members of the very active facebook group arts educational tring 50 s 60 s which now has over 108 members from all around the globe it s a closed group but everyone who attended between those years is very welcome to join out of the 25 that managed to attend some traveling great distances from as far away as israel and france there was only a few from our year 69 70 namely mary self celia head yee wah foo eileen mckenna and yours truly the majority was made up of our ex seniors and any initial hesitation we might have had about entering a room filled with terrifying prefects was soon dispelled by the warm reception the squeals of delight at seeing long lost but instantly recognisable faces the spontaneous hugs and the incessant chatter and squeals of unreserved laughter that
