get lunch during a layover i went to popeyes for their chicken sandwich filling delicious the perfect airport food all in all a sensible choice for the situation because this was at an airport you submitted your orders through a kiosk i noticed in rueful confusion when waiting in line that the sandwich didn t appear to be on the menu alas poor batrachised no one has suffered as i have suffered having little emergy to deal with this after a 4 30 am wake up i decided to just get what looked to be some chicken tenders instead maybe with a side of coleslaw whatever in the end i simply let the spirit move me when it comes to fried chicken as i ordered i heard a soft elegant southern voice asking for help i looked to the side there was a sweet older lady who is having trouble figuring out the kiosk i helped her patting myself on the back your good dead for the day batrachised i told myself fondly look at you wielding this kiosk with expertise i laughed with the little old lady about how confusing these things can be and told her cheerfully i ve been there before turning back to my own order and submitting it the airport prices made me go popeyed and nearly had me popeyeing out of there the total was around 30 but i decided i was unlikely to find something cheaper and ordered i later learn my friend paid nearly 26 for his meal in a moment of vindication so you know how fast food meals come in those paper bags with the chain s brand on them i watch those bags fly into customers hands as order after order is fulfilled and then my order is called and i watch in horror seeing no paper bag but instead a giant box that gets stuffed into a giant plastic bag somehow in the midst of my kiosk smugness i had accidentally ordered a family tray and so gotten my single self what felt like about 5 lbs of fried chicken there was nothing for it i moved forward and accepted this responsibility heavy as it was heavy in more than one sense the bag weighed my hand down i frantically walked away wondering in a half panic what to do literally nobody noticed or cared but i felt as if all eyes were on this lone woman carrying a giant box of 5 lbs of fried chicken through an airport alone like it was a mark of cain this this was my burden pride goeth before a fall and my kiosk smugness had shriveled into dust well i have to eat i told myself i can t eat all of this before my next flight i refuse to take it on the plane and besides i won t have access to a fridge for hours i can t give it away who d accept random food from someone at an airport i ll just eat one of the many chicken breasts i found a fairly empty gate and sat in a cluster of somewhat empty seats i opened the box it literally came with a serving boat the smell of 5 lbs of fried chicken filled the air the lady a few seats down from me got up and moved having no fork in a burst of panic i furtively ate a couple with my hands and then stuffed the rest in a trash can like i was discarding illicit goods i had put one in the little serving plate and went to go find a fork and sit somewhere else in some sort of subconscious attempt to find a new identity this gate knew me as 5 lb fried chicken woman who pawed at her meals i found another quiet corner and sat to eat my still hefty portion of fried chicken another lady a few seats away got up and moved in a moment of triumph like dealing a mortal blow to an enemy i finished and threw the wrappers away i had done it i had defeated the 5 lbs of fried chicken it was a nasty affair involving food waste and humiliation and i shall never be the same if you have thoughts on what i should have done instead i do not want to hear them if you wonder why this flustered me so much i have no explanation all i know is that heavy are the know whether her mind was being improved or not but she felt vaguely that if she had come across john foster s books years ago life might have been a different thing for her they seemed to her to yield glimpses of a world into which she might once have entered though the door was forever barred to her now i wonder what valancy might have thought would have changed for her if she read foster earlier and if her age is why she thinks it s too late to make changes as her circumstances seem to be unchanged but at the same time by deciding to rebel against the clan and go to dr trent foster seems to have already made a change in her bravery and rebellion than before no where new hero 15h i wonder if she means that she could have been more alive to the beauty and freedom possible in the
