story snowfall in which brian s car breaks down forcing him to seek shelter and becoming involved in the fate of an anthropologist who made the mistake of stealing a sacred statue from practitioners of voodoo it s a story that starts ordinarily enough with brian s slightly self important and pompous character drawn with conviction then veers off into delightfully macabre territory the new house is even better as john and eileen discover that their desres has been built on a mount formerly known as gibbet hill it s a haunting story that builds convincingly with details filled in along the way culminating on a night of unruly storm when natural elements are used to channel the animosity of the deceased with a final twist regarding baby sarah that was as gratifying as it was unexpected the over the top characters of three matronly ladies drives the action in the tibetan box a cursed object that cannot be disposed of easily it s a deliciously written piece the wit and humour overruling any considerations of plausibility engaged couple peter and dora come to rue their visit to the island of regrets there s lovely characterisation here with the domineering dora and painfully acquiescent peter but the real horror of the story comes from the depiction of the island with its gloomy past minatory landscape and solitary dwelling the beat of the drum signals the impending death of the commander of the regiment but for colonel lawson jealousy over his young wife is the catalyst that leads to his demise this is one of those stories where if only the protagonists talked to each other a fate that seems inevitable could be easily avoided but instead they bring about their own downfall walter s 1967 collection the sin eater other scientific impossibilities contains six stories clive s interest in old churches results in him becoming the sin eater for a convicted murderer at death s door but his attempts to get at the truth behind the murder charge lead into a spiritual form of double jeopardy there s a novel idea at the story s heart and it s spun out into something quite substantial and entertaining albeit the end twist felt a little forced an epistolary story as the title suggests dearest clarissa consists of a series of letters from julia who is in a mental health facility recovering from the loss of her unborn child to her more beautiful and clever sister whom she adores though the reader can see how she is being manipulated it s a clever conceit and in some aspects reminded me of dementia 13 though at the same time it all felt a little too fanciful for credibility a scientific impossibility has a scientific dispute resolved by supernatural means to the chagrin of the scientists involved it all felt rather obvious from a plot perspective but the banter and interplay between the various experts was highly engaging offering us an insightful look at the cut and thrust world of scientific discourse in a question of time a group of art students are intrigued by a painting with one of their number claiming knowledge of the piece s provenance it s a slight but wonderfully readable story with the camaraderie and rivalry of the students put over with panache justus suffers from arachnophobia and when the spider turns up in his flat seeking help from the woman he used and spurned turns out to be a really bad idea while the horror element here is rather obvious and in your face the story is elevated by the portrayal of the caddish justus and hard hearted isabella who finally learns to put her own interests first there s a humorous slant to exorcism as the spirit of simon snipe comes back for revenge on benjamin shrubsole who murdered him and then bedded his wife it s a deliciously tongue in cheek piece with witty dialogue between snipe and shrubsole while susannah is somewhat put out by her ex s actions davy jones s tale other supernatural stories 1971 opens with the tale walter claimed as her favourite of all those she wrote davy jones s tale is an account of star crossed lovers and how the spectral revenge of a wrecked ship descends on the present day crew of a lifeboat it s a wide ranging piece with a wealth of maritime tradition to add a sense of verisimilitude one that touches on the way in which local jobs are going in the face of technological change and how sibling rivalry can undo a man while you can t help but feel some sympathy for davy jones whose actions were done for the best of reasons even though they also served his own ends the hare lures karlheinz to his doom in a story of clandestine politics set on the border between east and west germany during the cold war it s a strange story one where the reader can see what is happening though the protagonist is being led by his dick and ultimately rather enjoyable for all that it stretches plausibility on holiday the heskeths have a spectral encounter when they get lost in the mist the story is entirely predictable albeit the author does have a trick or two up her sleeve when it comes to the big reveal so the reader is not left feeling short changed the lift is probably the strangest story in the collection with a secret agent on the run blundering into historical scenarios that shine a different light on his own problems the capsule scenes are beautifully described like a series of cameos from vincent price movies but i didn t get the feel that they added up to anything greater than the sum of their parts my favourite story in the whole book is the street of the jews in which michael mayer visits a small german town to arrange a tourism deal but learns rather more about the wartime past than he is comfortable with it is a tour de force of storytelling one where the supernatural element is only a catalyst for the revelation of bigotry and anti semitism that lies at the story s heart you cannot help but cheer for michael as he walks away from the horrific steiner family who find it so hard to keep their bigotry and sense of unfairness in check and not realising he has jewish ancestry expect him to share their feelings about those people am i wrong to feel that it might just be relevant to present day britain when her baby turns out to be backward sarah becomes convinced that another woman has swapped children hushaby baby presenting us with a variation on the changeling theme it s a clever piece one that builds well and with excellent characterisation of sarah and husband bob who is driven into the arms of another woman through her actions come and get me other uncanny invitations 1974 is walter s fourth collection title piece come and get me is the story of an isolated house now falling into ruin and the act of military dishonour that once took place there this is very much a haunted house tale one with a sinister side to it with revelations in the present day revealing what happened in the past and a gratifying climax jeremy sparrow learns the truth behind the legend of the concrete captain a landmark on the cornish coast but the story has a sting in its tail the central conceit here struck me as a bit fanciful but allowing for that the story is entertaining enough with a rich atmosphere in the thing teacher roswitha has a horrific encounter with an entity lurking on a cable car the story building well and leaving an agreeable note of ambiguity at the end jennifer mallory is returning home from hospital with the travelling companion but it s all part of a spiritual drama to bring her to the realisation of her true situation in a quiet beautifully paced story that doesn t set a foot wrong in the spirit of the place a woman come to view a newly discovered fresco has an encounter with the numinous it s a story where we have an overbearing academic running the show but the insights into how people link to the land and the specialness of that bond add an extra dimension to what would otherwise be a fairly ordinary ghost story when children are being brutally murdered the story s protagonist who is on a sort of neighbourhood watch encounters prendergast who is supposed to be dead convincing the police that a vampire is active though there is a twist in the tale it s a cunningly wrought piece one that lays out its clues and leaves the reader to reach their own conclusion before deftly pulling the rug out from under our feet naïve rose and her gold digging husband to be try to hurry on the moment of her inheritance but thanks to the grandfather clock things don t turn out as they d hoped this is a rather obvious story but saved by the larger than life characters especially rose s grandfather with his strong ideas on family tradition and the cad to whom she is engaged a manipulative bastard if ever there was one finally we have dead woman other haunting experiences from 1975 miss davies is looking forward to a peaceful and pleasant retirement but the place where she has her house built is a hill named dead woman after a witch who was hung there and before long history is repeating itself this was a thoroughly enjoyable story of a curse working out in the present day and the way in which hysteria can overcome a rural community so that before long the mob with pitchforks is running about the country in the hollies and the ivy a house with an ominous history is overrun with fast growing ivy leaving its residents trapped inside this was another entertaining tale one where the seemingly ordinary nature of the menace makes it all the more chilling with references to folklore and history to reinforce the feeling of peril honeymooners mark and caroline become part of a monstrous tale when they holiday in germany near lake constantine and find that strange creatures dwell in the depths as with most of walter s stories the characterisation is a treat with mark s resentment of his domineering new wife driving the action while there are subtle hints throughout of the aquatic menace though walter has sense enough to allow room for ambiguity the little house is a wendy house in the grounds of the big house but it is haunted by the spirit of a child who died there this is another excellent ghost story one where all the pieces fit together with a pleasurable gravitas as the house s back story is revealed so soundly constructed that the slightly predictable ending doesn t really matter after a hit and run accident freda and eric are so besotted with their problems with each other that they don t realise they are trapped in their own personal hell with dual control dialogue driven this is a story that is rooted in character the two people and their antipathies brought to perfect life on the page and illustrating the old adage that hell is other people telling the bees is a tradition when somebody in the big house dies but diana s understanding leads her to doubt her husband and usher in her own death the plot elements here while fascinating in their own right don t quite fit together as well as in many of the other tales but the characters are soundly drawn with diana s fears in the forefront in parenthesis given the number of philandering and scheming men in these stories there s a certain irony in the fact that diana finds it so hard to believe she has an honest partner an actor and his wife spend christmas night in a phantom inn and wake in the morning to find themselves implicated in a murder it s a meticulously constructed ghost story with larger than life characters and a neat twist at the end which undercuts the predictability of much that had gone before a strong end to a thoroughly engaging and enjoyable collection while there s little in the spirit of the place other strange stories that is striking from a modern perspective the stories are never less than entertaining and overall this is a rewarding
