my iso to 1600 and hand held the camera using joe mcnally s da grip technique as i was waiting for the sun to light up the clouds i took the photo above giving one an idea of why it is called long lake sun below the horizon lights up the clouds over silhouetted adirondack mountains from the floating dock at long view lodge in long lake new york on friday september 30 2022 nikon d750 16 35vr 1 60s f 11 ev 0 iso 1600 16mm focal length hurricane ian was making its way up the us east coast at this time but a strong high pressure system was keeping upstate new york protected from the hurricane s effects it meant the sky west of where i was standing would be clear and once the sun got close to the horizon it would light up the high clouds my patience paid off about five minutes after the sun went behind the mountains on the other side of long lake the next day we went for a hike to buttermilk falls which was a short drive from the long view lodge according to the locals we overheard the night before at the lodge s restaurant we were about three to five days early for peak tree colors that did not stop me from finding color maple leaves near buttermilk falls on raquette river in the adirondacks near long lake new york on saturday october 1 2022 nikon d750 24 120vr 1 125s f 8 ev 0 iso 1600 75mm focal length while there are many buttermilk falls in new york and around the world this one was more of a steep rapids then a waterfall with that in mind i decided to photograph it with a fast shutter speed to show the power of the water s flow i also used a set of five images from 2ev to 2ev to create a hdr image the middle image was used for the motion which was shot at 1 30th of a second buttermilk falls on raquette river in the adirondacks near long lake new york on saturday october 1 2022 nikon d750 16 35vr f 16 ev 0 iso 100 16mm focal length tripod hdr image on the way back from buttermilk falls i spotted what i called a glade next to long lake some might call it a meadow either way it was too early to photograph the scene and we returned for golden hour for a good landscape photograph it needs a good foreground interest which i found in a log laying in the middle of the glade the sunburst through the trees was a bonus sun shines over a glade and nearby mountains on long lake in the adirondacks near long view lodge in long lake new york on saturday 2022 by scott thomas photography after nikon discontinued the nikon d500 camera earlier this year i decided not to wait for nikon to come out with the d500 mirrorless equivalent instead i ordered nikon s flagship mirrorless camera the z9 at the time i figured i would not receive it for months much to my surprise it showed up about a month later in early october cazenovia lakers taven reilley 1 knocks the ball way from the general brown lions receiver kyler kovalik derrigo 2 in a section iii class c semifinal football game action at the micheal bragman stadium in cicero new york on saturday november 5 2022 general brown won 30 22 nikon z9 80 400vr 1 4000s f 4 8 iso 560 ev 0 116mm focal length the nikon z9 has a z lens mount which is not compatible with nikon s fx or dx lenses which i own nikon knowing this developed an adaptor for their lenses which i am happy to report works perfectly i did not notice any difference using the nikon 80 400vr lens i used this past weekend then when i used it on a d500 a set of nikon z9 football photos taken using a nikon af s 80 400mm f 3 5 5 6g vrii lens being mirrorless the nikon z9 does not have a physical shutter less moving parts is a good thing as i have had to repair a couple of my cameras in the past for shutter issues the z9 is also my first pro body camera no need for an extra battery grip it is all built into the z9 s body the autofocus af technology is far and away more advanced than any camera i have used i have been reading and watching many a youtube video in preparation for my first outing with it cazenovia lakers jack lucky in the unusually warm and dry conditions so i did not have to worry about weather it was a day game so i did not have to shoot crazy high isos either general brown lions gabe malcolm 42 scores a nikon z9 80 400vr 1 4000s f 5 6 iso 2800 ev 0 360mm focal length i learned a few things the nikon z9 can shoot raw images at 20 frames per second fps which is twice as fast as the d500 i am used to the raw images are much bigger as the z9 has a 45 mpix sensor size before i knew it i had shot nearly a 1 000 photos in the first half and over 50 of the 64gb card i had in the raw memory card slot going to need a bigger card to mimic the famous line from jaws without a shutter the z9 does have a sound for every shutter click but it was not very loud so i will need to increase it for the next lakes adirondack mountains and the finger lakes i can easily visit the finger lakes were created when the glaciers retreated over 10 000 years ago the geology surrounding each of the lakes are made up of shale and limestone which creeks and streams flowing into the lakes eroded over time to create canyons and impressive waterfalls of varying shapes sizes and drops this past weekend i visited three to photograph them with the fall colors autumn colors at carpenter falls in the carpenter falls unique area near niles new york on sunday october 16 2022 nikon d750 24 120vr 1 4s f 16 iso 100 46mm focal length tripod circular polarizer filter as you can see carpenter falls looks very different then when i was there just one month ago unfortunately the two days before my arrival had rain and very brisk winds which stripped a lot of the colorful leafs from the surrounding trees while there was some color from the birch trees all the reds and oranges from maples and oaks had mostly fallen length tripod circular polarizer filter cow sheds falls in the fillmore glen state park in moravia had a lot of leafs on the rocks surrounding dry creek which flows over the falls and through the gorge the park protects using a circular polarizing filter on my wide angle zoom lens to cut down glare and reflections i was able to capture the waterfall and the path of the water over and under the rocks and debris found at the base of the falls using a long exposure of 3 seconds autumn at chittenango falls state park near chittenango new york on sunday october 16 2022 nikon d750 24 120vr f 11 iso 100 34mm focal length tripod circular polarizer filter hdr image again i visited chittenango falls state park back in july of this year and wanted to see how it would look after nature splashed colors above and surrounding the cascading waterfall the park is named after with the sun still lighting up the trees and sky above the falls i decided to take a set of photos from 2ev to 2ev in 1 stop intervals which i merged into skylum s aurora hdr 2019 software to create a high dynamic range hdr image which i finished processing in adobe lightroom classic as you can see i was able to visit
