damn him for colorization my initial reaction to adam s post was semi skepticism noting that the colorizarion process was aimed for movies that were already well known see casablanca in color not see days and nights in the forest in color these films were the least in need of preservation i added the caveat that of there is an argument that turner boosted the technology of or general profile for film preservation that would be different of course but apparently that was the case according to the anecdote turner had expressed that there was no way to get the money just for restoration so he came up with colorization as the tail that would wag the dog out restoring the entire library supporting that theory was turner s founding of turner classic movies which quickly became and remains to the day the best channel on television for america s and later the world s cinematic history always as intended by the artists with no cuts no commercial correct formats and never colorized one preservationist friend said a juke and fake might not be turner s explicit intent rather it might have been possible that turner really did intend colorization for its own sake but that the early preservationists to whom he went or some subordinate in his circle at mgm saw an opportunity turner s obsession with colonization could be stroked to get ted the goose to lay golden eggs for preservation work maybe post hoc isn t necessarily propter hoc and specific agency is uncertain but the results of the colorization efforts were unquestionably massive if sometimes from backlash there were famous press conferences featuring frank capra jimmy stewart john huston and john huston s oxygen tank railing against ted turner s goddamn crayons stewart said looking at the flesh tones in wonderful life made me sick there were congressional hearings just on film preservation and the status of hollywood s golden age movies maybe the high point of 20th century art the colorization efforts also spurred computer technology everywhere in the field woody allen made the point even then that he wouldn t object to using computer technology to colorize a color film as long as the point is to repair damage and to get the film back to how was made inspired by capra and the other old timers the then current crop a big directors scorsese spielberg coppola and lucas got on the bandwagon and made film preservation per se a cause to which they attach their celebrity clout and money both for their own work and the work of their peers and predecessors and down to today i ve twice in the past few weeks seen days and nights in the forest a 50 plus year old bengali film that had been in terrible shape despite being the work of an acknowledged master satyajit ray but was now getting a nationwide release with an introduction by wes anderson now virtually every first world country has multiple film preservation institutions and national archives many of them state funded if not government institutions outright even the major hollywood studios or their current parent companies are doing work in the field concentrating on their own products of course but still it was their decades of neglect that turner had to start to untangle according to ebert the saddest fact he knew in the field is that mgm had the original 9 hour greed but threw it away now according to a study shown me by one archivist mgm and the three forerunners contained in m g and m are among the best us studios for the survival rate of their silent features and for the studio being the source of may 8 2026 posted by vjmorton uncategorized leave a comment san francisco silent film festival day 2 musical mixup leslie goodwins jimmy aubrey usa 1928 4 s it s not fair to downplay this two reel short on the grounds that aubrey or his gag men or the weiss bros or whoever ripped off laurel and hardy or charlie chaplin etc as the presenter at the tales from the archives section did every silent clown ripped off every other one at the level of basic setups and situations and they all had been ripping off vaudeville or the music hall the whole time what is fair to say is that aubrey does not seem on the basis of this film anyway to be a great comic perforner or have a very distinct character he s ordinary in the worst possible sense for a comedy and not an everyman with some distinct features indeed frankly i was more interested in his buddy played by bud duncan who had been part of the ham and bud team with lloyd hamilton in the 10s there and here duncan plays a pint sized scheming jeff getting the more respectable mutt in trouble there is one very big laugh though and it comes late in the second reel when we find out the fate of the piano in the closet one thing i did notice in spades on this movie which was a common thing for two reel shorts to do is how precisely and cleanly it segments into two very different parts of near equal length the first reel is basically a domestic comedy about a man trying to get away from a shrewish wife for an evening with his buddy at a men s party the second reel comes after the party lets out at dawn and involves their drunken efforts to get home a piano that they won in a raffle there why did film makers especially ones at smaller distributors do this that would allow the film to become the basis of two one reel shorts more shows more money now that was the weiss bros all right the abyss urban gad denmark 1910 9 the abyss is the kind of movie for which fanboyism requires considerable familiarity with the films of the 00s and the early 10s and watching it contextually which is necessary to truly see how much it stands out how accomplished it is i in case one hasn t figured that out am that fanboy it s my all time favorite film to that date in history the abyss is under 40 minutes so it cannot make claim to be history s first feature film but it packs a feature s worth of story in those 40 minutes constantly gripping constantly moving and constantly changing the very first scene takes place on a tram where a man and a woman meet and you re immediately hit by how natural the acting is and how the film is not bound by proscenium staging she leaves and walks into the background a good distance while he stays and contemplates then starts to follow her while the camera stays with the stopped bus 1910 movies just didn t do this the actors emoted to the back row and or into the camera and all the action took place on a single plane with title cards this felt like a mature era silent film from 1924 or 1925 at the earliest the story is simple the downward spiral of a piano teaching spinster who abandons respectability and a good churchgoing man for a scandalous circus performer and despite such conventions as light and daek costumes the acting is shockingly naturalistic all around not just lead actress asta nielsen but also romantic rivals robert dinesen and poul reumert the title cards are short and dramatic and the conflict elemental jealousy and i did not expect the film to end this way though the slut the end closing title card was an unfortunate linguistic coincidence also importantly the score by stephen horne and mas coda was custom made and perfectly cued and timed the drama would ve lost most of its punch i think if it had had generic mood music taking up space something you often see in silent movie prints there is however one sequence for which absolutely no historicization or contextual knowledge is necessary though it helps let s just say that what nielsen does in a dance scene to seduce reumert stands alongside rita hayworth in gilda marilyn monroe in gentlemen prefer blondes or michelle pfeiffer in fabulous baker boys it s not only pure sex appeal in 1910 people but a bit of narrative virtuosity perfectly building through the movements of the dance which may end with bound and grind but start with the lustiest spatial sparring this side of a flamenco in a 1910 movie people i do have to caution though this may have been the worst print i ve ever seen for a featured show at this festival which is absolutely top flight presentation wise i have zero doubt that this was the best print available but certain forms of damage are currently irreversible at least the majority of the film shows some nitrate damage it never makes the film unintelligible or even really gets in the way if you have watched enough silent movies to have built up a tolerance for that very obvious look and ironically as presenter thomas christensen joked because of censorship the dance scene has been preserved the best but in the words of the great philosopher roseanne rosannadanna there s always something if future ai tech can find a way to restore this film to pristine quality bring on hal and skynet the clown a w sandberg denmark 1917 4 some unadvantageous comparison with the abyss with which this was technically presented as a double feature the two films barely reach 100 minutes combined would have been unavoidable under any circumstances but the two films are in the same subgenre circus melodrama involving a romantic triangle and star the two biggest stars of 1910s danish movies asta nielsen and valdemar psilander who even made a couple of films together though these two weren t among them if you didn t know from the dates on the program though you d think the clown was the earlier primitive film while nielsen is naturalistic and exudes sex appeal psilander is trying too hard on both fronts he looks at the camera and emotes with his forehead and cheekbones and clutches his chest far too much for my taste and while attractiveness is subjective movement and body control is not and he feels like an early more earnest version of george lazenby a still photo object not a moving picture actor the story centers on a man joining the circus with his fiancee and becoming famous and unbelievably btw rich but losing her to an aristocrat who ruins her there s some good material the way psilander learns of his wife s adultery was adroit and inventive but her resulting marriage and disillusionment thereof is a title card when it should be a reel i was also scratching my head at some details why would a clown cowboy have real bullets in his gun why would oj simpson go to a fred goldman ted talk analogous point obv and being careful how i say this the way that a suicide attempt is handled and what is shown and not shown feels like such obvious misdirection that i got angry when it turned it not to be it felt like a too innocent mistake like a child not knowing the meaning of a vulgar word he heard sensation im wintergarten their som gennaro righelli germany 1929 4 did europeans set any of their silent movies any place besides a circus and feature anything but love triangles ok just a coincidence of programming but still sensation is a biography of a boy who runs away from his family to join the circus in this case an aristocrat who d gotten shipped off to boarding school because he resents his mother s interest in the man who becomes his stepfather he sees a circus illicitly and is thought to have been drowned but like a lord greystoke who becomes tarzan graf paul mendsorf becomes a trapeze artist who performs over a sword studded floor and leaps through a sword studded ring but sensation im wintergarten mostly just felt blah to me exciting no strong reactions either way it s just a few hours later and i m already struggling to remember details and make sense of what i wrote down in my few notes which is never a good thing i enjoyed the visual joke about his gawking female fans on the boat but wanted more non scenery drama convincing conflict anyway in the circus itself stylistically the film and its trapeze sequences mimic the unmoored camera of dupont s variety and th but mostly reminded me of that better movie threat of death is constant and whatever the film could do to protect its actors at least some of those shots clearly put the camera crew in jeopardy and i have to give the film some props though for how it used chekhov s swords or did it miss lulu bett william c demille usa 1921 2 i enjoyed the first scene the business surrounding the clock and dinner time and basically nothing after that i suppose miss lulu bett might have played better if you bought for one second that the marriage that becomes the first major plot point would be accepted as legitimate by any sentient human much less an actual j p i sure as hell ain t the person to ask it s such a false and obviously false note and i m very far from a canon lawyer that i became suspicious of everything that followed when did the cigar ring become a gold one why does he play along is he even playing he really doesn t know the other woman s fate it might work as the absurd premise of a screwball farce but miss lulu bett is way too sincere for that and piles far too much pointless suffering on its titular heroine the family patriarch is grotesque without being funny the mother in law is a wasted opportunity oh for zara cully or nanette fabray or agnes moorhead and that s just 70s sitcoms and there s nothing either charming or greasy about the brother whom lulu marries to escape this family and boy was there really good timing on that letter at the end and it goes without saying that william c is no cecil b who at least could ve made some lurid fun with this script indeed maybe even something like the abyss it also didn t help tho this is a victor thing that the introducer tried to paint the film as some sort of post 19th amendment caveat about how the patriarchy persists and added an obnoxiously presentist walkoff line which is dumb both in the overall film festival day 1 queen kelly erich von stroheim usa 1929 9 r still wonderful isn t it and no dialogue they didn t need dialogue they had faces yes we have less than a half of stroheim s plan for queen kelly but the reconstructions are relatively minor with one honking great caveat detailed later and they cluster at the end so they don t constantly interrupt the flow the way that the stills in the schmidlin greed do we basically have the first act and the opening scene of the second and some title cards again tk but it all hangs together internally quite well because stroheim shot in sequence before he was fired and the project pretty much ended but had stopped in a not entirely dissatisfactory place the story largely resembles stroheim s own the wedding march aristocratic prince falls head over heels for a commoner whom he sees at random in a crowd and they love briefly but intensely and the fallout destroys them both on their separate...
