printed image using transferred or direct digital printing methods there was a choice in this section of the module between a form of shibori using stitchery and steam to create raised forms in fabric chapter 7 or to make a slip from a printed image using transferred or direct digital printing methods i had for a long time been thinking of trying to use a printer to transfer an image to fabric so of course the second option chapter 8 was my choice i began this chapter by printing some of my designs from my continue reading diploma module 4 chapter 8 part 1 leave a comment diploma module 4 this section i used copper shim and tomato puree tube both of which i was able to sew into using my sewing machine i began by heating my metal shim which is a thin sheet of metal over a low flame on my gas cooker extreme care was taken whilst doing this to avoid burns and i was wearing thick oven gloves the discolouration took place very rapidly and the effect was quite beautiful as can be stitched surfaces from which to cut slips this stitched material is known as the slip surface whereas the material to which the slip is attached is known as the applied surface i began this chapter by looking through my decorated papers from chapter 3 and chose two that i particularly felt would be suitable for this purpose as they would have plenty of detail that would be evident on the cut slips beginning with paper 1 i decided it would be interesting to make my slip surface using continue reading diploma module 4 chapter 5 leave a comment diploma module 4 chapter 4 april 19 2021 april 20 2021 wallywackstitch how can a slip be re invented to illustrate ways in which a slip could be re invented in a contemporary manner i have given some suggestions on the following worksheet however as i began making them my mind went on overdrive and i came up with further ideas as can be seen in the above stitched samples i did try to obtain some waste fabric for a traditional slip as my starting point on the above working sheet but due to lockdown shortages this proved difficult however i did follow the same principal using green twigs collected on turbary common as continue reading diploma decided to take a walk on the common with my sketchbook and camera and see what i could find to use as my inspiration for this chapter unfortunately due to it being a little early in the season i could not find anything that i found interesting enough to cover all the criteria i therefore used a cut flower from a bunch purchased in the supermarket i have always been intrigued with irises since i first saw van gogh s paintings of them so continue reading diploma module 4 chapter 3 leave a comment diploma module 4 chapter 2 traditional stitched samples march 26 2021 march 27 2021 wallywackstitch the exercise for this chapter was to stitch small postage stamp sized samples or sections of an embroidered flower slip shape i printed out an example of elizabethan embroidery then cut out a postage stamp sized window next i stitched replacement slips to fill the gap i left a small border of fabric around the edge of each sample so that i could turn it under when i applied it to another fabric with a chain stitch border sample 1 the sample on the left is tent stitch worked on evenweave and applied to a linen base in the centre continue reading diploma module 4 chapter 2 with the way the embellishing of the two layers of top fabric have given so much texture to the piece it has turned out much as i had hoped and i enjoyed the hand stitching for a change i backed it with more of the same dyed fabric and added a tube at the top through which i have inserted a wooden strip from which it is hung this also gives the hanging structure records for module 3 this module tutor i stretched my design width wise made the sides slightly irregular and also made some fringed ends on some areas suggesting further areas to explore i have added depth to the design by using twigs from turbary common and wrapping them in red embroidery floss and cutting them into small sections to replace the running stitches i was going to use extra depth was also made by padding the
