doesn t paint them as pridefully stagnant it paints them as downright moronic and incompetent oh the asari units can t stand as much sustained fire as a turian or human unit due to their lack of heavy armor and support fire well why don t they use those things then they sure have the resources for it and let s not forget every single one of those women can launch and explode things with their brains i feel like there are two meta reasons for why they re like this they wanted all the citadel species to be balanced and dependent on each other to some degree even when it doesn t make logistical sense they wanted to keep their dainty space elf vibe by essentially taking the she fu trope where female hand to hand fighters are dainty and acrobatic to both be sexy and to compensate for an alleged lack of raw strength and applying it to their entire military s identity listen i love the asari i love the idea of a mono gendered alien species i love how their longevity shapes their culture and outlook i love their neural powers form of reproduction and how those things shaped them into a very empathetic and diplomatic civilization but i need to see some internal consistency with the worldbuilding there you can t have them be wealthy powerful sprawling and organized like the empire and somehow dependent on asymmetrical warfare like they re the rebel alliance pick a lane arcane treppenwitz monday morning mageing 1 month ago the dragon prince s shallow morality spoilers i recently gave this show a chance after a close friend sung its praises to me from the start i didn t vibe with it due to its brand of humor the incessant bathos and identical awkward and quirky character voices writing wise not va wise but its self contradicting and tepid morality is what bothered me the most on one hand the show acts like it s trying to acknowledge moral complexity and relativism with humans lacking access to primal magic and resorting to dark magic just to survive in a hostile environment on the other it never fully commits to the idea of dark magic s vilification being arbitrary always defaulting to portraying its users as sympathetic but selfish at best world burning megalomaniacs at worse the it consumes animals reason was always flimsy especially with all in universe pearl clutchers still visibly eating meat and wearing leather and the writers perceptibly kept trying to tack on new reasons to discourage dark magic with the only indisputable one near the end of the show aaravos can fully possess you even if you just used it once fully contradicting events from earlier in the story beyond dark magic but still occasionally looping back to it there s the frequency with which the show defaults to simplistic cartoon hero morality despite its vague gesturing towards nuance perfectly logical choices are presented as sinister not because of a consistent moral paradigm but simply because opposing them is what s expected of a kids show on the most superficial level possible here s a few examples king harrow shares his kingdom s already strained resources with an allied nation which effectively dooms countless of his own subjects to starvation but somehow sacrificing one magical creature of dubious sapience is more morally reprehensible pyrrah the red dragon spends days flying over a human city as a clear threat and display of force and then proceeds to burn most of it down at the first sign of resistance but somehow she deserves to be saved from the consequences by the heroes queen aanya refusing to retaliate against xadia after they literally assassinated the human king that saved her nation is somehow noble wise and laudable even though she and rest of the gaggle of capitulators in the room had no idea that callum and ezran were on a quest to solve things peacefully queen janai refusing to execute her brother is moral and good even though he s already caused incalculable damage and stated in no uncertain terms that he would take any and every opportunity to do it again ezran simply arming his nation to better defend itself from invaders and prevent the repeat of a recent tragedy is an ominous indicator that he s on a dark path knowingly or not the show keeps hammering the message that any form of retaliation is wrong even when your aggressors were 100 in the wrong and you ll invariably become as horrible as them if you strike back this is ultimately epitomized by aaravos when his motives are revealed making him embody the idea that seeking justice for even the most undeniable of cruelties will inevitably corrupt you beyond recognition most infuriatingly the show never presents a convincingly preferable moral alternative it doesn t expect follow up questions from the viewer if curing my son s deadly illness with dark magic is evil then what s the alternative letting him die if responding to a foreign nation s aggression is evil what s the alternative opening the fucking gates for them if seeking justice for my daughter s murder is evil what s the alternative letting the cosmic gods do it again to others forever other than pulling from the communal grab bag of infantile moral platitudes the show gives us nothing it s cowardly it s tepid and it unwittingly imparts a terrible message to the younger viewers potentially guilting them out of standing up to bullies or seeking help against abusive caretakers despite its many wins for diversity and representation which i will give this show its flowers for i still detest it on the whole beneath the optics of high octane heroism and idealism lies a cowardly message of passivity capitulation and conformity what a waste 1 month ago i m soooo tired of this trend of gen zs and gen alphas treating millennials like they re ancient but i m even more tired of fellow millennials who internalize that shit and center most of their humor around it you know the script dreading every year they inch
