them to bits then the violinist had a go at the other one silencing it the duo of women resumed dancing amid the refreshing calm and then were joined by a couple during an exciting encounter one of the duo abandoned her partner and joined up with the woman from the couple leaving the other two on their own it seemed as if tradition had been broken in more ways than one leaving everyone breathless from the energy and excitement in the performance one person thought it was about brexit at one point i thought it was about marriage and traditional couple relationships it seemed that the art allowed everyone to interpret it just as they wanted any tradition could be broken followed by a new beginning leave a comment june 14 2016 seeing is believing filed under uncategorized valeriabateson 3 39 pm last year the group exhibition at st john s leytonstone was a big success as one of the organisers i met with the others to find a theme open to many very different interpretations to attract the maximum number of artists katja rosenberg suggested seeing is believing after hearing news of the first detection of gravitational waves which were predicted to exist by einstein 100 years ago that seemed perfect i was excited to think about huge cosmic events such as those that caused the waves to get big enough to measure like the merging of two black holes so i painted my version of two black holes merging as i imagined it with forces far greater than anything on earth tearing the two black holes apart and reinventing them as one black holes merging then i was excited to think about other huge cosmic processes that have been observed in powerful telescopes like supernovae where stars explode and nebulae where stars are born i think this is roughly right though of course what we see now happened eons ago it is all quite mind boggling i wanted to convey the excitement of thinking about these things it was a great chance to experiment with transparent inks and opaque paints see how they would interact on wet paper how far would they explode and how far would i have to make deliberate marks the crab nebula i became more extravagant in the colours and media i used and freer in my interpretation of the incredible exploding stars and star nurseries that the hubble and other telescopes had photographed i haven t yet worked on any green and orange ones tarantula nebula this work has often taken on a life of its own surprising me when that happens it is a good day in the studio other artists have taken a tremendous variety of other approaches to this theme there will be fairies cowboys tiny men huge planets gravitational waves optical illusions and lots more i think this theme will make our show more interesting than the unthemed show we had last year at st johns like me others are responding to the challenge of the large space inside st johns the challenge of this exhibition like last year s is to find where my work and all the other artists work can best be shown in the church compatible with its use as a place of worship the leytonstone arts trail of which this exhibition is part runs from 2nd to 10th july see the website at www leytonstoneartstrail org leave a comment may 18 2016 painting portraits filed under uncategorized valeriabateson 9 43 am for some reason i always feel a little apologetic about making portraits but a good portrait is not a vanity project it has enduring power as art i think of the old master drawings in the british museum that catch something in a person that stands for all humanity rembrandt of course and raphael always stop me in my tracks transfiguration drawing by raphael in the ashmolean museum something inspires me to focus on children as they sparkle and change constantly always in motion but recently i had an opportunity to persuade grandchildren to sit still just long enough to get a series of images in my camera one of them became an oil painting in less than a day it just painted itself lizzie is at a wonderful stage of discovery and wonder when she was a bit under par her mum put on a recording of clair de lune after a few bars out of nowhere lizzie said it feels like something wonderful is about to happen i am constantly amazed at the power of music to make us feel things and since her mum had just shared this with me i could paint lizzie lizzie age 6 feeling thrilled to sit still beside her older cousin heather another one was quick to do lewis is having a great last year at primary school having been a class clown for awhile he got lucky with an inspired teacher who also loves the beautiful game those with perfect behaviour for a week are invited to play football with him after school lewis age 10 good at football and maths ah teachers one has kept me going for years that s how long it takes to learn how to draw and paint people he is soti charalambou whose own work is abstract sculpture his daughter martine is a genius portrait painter whose work is easily seen on the internet soti always says to paint with a sitter not a photo or series of photos so right and with adults you may be lucky enough to persuade them you get a more direct less fussy result somehow ron who sat for soti s lesson leave a comment november 8 2015 pumpkin pie and the glorious maryland autumn filed under uncategorized valeriabateson 5 00 pm most english people are dubious about pumpkin pie they are missing something but you have to get a good one deprived of it for years i ve just had the chance to sample some of the best on offer in maryland when visiting my sister pam pies at art gallery in dc pumpkin pie is an art form in the usa it may not look sexy but it certainly is light almost moussey but juicy not too sweet it should have a range of interesting rich warm spicy tastes and a spelt crust americans will happily drive 40 minutes round trip at this time of year to get hold of the best ones worth every minute if you don t bake we had a dessert party maryland is also a visual treat in autumn the abundant trees turn a huge variety of colours often amazingly intense can t work out whether it s the different climate or different species autumn leaves centennial park columbia more autumn leaves centennial park had to grab any available materials and quickly sketch the view from pam s balcony wooded valley behind pam s apartment a day in washington dc s phillips collection is easy by metro the gaugin to picasso show brought two rich collections from switzerland mostly post impressionist masterpieces taken there just before ww2 and rarely seen outside that country outstanding portraits so glad they were saved from the nazis van gogh s head of a woman picasso s woman at theatre the permanent collection at phillips is also a knockout think maybe 2x the courtauld really not to miss when in the dc area http www phillipscollection org pam with renoir s diners soutine s children hurrying 1940 a very good time indeed to visit the maryland dc area must try harder to get some decent pumpkin pie this side of the water can t make it myself without canned pumpkin leave a comment july 12 2015 church going filed under uncategorized tags philip larkin valeria bateson valeriabateson 8 55 pm this has been the summer of two churches st mary s in walthamstow and st john s in leytonstone the local community choir rehearses in st mary s and highlight of our year was the choir s 5 th anniversary celebration there on july 4 th we d raised money to add an orchestral ensemble and a couple of soloists to our voices and performed vivaldi s gloria what a thrilling sound in that acoustic wf community choir concert flyer we ve also been putting ourselves about in the local area most recently at vestry house garden party in a lovely twilight we heard music of many kinds jazz classical folk and stage show music performed by a variety of local musicians poets recited the choir sang a selection from its mixed repertoire singing in vestry house gardens waltham forest community choir st john s is hosting the waltham forest arts club exhibition part of leytonstone arts trail a large and graceful church in the heart of the area it needed some art of sufficient scale and plenty of it to enhance its lovely well lit interior this challenge was met pretty well by club members and a few guests from a stunning show our local art catcher had curated in st augustine s tower hackney stained glass knight by yvonne overton tree of life by sisetta zappone all this has meant a remarkable amount of churchgoing like philip larkin i love looking into parish churches when nothing s going on but i never before went there to perform or display art obviously churches are great places to make music but they usually overwhelm any attempt to show visual art work by natalie gray and martina simonic bernie clarkson s portrait with small works by valeria bateson sue higgins and mo morris since churches are there right at the centre of things and belong to us all in an important historical sense it s well worth the effort to find appropriate ways for everyone to use them use them or gradually lose them the vicar of st john s is to be congratulated for making this happen in st johns artists worked to draw people in from the street organising 2 workshops on each of the 2 saturdays of the arts trail printing workshop organised by katja rosenberg stone rubbing workshop organised by valeria bateson stone rubbing with watercolour wash we can t help but select carefully what we choose for music and art in a church musicians have done better than visual artists to broaden what is acceptable perhaps because they often pay for the privilege of performing there as visual artists exhibiting in churches why not try to be more inclusive to reflect the whole of life and the human imagination as in medieval misericords pod by martin adams stained glass punk by danielle michalitsianos and princess puppet by alice stanley we hesitate knowing artists don t have the best reputation with everyone can the church s shrinking congregations be brought gently along the path to sharing these impressive and vulnerable buildings with everyone even us till then like larkin we plod awkwardly aprons by veronica lindsay addy red kites by valeria bateson a serious house on serious earth it is in whose blent air all our compulsions meet are recognized and robed as destinies and that much never can be obsolete since someone will forever be surprising a hunger in himself to be more serious and gravitating with it to this ground which he once heard was proper to grow wise in if only that so many dead lie round from philip larkin s church going leave a comment august 20 2014 scary mountains filed under uncategorized tags alberta art athabasca glacier canadian rockies valeriabateson 3 54 pm even a short time spent among the canadian rockies has a lasting impact i wanted to remember the harshness of the landscape so making big crude marks with pastels on rough paper seemed a good place to start toe of the athabasca glacier the wall of mountain is extremely formidable but being destroyed as we watch by ice we see the powdered rock being swept away in streams and rivers mystery mountain on edge of columbia icefield in the front ranges the rock layers stand almost vertical and are being torn slab by slab from the mountains as the weaker layers erode sawback range near banff tilted miniature landscapes form on the slabs as trees struggle to get established again and again huge cascades of rubble accumulate flaking mountain near jasper you long to be young and fit enough to risk your life climbing here to see it up close leave a comment july 29 2014 land of ice and fire filed under uncategorized valeriabateson 7 43 pm blue green lake and white top mountain picture on a mural perhaps so tiresomely pretty moraine lake alberta canada the real thing up close is quite a different experience certainly in the canadian rockies there is a painful glare off the snow and ice and you are slightly off balance with the altitude drink lots of water they say you ll be dehydrated it s over 30 degrees in town and under 10 on high ground walking the athabasca glacier there are the warnings about grizzly bears make lots of noise they say ok maybe stick to the coach in these areas don t want to be a bear dinner roads in the wide glacial valleys are straight and spacious with mile high vertical walls of rock either side heading toward them is a tremendous project even through the passes so few and far between a person needs a guide and to be ultra fit well equipped to walk it people die here a coach has to reverse up the switchbacks mountain wall along icefield parkway meet a forest fire quite common and you might have to detour via edmonton and calgary adding half a day to your journey forest fire by icefield parkway you wonder about the incredible forces that pushed a shallow sea floor a mile up in the air and those that carved it up into peaks and such deep valleys mount victoria from gondola forces that upended it in some places to make vertical layers along whole ridges each with a tendency to break into triangles in the sky when frozen and thawed over millennia part of sawback range science explodes the mystique of the lakes their intense blue green appearance arises from ground up rock powder carried there from the glaciers called rock flour it is really white noticeable in the rivers from above lakes look quite opaque like green and white oil paints mixed together peyto lake near lake louise the grizzly bears fattening on buffalo berries for the all too soon arrival of winter seem quite content and don t even look up at the gondolas passing nearby but they have to be given overpasses on the trans canada highway to prevent their division into smaller pockets causing each to drop below sustainable numbers elk are regularly killed licking salt on the highways grizzlies near gondola clearing canada s mountains have not been logged or mined much but the pressure from people is constant and increasing its wildlife have to be monitored and managed by a very few quite dedicated people the area remains a wild raw landscape mostly inaccessible except for a few months of the year it will inspire me to make art not i
