jul 14 by weegingerdug it s the greatest attempted westminster assault on scottish culture since the jacobite wars reform uk has proposed an amendment to the uk government s elections bill which would criminalise the use of any languages other than english or welsh on electoral material and impose a punishment of up to six months in prison and or a fine reform uk s amendment to clause 107 to the representation of the people bill which was tabled by the party s deputy leader richard tice and co signed by every sitting reform mp would impose a legal obligation for all election publications material to be in the english language or the welsh language only this would include campaign material from candidates leaflets posters advertisements and online content as well as signage in ballot stations in the unlikely event this amendment were to pass publishing election materials in scottish gaelic scots irish or cornish would become a criminal offence along with campaign materials in minority ethnic languages or british sign language bsl the snp and scottish greens regularly publish campaign materials in scottish gaelic while in northern ireland sinn féin publishes campaign material in irish and in cornwall the cornish nationalist party mebyon kernow publishes election material in cornish scots language words and phrases often appear on election leaflets in scotland all this would become illegal under the english language monoculture which reform seeks to impose on the entire uk outwith wales candidates parties and election agents could all face imprisonment or fines for using any language other than english or welsh not only is this intensely disrespectful to speakers of gaelic scots cornish or irish it also threatens to exclude members of the deaf community from the political process indeed the very names sinn féin ourselves in irish and mebyon kernow sons of cornwall in cornish are not in english and as such could become criminalised under reform s asinine linguistic vindictiveness in the north of ireland reform s latest ill thought through attempt at anti migrant populism runs a cóiste agus capaill coach and horses through the good friday agreement it is probable that reform included welsh in its attempt to impose linguistic purism because the status of welsh is protected by the westminster passed welsh language acts of 1967 and 1993 the 1967 act guaranteed the use of welsh in court proceedings and granted it equal status with english but not official status while the 1993 act introduced the principle of equality of welsh and english in public services and justice in wales the welsh senedd passed its own official languages act deddf ieithoedd swyddogol in 2012 which introduced a statutory obligation on public bodies in wales to provide bilingual services it s also likely that it was motivated by the party s wish to become the largest party in the senedd and to form the welsh government they cannot hope to succeed in this by alienating the 40 of the wales born population which speaks welsh in scotland northern ireland and cornwall there is no westminster legislation which provides any measure of recognition for scottish gaelic scots or cornish scots and gaelic were recognised as official languages of scotland by holyrood s scottish languages act of 2025 an act which also recognised bsl however this would not affect the criminalisation of these languages in westminster elections the regulation of which is a reserved matter all the celtic languages of the uk as well as scots have been granted recognition by the uk government which has listed them as minority or regional languages of the uk under the european charter for regional and minority languages this is a european treaty adopted in 1992 under the auspices of the council of europe for the protection and promotion of languages used by traditional minorities in signatory states in january this year the uk government upgraded cornish to recognise it under part iii of the charter the same recognition granted to the other celtic languages of the uk this obliges the uk government to fulfil a number of concrete measures designed to promote and facilitate the use of these languages in public life the media and education scots is also recognised by the uk government as a language but only receives the lower part ii protection doubtless for political reasons as granting part iii status to scots would oblige the uk government which retains tight control of broadcasting to establish a scots language tv channel or radio service for the 1 5 million scots speakers of course the real target of reform uk is the use of minority ethnic languages in campaign literature there was much huffing puffing and pearl clutching from reform about the use of the asian languages urdu and bengali in its campaign literature during the gorton and denton by election which reform had expected to win but which in the end lost badly to the greens for some reason we are expected to believe it s unfair of a party to reach out to british citizens lawfully registered on the electoral register who for one reason or another prefer to use a language other than english or welsh the conservatives have introduced their own amendment to the bill which seeks to criminalise the use of foreign languages in election materials this raises a number of issues of its own not the least of which is how to define foreign language is the native and preferred language of a british citizen born raised and educated in the uk to be deemed foreign but the real issue here is why should reform or the tories care if a party s candidate chooses to publish electoral material in a language other than english or welsh no one s interests are damaged by it this is simply another front in the right wing culture wars a racist dog whistle and the manufacture of nonsensical non issues in order to stir up hatred against minorities and distract attention from the real cause of the decline in public services the cost of living crisis and the enshittification of privately run services the greed of the rich reform s scattergun approach to tackling this entirely spurious non issue catches scottish gaelic scots irish and cornish in their race baiting cross fire this is typical behaviour from a party of ignorant and boorish chaos agents it most probably simply did not enter their anglo centric heads that there are languages in the uk other than english or welsh if they were dimly aware of the existence of these languages they would not have cared about them anyway this is a foretaste of the kind of petty minded nastiness which would be in store under a future reform or conservative government the callousness with which it would treat minority communities and its contempt and disdain for scotland it also tells us that reform uk is not a serious party of government as it proposes its far right populist policies with no thought to their real world consequences this is the politics of the idiocracy not of serious grown ups chaos childish petulance and performative cruelty are the hallmarks of westminster rule scotland needs out remember when we were told that
