sed called roadside picnic found out there was a movie about the book and from there fell down the rabbit hole of tarkovsky s filmography and from there into slow cinema i have a list of films i want to see and i do actually have a couple of favorites like chantal akerman s jeanne dielman terence malick s tree of life and chloe zhao s nomadland this film is available on amazon prime the last time i checked its also available for free on youtube the bay this is a genuinely frightening found footage eco horror movie it s horrible and tragic and frankly and more than a little disgusting it chronicles the beginning and aftermath of a parasitic outbreak caused by steroid infused runoff from a local chicken farm into the bay of a small town this is not a loud bombastic jump scare type of movie it just matter of factly shows the lack of care and corrupt decision making by government officials that leads to the destruction of an entire town the premise sounds silly on paper about enlarged isopods that eat their victims from the inside out but the movie doesn t go for spectacle if you liked the movie contagion you might like this one i love eco horror movies but this isn t like your typical movies about killer bees and other deadly predators because it seems like such a plausible event from the greedy decisions that lead up to it to the apathetic cover up afterward in between there is all the loss of life that nobody seems to mourn or even notice this movie genuinely scared me becasue its so true to life it s like a documentary of all of jaws worst decision plot points the bay is available on tubi keeper i really liked this one i walked into this one knowing nothing at all about it beyond a very brief summary on google and the knowledge that tatyana maslany starred in it so i had absolutely no idea what to expect it was actually pretty frightening mostly because you just like the main character have no clue what s going on it s a typical looking horror movie but the plot takes a very strange turn and that s outside of some of the trippy imagery i really enjoyed this because it hit a couple of those basic fears i have that haunted me for several days after and i liked both the mystery of it and the twisted ending maslany plays liz a woman who agrees to visit her new boyfriend s country house despite the protestations of her friend who claims it s too dangerous when the new boyfriend gets called away on a medical emergency he urges her to eat the chocolate cake he bought especially for the occasion the cake is drugged but liz doesn t know that soon she starts to have bizarre images and see strange creatures and the viewer is left to determine whether or not these things are real or hallucinations including a visit from her boyfriend s creepy brother trust me when i say you will not be expecting the ending but if you re of like mind as me it will be satisfying keeper is available for rent on amazon prime vivarium oooh this one was infuriating mostly because movies where people get trapped in circumstances they find impossible to leave are definitely one of my triggers i had no idea where it was going because i walked into this one based solely on a brief description on google but after about thirty minutes or so i knew it wasn t going to end well although i continued to root for the characters long into the movie tom and gemma get trapped in a bizarre liminal space housing maze while searching for a new home and forced to take care of a strange cuckoo like boy who screeches at them when his needs don t get met she and tom try everything they can think of to escape but are told the only way they can do so is to raise the child while the place appears to be normal on a surface level the neighborhood has no signs of life beyond the two of them there are no cars no birds nor insects and no change in the weather even the clouds look fake the place looks just real enough to past a cursory inspection when you get inside it after which its too late the film perfectly captures that fake movie set feeling that some suburbs seem to have the fear comes from the dawning realization that they are trapped in this horribly bland but strangely familiar place and that escape may never be possible vivarium is available on tubi pontypoo l i mentioned this one before but it bears mentioning again this is one of my favorite non zombie zombie films grant mazzy is a former shock jock broadcasting from a church basement after being fired from his last job the movie takes place entirely in the one space passes quickly and never gets boring mchattie holds the screen nicely and his three co workers laurel ann sydney briar and their eye in the sky ken loney are no shirkers either the four of them encounter a weird disease that causes people to turn into zombie adjacent victims they re not dead and they don t try to eat you although they will rip you limb from limb mostly though they want to infect you by talking at you the disease is passed through speech causing the victims to repeat words or babble nonsense until they can find someone to pass it on and its only a matter of time until sydney mazzy and laurel ann succumb since its their job to keep talking the ending was not what i was expecting but then maybe i would have if i d read the story on which it was based tony burgess 1995 novel pontypool changes everything pontypool is available on philo which requires a subscription and as a free youtube movie final prayer this is one of those slow burn films that you think is one thing but turns out to be something entirely unexpected you think this is a movie about religion and one man who is a priest while the other is in opposition to his beliefs and their study of what they believe to be a haunted church and everything fits the idea of a haunted church up to a point this is another movie where people who are only following where the clues lead end up falling into something that s horrible and inescapable saying any more would spoil this movie for you this movie is free on both youtube and tubi honorable mentions creep this is another found footage film about a man who answers an ad to be friends with a stranger for a day things become increasingly cringe between them cuckoo after her mother s death gretchen goes to stay with her father in europe and encounters a movies nostalgia trailers 1 comment michael i went to see this with a friend and we both enjoyed the experience the audience seemed to be into it too we had a good one who sang along with the songs and oohed and aahed in all the right places i got emotional in all the right spots laughed cried bopped along to the music and hated the primary antagonist of the film joe jackson all the things you re supposed to do when you lose yourself in a movie the movie worked hard to emphasize that michael never really had a childhood or got to simply be a normal child because of his father s obsession with fame and then later on he couldn t really live a normal life because at his level of fame it just wasn t possible it also showed how he didn t really have much in common personality wise with the rest of his family all older siblings which made life very lonely for him there s a scene where michael goes to a toy store he s not thinking too deeply about it he s just there to get some toys but once shoppers realize he s there he gets swamped by fans both inside and outside the store after that we never see him doing regular things like shopping again there s another scene that s after his burn accident where he s in the hospital encountering all these children in the burn unit and decides that even though he s in pain himself he wants to bring them joy so he sings to them and brings them toys the movie accomplished its goal of just being entertaining there are some behind the scenes moments about how certain things got filmed or songs got written like beat it and thriller and i was surprised about how much i knew about michael s life but this is not a very deep movie it s mostly surface level charm which is cool because not everything needs to be a treatise or an existential philosophy like a lot of people i grew up watching michael on tv but i m gen x so i remember him as a child singing with the jackson five on shows like american bandstand and soul train which were not shown everyone is making a huge deal out of jaafar jackson as they should because he s incredible but for me it juliano valdi who was the standout as little michael and for some reason known only to the universe the guy who plays michael s bodyguard really stood out to me i don t know why i just really liked him colman domingo as joe jackson was the perfect villain some filmgoers will note the absence of certain family members like janet who is absolutely nowhere to be seen or even mentioned although latoya is there no there is no mention of the child sexual abuse allegations against michael it is my understanding that they were included in the film but had to be removed because of some type of legal nda but i didn t go to see the movie because i wanted to roll around in michael s trash i don t think anyone did the movie is basically an emotional highlight reel of the first half of michael s career and people seemed to want and need that and not another movie about yet another celebrity scandal meanwhile i have heard there will be a sequel and the allegations against him will most likely be addressed then this is not a perfect film if you re not fan of michael jackson or only want to delve into the scandals then don t bother the primary reason to go is if you re a big fan who really misses him the film hits those nostalgia buttons very hard its not a great film but it s a very good afternoon diversion scared shitless this movie makes no pretense at being anything other than its gleefully stupid self steven ogg is one of those actors you have seen somewhere else but have no idea where which works in his favor here although he doesn t disgrace himself by starring in this nutjob of a movie that is very reminiscent of the splatterfest films of the 80s like society and braindead he stars as a father to a directionless germaphobic son who decides that the boy needs to learn about the family business plumbing so he takes his son on an emergency call to fix the plumbing issues in a building where the problems are being caused by a genetically modified monster that s gotten stuck in the toilets although no one yet knows that this monster periodically reveals itself to the buildings clueless tenants for the purpose of eating them it is now up to the these two plumbers and a much smarter desk clerk played by chelsea clark to rid the building of this monster before it can grow big enough to take over the city plumber dad has all the bravery the desk clerk has the brains and the son mostly just loves his dad and wants to impress him it would have been very easy to make their relationship hateful and toxic but the writers deftly avoid that sonny is frustrated by his dad expectations but never disrespectful and his father while genuinely caring is equally frustrated their relationship is strained but not ugly which made spending time with these characters a lot more likable it s clear that the movie is pretty low budget but that doesn t diminish the fun i had watching this the monster is silly and overtop but still pretty disgusting which made all the kills kind of fun and funny most of the time the movie is predictable you have a pretty good idea of whose going to die and who isn t but every now and then the movie throws a surprise at you which is also fun i d been looking for a good goop film for a while and i d heard of this one about a year ago and thought i d check it out it finally showed up on amazon it s not a great film but there was a strong late 80s nostalgia factor and it was a diverting 75 minutes mr k i actually liked this movie although it did hit all of my deepest frustration buttons simply because of the nature of the plot crispin glover plays the hapless mr k a magician who moves into this freaky hotel to be closer to his gig location and then finds it nearly impossible to escape this is a very surreal movie and very frustrating to watch not because its bad but simply because the plot is designed to be that way one of my fun frustrations in a movie is when characters keep trying to tell other people something important but they just get ignored mr k first encounters strange people in his room under his bed in the hallways and most especially in the kitchen area where he gets roped into being a server and a chef one of my biggest issues in movies is watching people get caught up in circumstances they find impossible to avoid because of the assumptions of the people around them and because no one listens to them the people in the building are always making assumptions about him and then treating him as if he had confirmed those assumptions no matter how much he protests for example he ends up being grabbed up and taken to a dinner party while he is trying to find the missing exit at the end of the party while all the guests are running about trying to escape some type of emergency he gets swept into the kitchen working as one of its many many chefs the head chef assumes he wants his job and another chef gets mad at him for becoming the chef s daughter s new favorite none of which is true to add to this frustration level the building keeps getting smaller and smaller forcing people to move their furniture into the halls making everything feel even more claustrophobic there are strange veiny things living in the walls people are chasing him through the building and his room gets invaded by a mob of people through all of this mr k keeps trying to tell people who he actually is warn people about the building and the events occurring but no one is listening because they re all too busy assuming things the movie becomes more and more surreal until the building begins to crumble and k finally escapes through the body of some kind of marine animal the movie is frustrating to watch but still enjoyable largely on the strength of glover s performance as the much put upon mr k i did like the messaging of how he keeps trying to break away from the normalized apathy of the hotel denizens but when he tries he just keeps getting more and more entangled in their often petty shenanigans the most uncomfortable moment which might pull some people out of the movie is when the chef s daughter sexually assaults him in the supply room i had to pull back from that it was a re...
