newsletter you are here about us in memoriam bob doedens professor emeritus robert bob doedens was a foundational member of the department of chemistry and a dedicated advocate for undergraduate education he passed away in july 2025 at the age of 87 he joined uc irvine in 1968 just three years after receiving his ph d in chemistry from the university of wisconsin madison where he was a national science foundation predoctoral fellow he received his bachelor s degree in chemistry from the university of wisconsin milwaukee in 1961 an accomplished inorganic chemist bob was known for his work synthesizing compounds with unusual physical and chemical properties his research contributed meaningfully to the field and his commitment to teaching and mentorship left a lasting legacy at uc irvine as associate dean of undergraduate education he championed initiatives to improve the undergraduate experience at uc irvine he was especially known for his thoughtful and compassionate mentorship often providing guidance and support to students who needed it most professor doedens was a thoughtful gentle soul and will be remembered for his scientific contributions and for his deep care for students and colleagues alike his legacy lives on through the robert doedens undergraduate achievement award awarded to one outstanding transfer undergraduate student each year jorg meyer december 31 1940 may 1 2021 we are heartbroken at the unexpected passing of jorg meyer uci s glassblower jorg was not only a master craftsman the very top of his craft but a friend to many of us in the department jorg was born during the bombing of berlin in 1940 he was a third generation glassblower and even by the age of 17 was very accomplished in this art not fully realizing what he was signing up for he and a group of friends joined the french foreign legion at 17 an association that was short lived when they jumped ship in the suez canal picked up by the british he ended up on a ship bound for australia where he served eventually not only as a glassblower but also as a rock crusher for the geophysics department at the australian national university he arrived in california in 1965 where he was interviewed and hired on the spot by the founding chemistry department chair professor sherry rowland at the newly opened uci campus early on he met allison in the one campus gathering spot that existed in these early years the commons allison was in the inaugural class at uci and became his wife life partner and soul mate for 50 years professor rowland hired jorg realizing then that so much of cutting edge research depended on the availability of unique instrumentation and equipment much of which requires glassblowing however jorg did not just make the equipment he was deeply involved in the design and usually had better ideas as to how to make it work than we did in this video he talks about always looking for new challenges the last thing you wanted to ask jorg to do and the last thing he wanted to be asked to do was something trivial or routine jorg loved the ocean fishing free diving and fast boats when he could not get parts for his boats he learned how to make his own and became a very accomplished machinist as well in the early 90s there was increasing realization of the fire danger of solvent stills and jorg took an initial crude design from dow chemical and over 30 years progressively advanced and refined the design of stainless steel solvent purification systems improving their safety and footprint he used his machining skills to construct many of these systems which he and allison installed in numerous labs around the world there is no question that many injuries and even deaths have been avoided by the use of these systems the department has become internationally recognized since 1965 and for many faculty jorg was essential for their research that brought accolades to themselves and the department his contributions were recognized in 2014 by the prestigious uci lauds and laurels staff achievement award for many years we would ask what would we do without jorg sadly that day has come but the tremendous appreciation for his support of the department research programs will continue on for a very long time as a person jorg was truly larger than life he was runner up in the australian national championships for spear fishing and was the first person to ride a whale shark which was captured by video and appeared in 1969 in national geographic hal moore hal moore was hired in 1965 by professor f sherwood rowland as an assistant professor professor moore was the department s first synthetic organic researcher he became an inspiring mentor and friend to subsequent generations of organic chemistry faculty recruited to uci he helped establish the style and tone of the chemistry department and that spirit of working together for the common good has been a critical factor in its growth and notable success max wolfsberg max wolfsberg was chair of the chemistry department at uc irvine from 1973 to 1980 his popularity as a teacher at both the undergraduate and graduate level was legendary and that attracted a wide range of both undergraduates and graduate students to do research with him a large number of which have continued his interests in fundamental chemical research in the u s and europe james n pitts jr james n pitts jr was a researcher at uci from 1994 to 2014 following a distinguished career on the faculty at uc riverside jim was a pioneer in discovering how air pollution is driven by photochemical processes and a fierce advocate for policies to reduce air pollution mare taagepera mare taagepera was lecturer in chemistry and chemical education researcher at uci from 1975 to 2013 mare was a passionate and popular instructor of organic chemistry courses at uci and she worked tirelessly to transform science education in general and especially k 12 education in orange county f sherwood rowland f sherwood rowland was the founding chair of chemistry and remained on the faculty at uci until his death in 2012 sherry a world renowned atmospheric chemist received the nobel prize in chemistry in 1995 for discovering that chlorofluorocarbons destroy stratospheric ozone with potentially devastating consequences you can read sherry s memoir written by b j
