watching the wake reflections that bubble up skip to content watching the wake reflections that bubble up menu and widgets home about contact twitter facebook google plus github wordpress com search for taking time when there is no time to waste disclosure before i could write this post i needed to figure out how to use an example from jewish religious practices without appropriating it in a disrespectful or harmful way i am hoping that understanding that i am learning from this culture rather than placing the practice of shiva in my own context is adequate appreciation vs appropriation i apologize if i have fallen short on tuesday of this week i learned about the tragic shooting death of an amazing black woman leader in the united methodist church then i learned that one of my friends had been on the phone with her when the shooting happened my heart was deeply saddened before i heard this news i had already decided that tuesday would be a just do what i want to do day i had been struggling with feeling like i should be doing stuff around the house but then not doing any of it and feeling guilty about it this was not helpful for either getting stuff done or enjoying my break so i had decided that instead of feeling guilty about all the things that needed doing but that i didn t want to do and therefore i hadn t done i would give myself permission for one day to do only what i wanted without the guilt i figured it would either be rejuvenating enough for me to return to some level of productivity or it would show me that i needed to define my priorities and my motivations for all those need to be done tasks i am extremely fortunate and privileged to be at a point in my life when i can afford to drop out for a day all this is to say i was already perfectly poised to just sit with my grief on behalf of my friend on behalf of autura eason williams family and friends on behalf of the loss of so much life changing world changing leadership in the church on behalf of our world where a 15 year old can shoot someone in their own driveway just for a f ing car i had the time i had to convince my noom mood coach that i didn t want to nor did i need to use any of my tools to get through this i just needed and wanted to be allowed to sit with all the grief and anger it and i didn t need to be fixed in that moment i was reminded of the jewish practice of shiva literally sitting with one s grief i felt like i we should be learning from this jewish wisdom then i began to think of all of the losses we have experienced in the last few weeks months and years lives lost to senseless gun violence lives lost to war lives lost when pride overrode science rights to manage our own reproductive health and bodies lost with a virtual swoop of a pen trust lost in our institutions truth lost through laws denying teachers the ability to teach the history of slavery unity and kindness lost to power grabbing divisiveness as i considered how much we have to grieve i also thought about how little time we have or make to just be with our grief when our losses are justice issues our or at least my most common reaction is to jump deeper into activism than we have in the past we want to do something which is indeed a good and noble desire after the dobbs vs jackson decision removing reproductive rights from women we were in shock many of us were in an abyss of despair and disillusionment the only way we could find to climb out of that pit was to feel like we were doing something and we did some things we are doing some things we may not have seen much fruit yet but we are making our voices heard and praying that it isn t too little too late but i wonder if we also need to take time to see the grief behind our anger take time to lament that s an old fashioned word that can be a noun and a verb something that is and something we do many of the psalms and the book of lamentations are laments they are an expression of the process of lamenting they express grief most often about conditions in the world rather than personal loss jesus laments over jerusalem in matthew 23 and luke 13 most people don t have the luxury of time that i have in this moment so how can we take time to lament when there is no time especially with the sense of urgency around legislation policy and rapidly approaching elections perhaps it is less about the amount of time a whole day or seven days and more about seeing feeling and acknowledging our grief perhaps the time we can take is a few minutes to dump our feelings cuss words and all onto paper or into a computer or maybe we can create art or music that speaks our grief it could be taking 5 minutes to find that really sad song on your music service and letting yourself have a good cry i m inviting you to stop even if it s only for a few minutes to be in your grief i can t help but believe that our actions protests letter writing and donations will be more powerful if they come not just from a place of anger but also from our acknowledged grief posted on july 21 2022 2 comments on taking time when there is no time to waste keeping faith or not in hard times i read a question recently regarding living up to god s plan for one s life and what if we don t the questioner referred to jeremiah 29 11 for surely i know the plans i have for you says the lord plans for your welfare and not for harm to give you a future with hope so how many times have you or i used this verse to speak of hope and faith in god for our own individual situations when we do this we are ignoring the context we often choose to jump over the first 10 verses of chapter 29 the first thing i notice is that this passage is not addressed to one individual person it s a note of hope for an entire nation in exile in texan it would be y all not you more importantly this is not a perfectly outlined plan for the immediate future verse 10 specifically mentions 70 years but 70 is a number of wholeness in scripture when your time here is complete i will bring you out of this hard place this is a promise across the longer arc of history not for next month skip moen no known relationship talks about god knowing god s creation the bible uses this word to proclaim god s complete knowledge of creation he goes on to discuss how the word we translate as plans refers to the new things god is doing reading this reminded me of isaiah 43 19 and really isaiah 40 44 one more point is the instructions given to the exiled nation in verses 1 9 these instructions are not about sit yourself down and wait until i get around to rescuing you these verses tell the exiles and us to get busy doing the things that need to be done continue to live faithfully and keep hope that god is in this dang that s asking a lot live faithfully in this hard socio political climate when it s easy to wonder where god is what does that even look like for christians in 2022 my understanding of what it means to follow jesus the christ is to do what i can to bring justice where there is injustice do what needs doing okay on it and trust that god is doing new things will do new things in the fullness of time that s the part i m really struggling with right now and with jeremiah 29 11 in general i can make my small attempts to live faithfully to do what needs doing but can i keep faith and hope can i believe that god is in this and will do a new thing in the fullness of time it s hard it s really hard posted on july 18 2022 july 18 2022 leave a comment on keeping faith or not in hard times re awakening hello readers i doubt there are any of you left with notifications set for this blog but hopefully we can build a bit of a following i first developed and titled this blog watching the wake because i find so much solace in all forms of water and especially in watching the wake of a ship solace and peace those were my goals now i find myself and our world in a completely different kind of wake the most recent wake creating event was the overturning of roe v wade however i coming to understand that this event is one in a long line of boats and votes that should have been and still need to be stopped for more information please go listen to this podcast we can do hard things this podcast thoughtfully and rationally explains how wide the issue of reproductive justice is my eyes have been opened to all the times i have missed the boat when i chose to not pay attention in my quest for solace and peace i have been re awakened and so i will be reawakening this blog i m not committing to writing every week but i am committing to educating myself and sharing what i learn posted on july 1 2022 leave a comment on re awakening blog at wordpress com subscribe subscribed watching the wake sign me up
